The Rail Line Diner

“Best of all, it is one of the few diner-type restaurants I spotted in Chelsea.”

“The service is extraordinary – attentive servers who aren't overbearing, coffee mug is always full, and every request is met with a smile.”

“Came here without knowing much except it use to be called "moonstruck" friendly service, good quality of food and nice attentive service and more importantly fair price!”

  1. Stopped by for breakfast recently.  The diner itself is very clean and has several tv's around the counter.  Service was top notch.  Coffee was being served almost before I sat down.  Can't beat that.  The coffee was good and I really liked the orange mug and dish they are served in.  A little color in your dishware never hurt anyone. The challah french toast was fresh and excellent.  I'm a big fan of giving me the little non-packaged syruo to pour over my breakfast.  The egss were cooked perfectly and even my english muffin was extra good.  I would comeback often if possible.

  2. I've written an extensive review of this diner (with updates) under its previous name (the Moonstruck Diner)….

(Update on 7/27/14):  Yesterday we had yet another (early) dinner there before seeing a play in the neighborhood.  As always, the food was delicious & the service was terrific – and the latter included a really sweet busboy, plus the same nice (French-speaking) hostess/cashier from the last time was there and the same friendly manager was there.  Also, we got a booth by the window again.

I ordered the Pasta Colizanas and I chose the fettucine ($14.95, and it came with a cup of soup [I chose their always-tasty cream of mushroom], a small salad [I chose the Greek, which was quite a generous size] and warm bread & some crackers).  I could definitely have gotten another meal out of the pasta, but we were going to be out for several more hours and therefore I couldn't take it with me.  I literally couldn't manage to finish about half of my entrée, which was really a shame because it was delicious.  Meanwhile; my husband ordered the Portobello Panini ($13.45), which came with a small serving of really tasty cole slaw and a pickle.  The panini had goat's cheese and it tasted *great*.  Afterwards we both ordered a cup of coffee ($1.90/each) and we got free refills (we didn't even have to ask).  As I'd mentioned previously (when it was still called the Moonstruck Diner), their coffee has improved significantly.

Since the diner wasn't nearly at full capacity, we were able to linger for quite awhile and we really enjoyed the ambiance.  As always, the restrooms were spotless.  Also, we continue to love the very attractive renovations.

  3. I went here today for post work quick dinner. I had amazing service. I had a delicious hot cocoa and fresh toast with fresh berries. It's a nice large space in Chelsea. I'll definitely be returning. I love diners ! And good service is always appreciated.

  4. Probably one of the cleanest diners I've been to. It feels more modern than your typical diner, but still has the right atmosphere. The space is really big, I can't imagine it ever being packed.

Having breakfast for dinner, I got a breakfast burrito with guac. Sadly, you can only pick one from each category (meat, cheese, veggie), but it still comes out to be a good size. They even press it so it's nice and toasty when served. My friend got the pancakes deluxe or something like that –  3 fluffy pancakes with a plate of eggs, bacon, sausage.

As the night went on, the waiter refilling water got sloppier and sloppier. At one point it spilled on our food. Other than that, no complaints about service.

When you pay your bill, they offer you free cookies from the cookie jar! Sadly I didn't take one since I was on a low sugar diet, next time though! The mints were a good alternative.

  5. This place is the Ashford & Simpson of diners because it's solid…solid as a rock!

My buddy and fellow Yelper Jason M. and I came here after scoping out a couple of beer spots and we had a very good experience.  Service was fast and friendly.   He had an omelet (for dinner!  WTF?) and I ordered the gyro platter which came with fries and a salad.  It was good, but a lot of food so I took the salad home.   We also had pie…him some type of tiramisu pie/cake and me a chocolate cream.  They were fine, but not exceptional.

One weird thing, the waiter told me repeatedly that the tzatziki sauce that was served in a plastic container was for the gyro and that the bottles of oil and vinegar were for the salad.  He literally told me that three time.  I don't know if I just look like I've never had a salad before, but he was very insistent on telling me that.  But one day, I might just put oil and vinegar on my gyro for the hell of it, to see why he was so adamant about me NOT doing it.

Anyway, the food was good, service was good, place was clean and the soap in the bathroom had a pleasant fragrance, so I give this four stars.
