Not bad but I've definitely had better. Came hungry and l left full and in the grand scheme of things I guess that is the objective. Nice place with great Latin music playing.
Service was wonderful, but then again I was the only person in there for at least half of my meal, but I digress.
Awesome selection of Dominican style food, I'm sure you will not leave unhappy it's just that as a native Puerto Rican I eat this cuisine all the time so it has to put me in a "Perpetual state of mind blowness"to get 5 stars.
That said finding a place like this while traveling is a joy. Yelp does it again. If you're in the area come and enjoy.
First thing I noticed at 7:30pm on a Saturday night: it was dead. Second thing I noticed: the waitresses barely speak any English. I repeated myself at least five times, saying I needed a table for 7, before I was understood. Ordering was not easy going either.
We came for a birthday dinner and the service was so slow, despite how empty it was. When our food finally did come out, everything was cold. The mofongos did not disappoint however, and it seems like each one comes with a different sauce-the pollo mofongo was crack because it came with a cheesy one. The steak came with a gravy-like sauce. My steak was completely cold although it was marinated well. Half of us who ordered the steak had steaks twice as large as the other halves, meaning they need to work on equal portion sizes.
Pass on the sangria- had a weird aftertaste. The mojitos were decent but we had to wait for them- the waitress said she had to go buy the ingredients??
I'm glad I tried Rancho Mofongo on a whim, but I won't be coming back. The dish I had was spot-on, but the service and atmosphere were negative– I expected better from both. Rancho Mofongo tries to be too much at once: a restaurant, hookah bar, and lounge all in one, but doesn't succeed at it. I'll explain this at the end of my review.
I tried Rancho Mofongo's $25 seafood and lobster dish, which tasted fresh and soft. The orange colored broth/sauce definitely added just the right amount of taste, and I'm glad this wasn't fried.
I enjoyed this at the bar, and was watching the Warriors vs Spurs NBA game on one of their old-school TVs, whose screen gave the televised motion pictures a nice vintage look. My waitress letting me change the channel to watch this game was a plus. (I've been mentioning NBA games a lot in my recent reviews, because I've been frequenting restaurants and bars while following the Warriors to their record-breaking 73rd win.)
I liked how funky and interesting the decorations were: multicolored strobe lights, four TV screens (including one high definition one), and a hip vibe. I wish I knew in advance, though, that this place is also a hookah bar– two people sitting at the other end of the bar were smoking hookah, and they were the only ones doing so.
While the smell wasn't horrible (it was sweet), it bothered me since it was strong, so I changed seats in the middle of my stay while watching the basketball game.
My server took the time to tell me her recommendations on the menu. But I felt flustered that she forgot that I ordered flan for dessert, and didn't apologize for that: I waited 20+ minutes for the flan to come out after ordering it.
At that point, I told the other host (not my own server) that I had been waiting awhile for the flan, and asked her to check up on it. Then, my own server came up to me and said, "My co-worker said you needed something?"
I looked at her in disbelief and wondered how she forgot my dessert order. So I ended up telling her to cancel my order, and got dessert somewhere else.
Also: the music that played in the store suddenly became super loud at the end of my stay in the restaurant / at the end of the basketball game. A customer in the back was dancing next to someone at the laptop computer where the music was coming from, and I hated the shrill noise of the music– whoever cranked up the volume clearly didn't care about the other customers in the restaurant, which is why I left quickly.
My night at Rancho Mofongo started off okay, but became dramatically worse as time went on. It's cool that I enjoyed it one time, and that'll be the only time.
