  1. My fave spot near NYU for a delicious, reasonably priced and healthy quick lunch! I love their bulgogi rice bowl. Will come often.

  2. There's this bibimbap place in Tarrytown that I've been dreaming about for months, but given the distance and the lack of a car, I haven't been able to make my way there. So, imagine my excitement when I discovered this place on Yelp so close to campus! I knew I had to give it a try…

I like that their menu is really simple, making the decision-making easy for those of us who can never quite decide on what to eat. It basically comes down to: type of meat, cooked or raw veggies, white or brown rice, how you like your fried egg prepared, and sauces (if any). I went with the bulgogi bowl with cooked veggies, brown rice, and an egg made sunny-side up. Btw, they default to cooked veggies if you don't tell them otherwise.

For an even $13, the meal was a bit lacking. I think expected a greater variety of toppings.. or just more greens. Everything was really yummy and flavorful, and the egg was perfectly runny, but I think I was expecting a bit more substance..especially for the price!

Either way, a great meal to take to go – which I'd recommend since the restaurant gets a bit stuffy with the open kitchen layout. I dined in, and ended up smelling really greasy.

  3. I've noticed Bowllin' walking around the NYU area and thought it seemed pretty interesting. I finally came in to grab a quick lunch on my way back to the office from picking up a package in the area.

Perhaps their Korean rice bowls are better but I was so disappointed by their poke bowl. First off, they discontinued the sauces I wanted, but didn't mark it off on any of their menus. Fine, so the cashier recommended their yuzu wasabi sauce so I tried that.

It was made pretty quickly and I took it back to the office. First off, they use really really hot rice for the poke bowl so the walk back to the office the steam cooked my salmon. The salmon chunks itself were kind of small and the amount was very little. There was a lot of side items – it comes with cucumbers, kani, seaweed salad, avocado, edamame, and masago. That was a nice touch but I really wished there was more poke.

I don't think I'll be back…and even if I do, I wouldn't get the poke bowls ever again. For $15 it was really too expensive.

  4. A good place for what it is: a casual, healthy rice bowl eatery meant for college students (it's right in the middle of where all the NYU buildings are). It's pricey for such simple food, but I still enjoyed my food.

It's easy to miss, especially since there's construction going on overhead so the sign is blocked, but when you hit M2M (an Asian convenience store–ask worth checking out) it's just a few doors down. The inside is small with a row of seats at the bar by the window and about 4 small tables, but it's clean and cute. You order your food at the counter and they'll call out your food item when it's done.

The menu lets you choose a grain (white or brown rice–I recommend the brown rice, which is actually more like wild rice and very flavorful just on its own), a protein (Korean style meats, pan fried tofu, or vegan beef), cooked or raw vegetables, and an egg (you can specify how you want it I think). If you want kimchi fried rice you can pay $3 extra to add meat to it.

I'm not a fan of fake meat, so I opted for the tofu bowl with brown rice and cooked veggies, no egg. I also asked for no sesame oil on the tofu and instead got spicy sauce, which is just gochujang. The tofu was very good…not really fried much, which is how I like it. Like I said, the rice was very yummy just on its own. The veggies were flavorful too. All in all, it was filling and healthy meal.

I recommend this place for NYU students or people who live nearby and want their fix of flavorful Asian food without having to venture to Ktown or Chinatown.

  5. Came with a friend in search for quick food before our concert at Webster Hall so we went to Yelp in hopes of finding that.  My friend also needs to adhere to a gluten free diet so we decided Korean rice bowls were a great option!  He got a bulgogi rice bowl that had quite a lot of things and only took a few minutes to make.  I ordered a large mandoo soup which had 6 dumplings, loaded with veggies like kale, squash, and seaweed.  My soup did take a bit longer (he told me it'd take about 8 minutes when I ordered) but it was piping hot and delicious. We left pretty happy and ready for our concert.  It's a nice, small place and it's not limited to just rice bowls – there's sandwiches and dumplings as well!

It's a bit pricier than your typical "fast food" but it is good quality and I truly enjoyed it.  If you're looking for a good, hearty, quick option, Bowllin's got it.

  6. This place opened quietly in a neighborhood where new buisnesses are making a splash. I'd passed a few times and decided to pop in when I needed a quick lunch before a meeting. There was one other patron inside but I felt adventurous.  Even though they have a Chipotle-like lineup, everything is covered so you're kind of ordering blind. It took a minute to figure out the menu and after I decided on a sandwich I was told they're being taken off the menu. Ok, so the most affordable options are gone, cool.  Didn't want rice and the sauce options are questionable (out of season blueberries for a meat bowl?) so I went for a salad. It came with lettuce / cabbage, a 1/4 cup of bulgolgi, and dry bread… for $12. It's since become known in my office as  "Kelle's Sad, Expensive Salad".  I went into a meeting with it and was asked the following:
"Where'sthe rest?"  – This is it.
"Why's the bowl so big?" – They put a huge hunk of bread I didn't want in to make it look full.
"Is it good at least?" – Flavor's ok. It's more of a slaw, I didn't expect this much cabbage.

Service was average. Polite, but answers to my questions were incomplete.  I was amused to be told "Keep your reciept, we'll call your number", even though I was the only person placing an order. I wish Bowllin' well but it's hard to support small, expensive portions of average flavors when Korilla BBQ is a few blocks away.

  7. This place looked like a promising quick lunch option. I had the fish, my friend had the chicken, and my other friend had the beef, and we all got stomachaches after. While the ingredients look fresh such as the hot protein, the veggies and the rice, it wasn't worth the stomachache after. Also, the wait was 20 minutes after we had placed the order which is too long for when you're just picking up something for lunch. I would skip this.
