The price is right at Sakura… But the quality just isn't there yet. There's only three dishes that I thoroughly enjoy here: steamed flounder, chicken with broccoli, and hot and sour soup. What's the good in a buffet if you only ever get three things they serve? Hibachi bar is anti-climactic. Not a lot of flavor, just lots of sauce and oil. The sushi is pretty bland as well. I usually just pick at the tuna roll, but nothing to write home about.
Service is actually not bad. We've been here a hand full of times and the waitresses are really nice and attentive- they come by often to clear our table and refill our drinks.
What I do enjoy about this place is their ice cream bar! They have individually wrapped desserts from strawberry shortcake bars to those ice cream cups you scoop out with the mini wooden spoons. Brought me back to my childhood once I saw it. We have at least two items from the cart everytime we visit.
As I expected, it's pretty much the same as the previous Royal Buffet but with a different name and a few aesthetic changes. The staff here are much friendlier than those from the previous ownership. I'm not sure if it's just me, but it also seems like the elevated seating area on the left side of the place is used more frequently now. Lunch is $7.99 (11am to 3:30pm).
I was here for about an hour and saw the cooks constantly subbing in new metal trays of food around the clock. The more popular items–most of the seafood dishes, chicken on a stick, seafood delight, the meatballs with shrimp, etc.–tend to have a little more flavor than others. A lot of people go for the sushi, so I was glad to see that they look and taste a lot better than before. There isn't too much of a variety, but good enough to fill your sushi craving.
The desserts are standard, with my personal favorite being the sugared peanuts. I suggest skipping the flan. It was disgusting and tasted like the base was made of something other than egg. Their flan has the shape and color you would expect, but I did not like the taste at all. Overall, Sakura Grill is solid so far. I don't frequent buffets much but wouldn't mind stopping by for another quick lunch.
This location has had a good buffet in it for years, even if the name and ownership keeps changing. Previously it was Royal Buffet, then it closed and after several months of renovation reopened as Sakura. It is "the buffet by Marshall's." For $8 during a weekday lunch, you can have your pick among many favorites. It's about the same price as getting takeout, but you can have a little bit of many things instead of just one thing. In fact it's a better deal because you can have the dumplings and the hot and sour soup, etc. It's all included. Dessert and fruit are also in there. Today I had flan, among other things, which was great because flan is one of those desserts I crave but rarely buy. Got my flan fix, and tons of good food (see tip) well worth the price.
This is a popular buffet, clean; good people staffing it. My parents like it and feel comfortable here; it is quality time.
I had high hopes for this buffet. I've been to a few such buffets and I have certain expectations:
* variety of dishes
* sushi counter
* dessert area
Variety of dishes: 3 stars. Much smaller than I was hoping. Two of them were chicken w/ broccoli and beef w/ broccoli, so that much less variety among what I could eat. The salt and pepper chicken was probably my favorite.
Quality of dishes: Subpar. Too salty, rather chewy or even gummy for several dishes. When I did the hibachi, my food came out so far superior to every other dish on offer. That says that they're really not putting good ingredients together otherwise. The crab (dinner) was nigh unto inedible. I was scraping the inside of the shell and still got as much shell pieces as actual meat. Salt and pepper shrimp – I mean, if you just eat the entire shrimp with shell on, sure, maybe, but eating the meat without the shell, it was just mushy shrimp.
Sushi: Nonexistent. Every single roll was cooked. Eel on one, fake crab on several, or just vegetables. Absolutely nothing raw. The sign even warns of undercooked fish! So no stars at all for that. Ignore the sushi area entirely.
Desserts: Also subpar. A lot of fruits, a couple of puddings, and a couple of baked goods. Theme of the day: not enough variety.
Might be worth it for lunch if you need to eat a lot and you don't really care how it tastes. You probably won't get sick. But give dinner a pass, and really, there are any number of other buffets in the area, all better, if you have a little travel flexibility.
The dinner buffet is much more pleasant than lunch. There are so much more option. It is one of few places who service oysters and crawfish at buffet table. in addition, they added more sea food, such al clam, shrimp (steamed and fried), salmon, etc in the dinner menu. After all, I think it is the best buffet place on Route 10, unless you want to go west of I-287 and try Minado.
