  1. This small, family owned and operated restaurant is what I would describe as "Colombian fusion". The flavor is distinctly Colombian with small twists. Most places over do "fusion". But at La Masa it is a refreshing change from the usual Colombian fare that can be found in any of a hundred Colombian restaurants within 10 miles all with roughly the same quality and flavor profiles.

For instance, empanadas are not a Colombian staple, but many of their flavors are distinctly Colombian.

The food here was excellent. The hostess was very friendly and attentive. The portions were decent and the prices were reasonable.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our meal and we will return.

  2. My first taste of what The Bronx has to offer and I was thoroughly pleased!

At first look on their Yelp page, it kind of looked like a typical empanadas spot but I walked into a cute space with hip decor and light fixtures.  We were greeted and immediately.

The menu is small and concise which I like. Being that it was my first time there, I was able to pick out my choices in a couple of minutes, though I wish the empanadas section of the menu was organized better but no biggy.

I went with the classic chicken in corn dough, and the spinach & cheese in wheat dough. I also ordered a side of rice & beans ($5) to fill me up a little more.

Our empanadas came out in these cool small metal baskets, and the order of rice & beans was pretty hefty.  Our food also came with 2 squeeze bottles of sauces (Pink Sauce & Green Salsa Mayo) and a container of spicy salsa.

Unfortunately, my chicken empanada was cold in the middle but no biggy.  I informed the waitress and asked if she could heat it up a bit.  She not only went and got me a new one, she gave us some fried plantains on the house. Excellent customer service!

I normally wouldn't go out of my way to the Bronx for some grub, but I'd definitely be back here!

  3. Wow! This place is legit!

The place is tiny and very cramped if you go during a rush…BUT…the food! Food is definitely fresh and made with love. They have a nice variety and the staff was very attentive and professional.

I can see it being a regualr spot for me!

    Thumbs up!

  4. Just an overall fantastic experience. After having the privilege of indulging in their delicious food during the yelp holiday hangover cruise I knew that this would be a place I must visit. Luckily, my bf is a fellow bx resident thus it made it easier for me to actually make the trip to the bx. Quite honestly, the food is just so good that I would travel to the bx regardless if I had a huge empanada craving.

The owner is so nice! She was very accommodating to our needs. Everything is freshly made but please note that items could be sold out when visiting. They are just that in high demand. Even though the empanadas look tiny they are filling and the 3 for $5 carnivoras I highly recommend (can pick and choose between 3 diff meats or 3 of the same flavor for $5). If not each empanada is around $2. The place is so cute and tiny. Most ppl seem to order out but others actually sit in this space. I wouldn't name this location a prime special occasions type of place but more of a relaxed, homey atmosphere.

The owner did mention expanding their business to the city and I sure hope they do! The empanadas are just so rich in flavor and freshly made that anyone could easily become a regular here.

  5. I heard good things about this new restaurant in Morris Park, so I decided to give them a try tonight.

La Masa serves Colombian food with an emphasis on empanadas – kind of an oddball in this historically Italian area of the Bronx, but definitely a welcome addition. Their storefront is super small – simply decorated with ~4 tables and stools lining a back counter. It's really not practical for large groups (or even families) but perfectly fine for one or two people to sit and relax.

I decided to get takeout so I placed my order online (you're able to right on their website). I was really impressed by the menu, there are so many unique types of empanadas it was hard for me to choose which ones I wanted. I ultimately decided to go with a chicken vodka and a chicken and cheese – and since the family was hungry I ordered some wedges, yuca fries, and two aretas: cheese and shredded pork.

The empanadas were definitely the best part of my meal; they were filled (but not too stuffed) with chicken and fried to perfection – super tasty. The aretas were okay, I liked the shredded pork one but the cheese one left something to be desired – partly my fault though, the cheese congealed a little and I think if I had eaten it fresh and not let it cool a little on the way home it would have been better. The wedges were good albeit a little too greasy for my taste. Unfortunately I never got to try the yuca fries – when I opened the bag when I got home they weren't there. We called to let them know and they did an amazing service recovery – top notch customer service which I appreciated greatly.

The empanadas will keep me coming back here, they were delicious and definitely the highlight of their menu. Keep up the good work and the great customer service!

  6. Small Colombian restaurant with consistently good food. I have yet to find someone who doesn't like their empanadas. I personally love their maduro rellenos with chicken and their medium green "hot" sauce. Their cholados are very good as well, like a snow cone topped with real fruit (strawberries, bananas, pineapple) and coconut shavings.

  7. For a place as small as this, La Masa serves up huge flavor! I'd been meaning to check this place out for a while and I honestly wish I'd tried it sooner. Our waitress was very sweet and our service was great. But the food was amazing! I was too hungry for empanadas so I went with one of their entrees, pollo horneado, which featured chicken generously seasoned in a wonderful cilantro lime seasoning with rice, beans, maduros and salad. I devoured everything on my plate, and had absolutely no complaints. I washed it all down with a passionfruit juice that complemented the meal perfectly.

Though I didn't order any of their popular empanadas, my husband had several, even ordering seconds of some of his favorite ones. The waitress recommended a new flavor that tasted like a margherita pizza and my husband couldn't stop raving over the taste and aroma of fresh basil. The empanada menu is extensive and the flavor options are absolutely creative. It really seems like you can't go wrong with anything you choose. I can't wait to go back soon to try a few of the empanadas myself. This place is a serious Bronx gem!

  8. Nice family business. I ordered to go. Got two empanadas, the spinach and cheese,  and Pizza, also the Yucatan fries, a shrimp arepa with the fixings and a beef patacon with the beans and stuff. They're gave me a variety of sauces too. The place is very clean, but the order took forever. The food comes right out of the fryer, so expect to wait. The food was okay, a 6/10,  not a big fan of the flavors but it was worth the one time experience.
    Happy Yelping 🙂
