  1. We come here for a late brunch. They are running out of salmon. So we ordered alternative. The egg dish come out amazing and very unique. I attached a photo too. Check in in Yelp here gives you a free ice tea! Only downside is the location.

  2. As far as Midtown lunch is concerned, there are few places that are unique and not overcrowded. Luckily, Tarantin fulfills those 2 qualities!

I came during Friday lunch and there were only a few people in front of me (none behind me). I was in a healthy mood so I got the Mediterranean Salad and an Arnold Palmer. It took about 10 minutes to prepare and cost me about $15 for both items.

The salad had way too much lettuce, but it was still tasty and fresh. The Arnold Palmer wasn't exactly my style, but it was very refreshing on a hot summer date.

Employees were very friendly. Nice to have Tarantin as an option in the area.

  3. Decent place for a quick brunch, but didn't stand out to me.

I was in the area with two of my friends after we had finished bridesmaid dress shopping at RK Bridal, and we wanted to stop somewhere nearby for a quick bite and did a Yelp search.

Checked out the brunch menu pasted on the window and got excited, lots of tasty sounding brunch options, that also came with fresh juice!

Sadly, when we went in, we were told there were only 2 brunch options available from the list. What?? It was still barely after noon, how could they possibly run out so quickly? Sadly, we chose other options on their regular breakfast menu, that did not come with drinks. When I decided to order OJ anyway, since I already had my heart set on it, I was told that they didn't have any. What?? Second disappointment in just 5 minutes.

Both my friend and I ordered the feta omelette which came with a side salad and was decently tasty.

Tip for the restaurant though: Next time, don't advertise a bunch of items that you don't have!

  4. Firstly, beautiful brick inside and cool ambiance! Ample seating for a cafe, but I do suggest lunch reservations. Friendly service.

Food was delicious and simple. The waitress suggested a special that I wasn't completely wow'd by (rice and vegetable dish but I needed a lot more grilled seasonal vegetables and they were just small pieces cooked in the rice) but I added steak and the steak was absolutely perfectly cooked and seasoned. You can add steak to a salad or sandwich or an entree for $4 which I can absolutely appreciate in NYC.

we also shared steak tacos and those were great!

They offer halal chicken & meat for my halal foodies! That is a definite bonus!

  5. Great coffee but painfully slow service at times.

As in it's taken 20 minutes to get a cup of coffee to go with only 3 people ahead of me slow.

That's really it, I've only been here for the coffee.

  6. Don't walk past by if you're looking for this place.  There's no real huge sign that says CAFE TARANTIN.

The staff are nice people and they're super friendly.  Nothing super unique to keep me coming back though.  I found it kinda annoying that there are some seats missing — for the number of tables they have.. strange?  My party of 3 had to all sit on one side of two tables… it was weird. haha!

Thankfully they do accept the cups app here, huge plus!

  7. This place is such a neighborhood gem! I am so upset that despite living around the corner for years, I only now stumbled upon it.

I was looking for a place to have brunch, and although this place is a bit more casual and coffee shop-like than a traditional brunch restaurant, it was still amazing.

I was lured in by their special weekend (or is it just Sunday?) shakshuka, a delicious stew of tomatoes and soft eggs, one of my favorite morning/mid-day dishes. Although I would have preferred challah bread as an accompaniment, it was still very delicious.

The thing that sets it over the top though is just how kind the people are here! My companion and I were given an unexpected, complimentary pot of mint tea at the end of our meal and we accidentally stayed half an hour past closing time. I had no idea until I checked my phone because they didn't rush us; they didn't give us our check until I asked for it. Just the kindest, kindest people.

I highly recommend this place if you're looking for something low key in the area 🙂

  8. Small businesses are what makes New York City great. Here we have a small little cafe that serves a solid brunch (mostly egg dishes) but is hidden amongst the glut of fast food franchises in the Garment District area. There is such a dearth of quality cafes and lunch spots, so let's hope Tarantin sticks around for a while and provide neighborhood residents and visitors another option. The Shashuka is actually very good with three eggs baked in a sweet tomato paste.

If nothing else, maybe it can help reduce the wait time at Friedman's!
