  1. If you have ever been to any of the long standing buffets in Harlem, then you will be pleasantly surprised to find that Royal soul food is just as, if not more, solid. Food choices abound beyond what one sees posted on their placards.

During my last excursion I enjoyed oxtail, fried snapper, cucumber salad and a bit of their fried chicken. I usually stay away from fish at buffets as they tend to be overly dry or past their prime. To my surprise, the fish was moist and fresh. The cucumber salad was refreshing and crisp, not soggy or overtly pickled. Fried chicken was great as well. Though the oxtail was delicious, I enjoy it best when it is fall off the bone tender. Their offerings required me to actually bite and seek out the meat. Fine (the work was worth the effort).

Make sure to check out how the person bagging your selections is doing. The gentleman who was bagging mine cracked the styrofoam container and had I not asked him to use another container to capture the potential drip I would have been telling another story.

They are fairly new so I would love to see how the food fares once the newness of the place dissipates.  However, considering that there are not many competitors for what Royal soul food offers I can see them flourishing with little effort.

There is an open seating area and a bathroom both of which I have yet to utilize. The place is spotlessly clean so I will return for sure.

  2. Royal Soul Food has a smaller selection some of the popular buffets further north, but this isn't a bad thing, as it helps you focus on the basics. I tried fried chicken, jerk chicken, macaroni and cheese, collard greens and banana pudding. And I also tried the cucumber salad based on Mardory V.'s review, which probably wouldn't have happened otherwise, but it was a nice counterpoint to the high-calorie delights.

The price was a startling $5.49 per pound. Everything was solid. They also have fish and roast beef.
