I've always wanted to come here and I finally had the chance to. Of course I had my eye on the Pechuga De Valle. Which is the stuffed chicken breast with plantains. Before I venture into the food let me start off by giving you a run down of the quaint spot.
A previous reviewer mentioned that CW can accommodate between 65-75 people, but I don't see that happening. I think seating would be scaled down if you visited here. The ambience reminded me of a luau. From the decor to the drinks. The chairs are unbelievably heavy and awkward. They were uncomfortable and provided no support whatsoever, but don't let that deter you from stopping by.
We sat at the bar where we were greeted by a young girl, I didn't catch her name but she was sweet. Both bartenders actually functioned as waitresses as well. The place was pretty empty, but the music was blaring at an obnoxious level. It was hard to have a conversation and watch the underweight boxing match that played on the tvs that aligned the bars ceiling.
I ordered the Pechuga De Valle because of the rave reviews and also it was the only thing on the menu I had my heart set on. It usually comes with mashed Yuca and a House Salad but I opted for Rice and Beans instead of the Yuca. My meal was delicious, with true authentic flavor, and a delightful mix of Caribbean fun on my palate.
I came to Crazy Willy's while on a date with my husband. We were looking for a bar/restaurant in which we could enjoy a nice dinner while watching a baseball game. Upon entering the restaurant, my husband and I were very surprised at how authentically Dominican the place felt. Everything from the furniture, artwork, and music transported us back to our home country. Although quite modest in its appearance, Crazy Willy's provides a nice ambience. We were also pleasantly surprised by how good our food tasted and how nicely the food was presented. I ordered a savory vegetarian eggplant dish that was creamy and came with a side of tostones. My husband ordered the Ave Marina; grilled chicken breast wrapped around smaller pieces of shrimp. This dish was accompanied with a red pepper stuffed with yellow rice and a side salad. He really enjoyed his dish and devoured every morsel. Both dishes averaged out to $26 total, including tax (which we felt was a great price for the large portions).
The only reason I can't give this place a full 4 is because the service was extremely slow. Our waitress was very sweet and accommodating, but our food took a very long time to arrive and she didn't come to check up on us unless we flagged her down. There were only 2 waitresses for about 6 tables, so they did seem pretty busy. We also weren't too impressed with our dessert. It was a tres leches cake that tasted great, but it took about 30 minutes to get to our table. We weren't even in the mood to eat it anymore by the time it arrived. We also noticed that the cakes come pre-packaged and are not made on premises.
We had an overall good experience at Crazy Willy's. The positives with this restaurant far outweigh any negatives. We will be back for more. Next time, for drinks!
This is one of those places that I want to keep a secret because it's so good.
I've been 3 or 4 times now (yes I know it's taken me too long to review it).
– the food is incredible. So much flavor. Probably the most authentic Dominican food in the outer boroughs. According to my bf only his mom and maybe places in DR could compete with it. Everything is clearly carefully made and while there are some creative takes on things, they stick to traditional flavors and dishes and it works.
Atmosphere at this spot is nice and they often have live music late at night.
It's easy to get to, right off the J train.
I decided to come here with a friend on my 3 hour break from school at Queens College.
We came on a Tuesday at 1 in afternoon. It was empty, but the staff was ready to serve. We were greeted with a hello and smile (you guys know I love that) from a handsome gentleman who told us we could sit anywhere we would like. We decided to sit at the bar in front of those two large screen televisions.
The decor is great! It's very spacious. It has a Caribbean theme to it. The chairs are kind of heavy so beware. They aren't the most comfortable. They have pictures and little antiques sitting around. They even have a log themed wall that holds a fish tank. Super cool.
Our waitress/bartender was very informative about the drinks. I ordered the "Crazy & Loco" which was their signature mojito. It was BOMB! The bartender really sold me on that drink, I ordered another. My friend got the "Crazy Eddy" which he liked. Then we ordered the clams as our appetizer which wasn't all that, but it was tasty.
On to the the FOOD! I ordered the the most popular dish on the menu which was the Pechuga de Valle. It is fried chicken stuffed with sweet plantains, with a side of delicious mashed Yuca and a salad with Italian dressing. Man that dish is so good. The flavors blended so well together. The idea of stuffing sweet plantains in chicken blew my mind. It gives the chicken the right amount of sweet, tasty goodness. My friend got the Ave Mariana, which was shrimp mixed with chicken, with a side of Spanish rice and a salad. That was also delicious. The flavors that these dishes deliver are just amazing.
If you check-in this restaurant on Yelp, you get a free dessert with any Entree you order. So I decided to get the Tres Leche. I expected it to be small, but they gave me a nice big slice of it, with a beautiful plating presentation.
I would recommend this place hands down. The food is great, the drinks are even better. I can't wait to come back on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday just to experience the late night service this restaurant has to offer.
