Jazz Standard

“Monday night is always a hit with Mingus Mondays, with either the Mingus Big Band or the Mingus Orchestra playing.”

“Service is super friendly, especially Katherine D., my server, and there's excellent acoustics and sight lines throughout.”

“We loved hearing Jimmy Cobb play, but were just as impressed, if not more so, by his band.”

  1. Visited last night. Great jazz music. Great atmosphere. Cute spot. Good service. Good food (going down).

I took away two stars because about 4 hours later, I was ridden with upset stomach and vomiting. Not sure what the cause was, but I had the chicken wings, sea bass with shrimp creole & banana creme pie. Currently still sick.

I'd go back for the music, not likely for the food.

  2. Went there twice for live jazz. Table is great and you can enjoy your dinner with jazz. Lighting is romantic and classy and jazz echoes perfectly in this medium size space. It's amazing.

  3. I've only been to Jazz Standard once, but I really did enjoy my time there.  I bought my husband tickets to a show back in December and the band did a great job.  I don't know much about jazz, but the show was enjoyable even for me, a novice.  We did get some food and drinks, drinks were fine, pretty standard (we only had wine and beer) and we did get wings (in addition to some other food).  I will say this, the wings were soooo good, I mean yumm.  If I get the chance to go back I will definitely order them again.  I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys wings.  Atmosphere is what you would expect for a jazz club, seating is a little tight, but they are trying to fill seats.  Only other compliant I have is that it's a little pricey.  Otherwise it was a great experience.

  4. Fun date night idea! BBQ + Jazz….who can say no to that?!

The BBQ was tasty! We ordered the BBQ chicken (delish, and my fave of the night!) and the crispy chicken sandwich (good, but the BBQ chicken was better). We also had the mac n cheese – creamy & the perfect accompaniment. My only critique is that I wish they included sides with the large entrees (you have to purchase them on the side).

The jazz was excellent! They played for a solid hour and kept us entertained the whole time. My husband and I didn't have reservations but were still able to get in 5m before the show started on a Friday night – though we didn't get the best seats in the house, we were able to enjoy the music and food.

The cost is $35 per person + dinner….it was worth it for a special treat!

  5. The live music here is amazing, the food was just okay. I came here for New Years and there was a prix fixe menu. The oysters were okay, I didn't care for the dumplings but I really liked the dessert. The band was great but there wasn't a dance floor. I would've given it 5 stars if the venue had a tiny dance floor.

  6. Been patron for many years.  Stellar performances.
Excellent acoustics,  delicious food from Blue Smoke upstairs,  efficient,  great staff.
    Always a pleasure.  Highly recommended.

  7. First of all I love all live music, especially jazz music it's so mellow, NYC has a ton a jazz places but so many of them are little small spots with minimums at the table. I decided to come here on a Saturday night at 7:30 and saw the vinicius cantuaria quintet and they were amazing, performed for a little over 1 hour and we were able to sit right next to the stage, this place is first come first sit so I suggest getting here at least 30 min before showtime so you can grab the seat you want, I also suggest buying your ticket in advance online just in case it sells out, plus they sit the reserved parties first. I didn't get food but I probably will next time the food is from the blue smoke bbq that's right upstairs, drinks are available too but they aren't required so if you just pay your cover you won't be required to get anything else unless you want and you won't be pressured by the wait staff, another thing I like is that it is spacious in there, you don't feel like you're sitting on top of another person, I will definitely be back it was great

  8. There are some aspects about the Jazz Standard that are five-star, primarily the music. I've seen great artists here, such as Joe Locke and Azar Lawrence. The sound is also great in the venue.

A few things are four stars: The food is quite good–the ribs, brisket and mac and cheese were all delicious (as you'd expect for a jazz venue associated with a BBQ restaurant upstairs–Blue Smoke.)  The venue itself is good but not great, with a number of blocked views thanks to a sizable support pole near the stage. Get there early to secure a good seat, but know…

That the Jazz Standard publishes a "Doors Open" time and then does not open its doors at that time.  The doors open time does not mean you get to enter and sit down but instead you get to line up in a cramped, uncomfortable stairwell and wait another 15 to 30 minutes until they let you in.  My last two times, we've arrived just before the published "Doors Open" time and waited a combined 50 minutes on the stairway before being allowed in. Personally, I'd think the management would WANT all those waiting people sitting down and ordering drinks!

Also, a word of warning:  The booths near the kitchen door seem desirable because they have a good view of the stage, but beware:  There is noise from the kitchen that, for me anyway, reduced the enjoyment of one show.  The next time I want to the Jazz Standard I selected a seat fruther from the kitchen, and I found that preferable.

I was very pleased when the Jazz Standard responded to an email I sent with some of the suggestions noted above (don't keep people waiting on the stairs after "doors open" time and please keep the noise from the kitchen down.)  This business cares about its patrons, and I always appreciate that!
