  1. Visited this restaurant for my book club meeting and I can say that overall I like this place.

It was pretty empty when we arrived on a late Saturday afternoon.  There was only one waitress working and it took her awhile to come to our table.  We finally gave our drink/appetizer orders but had to ask for bread which we noticed was placed immediately at a table of people who arrived after us.

We ordered a pitcher of Sangria (it's $6 every day for Happy Hour) and I have to say that I liked the Sangria – good flavor, ample fruit and it had a kick to it.  For apps we had the plantain chips with guacamole and the grilled sausage.  Both were very good although the guacamole could have been a little more spicy for my liking.

For entrée I had the grilled shrimp with yellow rice and red beans.  Everything was very good – although for some reason it seemed to be lacking some sort of seasoning but it was good none the less.  Two book club members had the Ropa Vieja and one had the Baby Churrasco.  They also enjoyed their meal, although the Baby Churrasco was well done instead of medium as requested.

I would go back to again as I think it was good food at a good price.

  2. We were walking northward along Riverside Park and came upon this place. I like Cuban food. Mr. Joy likes happy hour. When we walked in, the place was pretty empty. We got a booth immediately.

We each got a $5 mojito. They were pretty good!

We also got a couple of sandwiches from their takeout menu, which they kindly brought to our table.
First, the bread basket they brought us was filled with bread that looked like it was sliced up and haphazardly pressed in a plancha. It was also stale.

Papa Rellena ($3) – fried mashed potato balls stuffed with seasoned ground beef:
What an interesting idea. First, it is one giant ball. It comes with a couple of tomato slices. The beef was pretty good. I just wish the mashed potato had more seasoning.

Cubano ($5.50) – roast pork, ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, mustard on pressed Cuban bread with plantain chips:
This sandwich was okay at best. They use the same bread as the the one in the bread basket, also a little stale, which made the sandwich taste kind of dry.

Pan con Chorizo ($7) – grilled chorizo with caramelized onions on pressed Cuban bread with plantain chips:
Same dry, stale bread. At least this sandwich had chorizo & caramelized onions, so it tasted spicy & sweet. This was definitely the better of the two sandwiches.
Both come with plantain chips, which always taste pretty bland to me.

If I'm ever around again, I would come here for a couple of drinks during happy hour (everyday from 6-10pm). The food, not so much.

  3. Came here today and enjoyed an extensive dominican breakfast with a cortadito and all. I love how they let you relax and pretty much it's like you're at your house and they are simply your hired hands.

I can't rave enough about this place as my destination for a "home cooked meal"

  4. My friends took me out to dinner on Monday night and they gave me the option of barbecue or Cuban food since they're right next door to each other. Well, I can get BBQ almost any time but Cuban food, that's another story. And so we ended up at Floridita and I'm super happy with the choice.

The pernilito! It was so good. It was so large. It was delicious. Cooked to perfection, you didn't even need the knife they served it with because the pork just pulled off the bone with your fork. It was all I could hope for. The yellow rice and black beans that accompanied the pernilito were good although a few grains of my rice were crunchy. (Maybe I got a bit of the concon from the bottom of the pot and I should brag.)  Anyway over all, my meal was delicious and I had leftovers to savor the next day!

I really hope to make it back to Floridita to sample more of the menu. Based on this first visit, it will be quite the treat. Oh, and get ready to practice your Spanish, you might need it!

  5. Delivery is horrible. I ordered over an hour ago to my office that is 10 minutes away and I STILL don't have my food.

  6. It is unfortunate to have to rate this place as a three because it could potentially be a four if they had better service. You have to try so hard to get some assistance even if its just for a water.

    SERVICE
Truly horrendous especially in comparison to their other spot in Dyckman NYC. Be prepared to order what you want for the entire night because you might be waiting just that for the server to come back

    FOOD
Amazing food!!!! I always love their food. I tried the tostones with steak on there and it was absolutely delicious. However, my friend and I split the arroz con pollo and there was hardly any rice. We had chicken with some rice opposed to rice with chicken and it was rather soupy which is disappointing. Although, the food was still delicious. Very seldom do I go to this restaurant and not like their food, they are consistent with that.

    DRINKS
The white sangria is SO GOOD and was also made very strong when I went [on a thursday night 9-11-14].

    OVERALL
Good place to eat, solid food, great music [very hispanic so I love it] but it is a little loud but bearable. I do recommend it as a place to eat. AND they have great bread =]

  7. Miami's Cuban culture is the one thing I still miss about leaving the area over twenty years ago. Twenty years? Dios mio.

But I've got a Cuban black bean recipe from a dear friend's abuela. And I know how to make a cafecito with a Bialetti Moka pot. Fortunately, Cafe Bustelo can be found pretty much anywhere these days.

What's harder to find is actual good Cuban food. And Harlem's Floridita was like a taste of home. From the moment when I sat down and put a slice of Cuban toast into my mouth, I knew this place was legit.

We were there for dinner, so no sandwiches for me. But there was lechon and ropa vieja. The ropa was fantastic, and the lechon was quite good. It's not fair to compare it to what my Miami friends can whip up, but it didn't quite deliver on that same intensity of flavor or tenderness.

You know what? I didn't care. I was so pleased as punch to be eating this kind of comforting, simple food from my homeland, without having to fly back to the 305.

I'm totally going back, and even with all the culinary bounty that exists in NYC, I've got to try the Cuban sandwich. Because there's nobody upstate that has figured out how to make a proper one, and I have high hopes that Floridita can nail it.

  8. Cuban to the top! Best best and best cuban ever!
Every dish and I mean every dish (but the tres leches) is amazing and to share for sure. The first time we went there with friends. We were four persons so we order some appetizers and one entrée each. Wrong!! There was enough food to feed a zoo!
So, if you are not a cannibal you can order one appetizer and an entrée for two people OR just die from a food coma. You can always take it home! Nice Brunch next day….
The ropa vieja is a must and also the lechón asado. Their rice and beans are delicious.
The seafood appetizer – tostones con mariscos – are mouth watering. Also the croquettes are incredible.
It's super cheap, which makes your totally worth the experience: amazing food, lots of food and for so cheap.
The brunch and lunch are literally a steal! 6 or 7 dollars for the same amount of food. The Carne con papas equals the ropa vieja in flavor.
If you want a cubano sandwich go to Havana Cafe. This place has good sandwiches but a little bit in the dry side. Anyway, they are a good option too.
I cannot get tired of this place!
