“Packed with regulars who are all hispanic and not chino”
“Many people don't know this, but Cuba is/was home to thousands of Chinese nationals fleeing Mao, and it is in Cuba where this kind of cuisine was perfected.”

This place has been open forever. It's a Chino-Latino place where half the menu is Chinese and the other half is Spanish. I remember coming here years ago and really enjoying the food, on the my last visit I wasn't so blown away. I got the stuff I normally get but it was just lacking.
The food:
Caldo Gallego- It's a white bean soup with collard greens, chorizo, pigs feet and chunks of meat. I remember really loving this soup but it was just OK my last visit. It was the same soup I always get but it felt like it was missing something. And the pigs feet had this weird pigs feet taste to it. It was cooked but it had an odd taste and the foot itself just tasted boiled without seasoning. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Chicharrones de pollo sin hueso- with house special fried rice and maduros. It's boneless fried chicken chunks, the chicken had good flavor and a nice crunch but the chicken was greasy. The fried rice was nothing special, but the maduros were nice. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
Bistec de Palomilla- It's a tenderloin steak that is pounded out and is cooked all the way. The beef has nice flavor but is chewy and overcooked, there are a ton of onions that come with the dish but the dish itself is greasy.
reviewers reviewers, you guys don't understand this place!! Mi Estrella is a Jackson Heights legend.
Seriously, my parents have been going there since the 70's, brought us there countless times, and now I go there and have introduced many people to this place. The thing is, you need to know what to order. First off, in all my years going we have had any chinese food. It's a cuban chinese joint and so we go for those plates.
**this place outdoes La Caridad on the upper west side, hands down.
Here is what my family and I get every time we go there. Give it a try and I don't think you will be disappointed. Choose from:
1) Bistec ala Palomilla with house fried rice and tostones.
it is a soft and thin steak but comes in massive portions that two people can eat from it.
2) Asopao de Camarones (a thick shrimp soup) really good
3) a large order of their house fried rice… sprinkle some lemon on it and you are set.
4) Pollo ala Plancha (grilled chicken breast, thin cut)
DO NOT DEVIATE from those choices…….I did once and was sad, now I stick to the usual.
enough said….it is delicious!
Sometimes it's not all about the $$$ for great food. You just got to know where to find them! I absolutely enjoyed myself at this restaurant. I had no expectations, but to find that for the prices here and the portions. Couldn't be beat! Where else can you find a place that serves you porkchops, steak, chicken, with 2 fried eggs over fried rice for little to no money at all !? no where! I recommend the crackling chicken, the Oxtail, and of course the super combo if your feening for some meat ! As of course parking is always apart of my reviews. It's hard to park hence the 1 star down!
I've been wanting to try this place out for a while and finally had the opportunity to go the other night. Starving and craving Chinese/ Spanish food, my husband and I came in to dine here.
We were seated promptly as there were only 2 other customers in the restaurant. My husband was craving breaded chicken and I ordered the chicharrones de pollo (fried chicken bits) with side of beef fried rice and plantains. First off the portions for the price are unbeatable!! Huge portions of food. But the quality? Horrible!!!
My husbands chicken was tough and tasted weird. My chicken felt like it was dipped and bathed in alcohol and then just greased up in oil. Super greasy and disgusting. The beef fried rice was ok, but very greasy as well. We ended up spending about $20 something dollars and not eating the food.
I was so disappointed, because the place had decent reviews. I can't imagine ever coming here again, because the food quality was just not good.
