Jose Tejas
“The menu is as oddball as the great tex-mex, country and rockabilly music they play.”
“The only thing I order is the Fajitas and it's because they're so good I don't want to order anything else lol.”
“Other choice items are the chimichurra steak, the blackened chicken or blackened salmon (you can try the last two on a Caesar salad).”

What can I say about this place other than the fact that it's AMAZING?! This might be one of the few places with decent prices drinks and you are actually able to taste the alcohol. $8 for a margarita and I can feel it ? Sounds like a deal to me.
The staff is always very friendly and the waiters are attentive. The ambiance is also a plus. I love this place as you can see from my 5/5 and I would recommend it to anyone
Just a 20 minute drive from Rutgers and conveniently placed right off rt-1. Jose Tejas is a super fun looking place with a lot of character. The dining room is literally just one huge room and there is a bar while waiting for your table with very reasonably priced drinks.
To start I have to rave about the service in Jose Tejas. AMAZING. 10/10 service. Before you realize you are out of soda or water, yiu look back and its filled. The best part is that they never take your drink. They bring you a new one first and then take your drink. Seems simple doesn't it?
Then the food. My god the food is just insane. I HIGHLY recommend getting the gumbo. The meat is just so tender and perfectly spiced. This time I got a shrimp and crawfish quesadilla and it did not disappoint.
The prices are just silly low for what you get. You MUST come if in town
This eclectic not-just-Mexican spot is Garden State institution and my favorite! There is no disputing that Tejas is incredibly delicious. ALLLL of the food is always uniquely flavored and awesome. It tastes fresh, well made and flavorful. It's also reasonably priced and well worth it for how tasty it all is. I always get a cup of their awesome gumbo and it's only $2.50.
Their fajitas are their signature dish but Willie Loman attention should be paid to their other entrees. Believe dat! The crawfish etoufee is great and their chimmichuri flank steak – forgetttttaboutit. This is the best thing on the menu. The salad Verdi really makes it. I'm also a fan of the blackened chicken and even their salads.
tl;dr
Apps – order the Camptown shrimp
Entree – any fajitas
Drank – sangria or beer
Dessert – they don't serve dessert! Eat and get the Hell out! They have an hour+ wait at any given time. Try not to eat the delicious leftovers in the car.
I looooooove Jose Tejas! Be warned… There will ALWAYS be a line out the door… Monday-Sunday. That should be a good indication of how great this place is. Worth the wait. My favorite dish is the steak chimichuri. I had to deduct a star because the last time I was there I was informed that they no longer carry Patron and now Avion is their top shelf tequila of choice.
I'm sorry. Avion is not worth the up charge. #teampatron
Jose Tejas is my absolute favorite. I have been coming here since I was 10 and they are still the best in the area. I have moved to PA but when I go home and my parents ask where I want to eat….it's always here. They get extremely busy for dinner, especially on the weekends so be prepared to wait. They don't take reservations but I don't blame them. Their chips and salsa are always made fresh. I always make sure to ask our waiter or waitress to bring us some fresh. Their menu is not that large but everything on the menu is amazing. My favorites are the fajitas, crawfish ettoufe, crawfish and shrimp ceasar salad, jambalaya and do yourself a favor and try the gumbo. It has a nice little kick to it. If you are in the area and do not stop to try the place….you are doing yourself a huge disadvantages!
What's not to love about this place. The drinks are cheap and you can taste the liquor. As boring as it sounds the house salad was tasty with all of its toppings, that was some pretty good cheese on the salad. The place is somewhat loud but that's perfect if you are dining with groups or kids. The staff moved very quick but the wait time to get a table was insane, over an hour. Did we wait? Yep! And my buzz from my margarita was worth it.
The food here is amazing! I usually write very detailed reviews, but there really isn't much to say about this place other than it's amazing. To add to that, the prices are very reasonable. So with that said, Jose Tejas is always crowded! Of the many times that I've been here, I was lucky to have been able to walk in once (on Easter, of all days. Lol). Aside from that, there was only one other time that I've been there that the wait was less than a half hour long. You kind of know what's up before you even get to the hostess stand because your first obstacle is gonna be trying to find a parking spot. I don't know if the parking lot is really small or if this place is just always that crowded, but there's definitely been a couple times when I pulled up and just left and went somewhere else to eat because I couldn't find a parking spot. And the same can be said by some of my friends. Anyways, as I said in the beginning, the food is great. The drinks are great. The prices are great, and the atmosphere is pretty cool. So in my opinion Jose Tehas is one of the best bangs for the buck in the area… If you don't mind the wait.
Strawberry margaritas are amazinggggg. They make them fresh compared to the mango ones. Also the food comes in huge portions. They have good options for vegetarians. So check it out. It is one of the better foods in the area if you want mexican. The quality, quantity, and service go beyond what is expected for such a busy place.
