I work in the area and this my go to for lunch when I'm in the mood for Chinese. Now the area is basically around Wall Street and the World Trade Memorial so the stores and food spots tend to be conceded with their prices. However, Ho Yip has decent average prices and the food is good. I have yet to get something that I didn't like and the portions are pretty hefty. Plus you even have the option to utilize the buffet and make your own plate (pay by the pound) or you can keep it traditional and simply order your dish of choosing on the opposite side of the buffet.
The service is to the point like any Chinese restaurants, the main thing is that they get you what you want. Also there plenty of seating, they have quite a few tables on the main floor and have additional seating upstairs. They offer delivery and they have daily specials. I heard it gets busy there but most times I go its 2pm or later and there's no rush at all so depending on your plan, time your visit to what suits your needs.
5 stars for the food upstairs.
1 star for the food downstairs.
I am very torn. The upstairs serves some delicious Chinese food. I went once and was VERY impressed by the food (the garlic shrimp was awesome). I quickly went back, but this time went to the hot bar downstairs. The food from downstairs was literally inedible (like I had to spit it out in the middle of chewing, that bad). I'm not sure what to think. I know for sure I won't go to the basement hot bar ever again.
First time here. Good Chinese food in Financial district. I came here when it almost closing time. Lots of people come here to order. I tried the Thai Chicken string bean with white rice. The chicken was good. The string bean was very crispy. Overall good Chinese restaurant for lunch or dinner time. The cashiers were very efficient. They were fast with giving the customers back the change and getting the food. I will come back if I'm in this area.
This is a way better version of chinese take out type of restaurant! It is located close to the world trade center memorial. This place is big & they have lots of tables & chairs too if you wanna eat your food inside the restaurant.
Came here a few times already mostly for lunch & they have a buffet for really cheap & decent price. Most of their food item on the menu range about $6-$8. Surprisingly its rare to find some cheap food that taste good in this neighborhood. They have some noodle soup for the same price range which taste good too.
They do deliveries with $10 minimum. My favorite food is the salt & pepper pork chop with plain or pork fried rice for $7. I love hoyip! Fast delivery & good food! Always coming back!!
Rating is 4 stars, but through an "American Chinese" lens, especially for their lunch buffet food.
My coworker was craving some Chinese food and made me crave Chinese food too (not authentic Chinese, but Americanized Chinese dishes) so we went in search of Ho Yip. Ho Yip is your typical Chinese buffet lunch place that serves Chinatown meats (roast big, bbq pork, Peking duck, etc), made to order stir fry dishes, and noodle soups.
I usually get myself a rice dish or a noodle soup, but I actually went for the buffet this time, which I haven't done in years.
For under $10, I got myself a nice assortment of various meats and vegetables ranging from sesame chicken to sautéed mushrooms. All of it was fairly fresh and it was a pretty fillin g and satisfying meal without being too heavy.
I would recommend the sautéed mushrooms, stir fried noodles, fried chicken wings, and fried pork. All were very flavorful.
Good place for a quick takeout lunch that doesn't get boring while you're eating because there are so many options you can choose from.
After 2pm, the buffet is discounted, and since there is a constant stream of tourists, the food keeps coming out fresh. The food, however, is incredibly salty, so I recommend sticking with vegetable-heavy dishes and also ordering a bottle of water.
JUST DO IT! This place rules! So glad it's only 1 stop from my house because this place has some of the best American Chinese food in town!! It's a counter service & buffet style restaurant, which does a great deal of lunch business from locals that work in FIDI. Only occasionally will you see a tourist in this place.
So what's so amazing about Ho Yip? Well, first off, everything they servce is just mouthwatering!! You really can't go wrong with any of their menu selections. Some stand outs for me include the salt & pepper chicken (OMG), the lo mein, and the ho mein fun (flat noodle). If I have time, I order from the counter, where they make my meal on the spot. If I'm in a hurry, I hit up the buffet, which is always fresh and tasty!
As for atmosphere, this place is very basic… so maybe you wouldn't come here on a date or for an important event. However, if you're looking for a quick, simple lunch place, then you've come to the right place!
The food here is just ok.You have the option of the buffet or ordering from the menu on the wall. It tends to get crowded and seating is limited, so don't count on being able to sit, but the lines move fast. It's a good spot for a quick, easy lunch if you're not looking to do anything fancy. I wouldn't recommend the dumplings (too doughy and oily), but the fried rice was decent.
