  1. Fast food cuban.. Workers are nice. They like to pile on the rice but hold back on the green sauce.

No matter what rice you select, none of them have any taste.  The fried plantains are decent but you only get 4 pieces. The empanadas are practically empty.  And, well, the meat selection… I'll leave that to the meat lovers.

I could do without….any of it. I'd rather go to another spot that's more authentic.

  2. The food is really good, but the service is really inflexible (I've seen them multiple times kick people who waited a long time in the "wrong" line and make them wait a long time in another "correct" line, even though all the counters are lined right next to one another and it would have cost them only a couple extra seconds to make a lot of customers–who are the ones paying, who are imperfect, who make mistakes–very happy) and really stingy (every time I eat here, they plate my rice then take some off the top, they plate my beans then take some off the top, they plate my meat and take some off the top — and it is a regular occurrence to see people making sandwiches take the little bits of extras that don't fit perfectly into sandwiches and throw them in the garbage)! I understand that rent is expensive, but if they just spent a little more time being a little kinder, they would have a lot more repeat customers among locals, rather than just random tourists. But, again, the food is really good.

  3. The worst Sophies location…

Me and my bestie ordered just sides of Guava & Cheese Empanada, Rice & Beans, Fried Green Plantains and Yuca with Garlic Sauce.

The empanada was overpowered by the guava paste and it was hella sweet…donde esta el queso?

Rice & Beans…omg so bland…how can you messed this common dish up

Fried Green Plantains…the only thing that tasted good with the garlic sauce

Yuca with Garlic Sauce…omg so bland as well so I took the rest home because I didn't want to waste food

    Horrible and unsatisfied experience!

Make sure you are paying for your bill as our server handed us the wrong check and it took awhile to get her attention for our right check!

  4. I walked in shortly after 6pm to pick up some Cuban the  special of the day "Ropa Vieja". The translation is shredded beef stew, i can taste onion, garlic, pepper, robust beef flavor and very tender slowly cooked beef. Like something my grandma would make at home. This is actually the first time i had Ropa Vieja here, so I would go with just plain white rice next time. While I was on the buffet line i decided to change out the white rice for arroz com morros. The black rice with black beans was flavorful but somehow it was much more moist than it should be. Since i got the meal as take out
By the time i got home the rice had soaked up all of the juices from the beef stew and it was a bit messy to eat. While i was in line, i told the lady to add some fried plantains. I thought i saw her put them in my plate bit i guess she forgot
As i moved down the line and paid for it, i did not bothered to repeat the order to the cashier. So my fried plantains were not added to my take out, which would have been a nice touch to my meal. Overall a good choice of cuban food but not a great choice for take out.

  5. 3.5 stars. Pricey for the quality and fast casual vibe that I got. Service is extremely fast and efficient. Then again, it's hard not to be when it's basically a cafeteria style buffet line. I got a plate with some seafood and sweet plantains. Everything tasted aite but nothing stood out. An important note though: the seafood was EXTREMELY salty. Those trying to avoid hypertension should probably avoid this option.

  6. Two words: ropa vieja. This dish gives me life because it's so comforting when you're having a terrible work day or a bad commuting experience in the am, or just plain frustrated with life. This dish gives you all you need: tasty rice and beans, and juicy, flavorful shredded beef. It's so simple and filling and comforting. Plus affordable and can be split into two meals! Other great dish to order is the pernil.

  7. Sometimes I just hate going into an unfamiliar territory. The stress level is too damn high! Do I order here? Does the line start from here or there?! Once I step foot into this place, I just had to order, there was no turning back. Let's do this.

Ordered #2 Rice and Bean with two empanadas. I was asked which rice would I like, with me unable to hear if she provided me with an option, and I wasn't able to see what type of rice there was, I just stood there staring and asked her to repeat, in the end I gave up and choose white. Then she proceed to asking what type of beans would I like, now at this point the server was definitely getting aggy with me. LOL  I admit, I can be deaf at times, good thing I went with a coworker who assisted with helping me with the order. Phew.

After I got the rice and beans, I went to the cashier and she asked me which empanadas did I want. No options was provided, I had to ask what empanadas did they have, unfortunately there was no cheese so I just pick the chicken and beef.

Half way towards finishing the rice and beans, I got bored of eating it…  Actually had to force myself to finish all of it since I know I will be eating dinner late today.  The green sauce.. was interesting..  for some reason it was quite addictive.

The chicken empanada was ehhhh, too dry for my taste.Thumbs up for the beef empanada!

2 empanadas with a choice of soup or rice & beens with soda or water : $9.99 + tax = $10.88

  8. I've had both the Cuban and the Turkey Cuban. Highly recommended.  They do both take-out and dine-in and have a huge lunch crowd, so the place can get cramped.  You also end up waiting a decently long time for a sandwich if you're getting it to go.  The staff is efficient, but could definitely be a bit more friendly. Overall, it's worth a try if you're in the Financial District!
