I love Jollibee! I www craving some Filipino fast food, so I took the train all the way to Woodside from the city just to get my fix! It you get off at the 61st street subway stop, it's a quick two blocks away.
We came here on a Saturday afternoon around 3pm, and the place was crowded. I thought we already missed the lunch crowd, but it was busy the whole time we were there! I'm guessing they have a constant flow of business on the weekends. My party of 2 ordered the three piece Chicken Joy combo ($6.99) with a side of mashed potatoes and pineapple juice, a Halo Halo (4.99), and a peach mango pie ($1.99). We didn't want to order too much because we were having a second lunch right after, but what we ordered already left us pretty stuffed. The Chicken Joy is fried chicken with a sweeter batter. The fried chicken has a perfectly crisp skin and flavorful and the meat is so juicy and tender! The best part is that the chicken is made fresh and so hot when you get it. The Halo Halo is a must get if you've never tried it. It is a dessert with shaved ice, ice cream, pudding, and jellies. It is always so good, and I have to get it every time. My new discovery is the peach mango pie. Omg the peach mango pie is to die for! The pies are similar to the concept of McDonalds' Apple pies, but a 100xs better. The crust is crispy like a egg roll and the peach mango is not too sweet. The pie is the best! I love everything here and never have been disappointed.
If you've never been here before, put this place on your must try list!
I wanted a fried chicken snack and I was nearby so I headed straight for Jollibee.
Their poster on the window advertised a fried chick snack box for $4.49.
Well that is perfect for me.
What I got was two medium size pieces of fried chicken and a small container of mashed potato; the chicken was good and the mashed potato was ok but for $4.49 I expected better. Rate 3/5 for OK.
The Peach Mango Pie was pretty good ($2.00) but also over priced. Rate 4/5.
(This rating is based only on the halo- halo since it's the only thing that I've tried- so far. I'll definitely be back because everyone eating in the packed restaurant made the fried chicken & spaghetti look so poppin'). First off, its pronounced "hah-lo hah-lo" (so you don't have to walk around pronouncing it incorrectly like I did :x) It was around 9PM on a Friday night and the restaurant was PACKED. Every seat was taken and the line was crazy long. I saw on yelp that halo halo was sold here so of course I had to go get it! I've only tried halo halo twice before- (both at Pig & Khao). I know it doesn't seem fair to compare a fast food joint's halo halo with a restaurant's but I am going to anyways because that's all I have to compare it to hahah. It seems like this dessert shares only the shaved ice & the ube ice cream part; everything else seems to be randomly thrown in. I really enjoyed Jollibee's! I just wish the scoop of ice cream was a tiny bit bigger and that there was less red bean. Since it was in a cup, it was pretty hard to mix the ingredients around- especially the red bean part, which sat all the way at the bottom. Maybe I can ask them to tweak it a little bit next time.
I waited about 15 minutes for my order, so I was looking around observing my surroundings. The fried chicken is laid out on a tier of 4 trays and then submerged into the oil. The flour coating before the chicken was fried was very obvious. It all seemed so fresh so I can't wait to come back and try it. I wish it wasn't so far away from everything though.
I grow up to this food. Its my traditional comfort food. Been eating this since I was a little kid back home in Philippines. I'm very thankful we have this in New york. Most of my friends from other state always ask me to bring them some whenever I visit them. We have that intense craving for this especially those who grew up in the Philippines. This fastfood is everywhere in the Philippines.
My favorite is everything! Lol no joke. But the best that they have is the fried chicken. Its way better than those chicken from other fastfood like mcdonalds, kfc, etc. Its very crispy & flavorful! The burger steak with gravy & mushroom is really good too! They have palabok which I always order. Its a noodle dish with shrimp sauce topped with cooked shrimp, crushed chicharon & fried garlic. Its very delicious considering its from a fastfood. They have halo-halo & peach manggo pie for desserts that I highly recommend!
This fastfood is no ordinary fastfood. Its a little expensive compared to any other fastfood but its worth it!
I loveeeeee Filipino foods …. Jollibee? Maybe not so much ….
Every time I visit Jollibee, I try to give it a chance and I am reminded of the reasons why I prefer other places to eat. First, Jollibee is still a fast food chain at the end of the day, which usually results in low quality food. Yes, they are a one-stop shop for different foods, but their quality and type of food served is no different than any other fast food chains. So, bottom line, it's unhealthy still. In addition, whatever they make, someone else does better …. way way better.
Peach Mango Pie? Sorry, McD's Apple Pie wins everyday and twice on Sundays. Chicken Joy? Popeye's rules everything Fried Chicken around me. Mashed Potatoes? Apologies, but that one scoop is nothing compared to the cup from KFC. Halo Halo? Red Ribbon all the way. Spaghetti? OK, you got me there.
To me, it's just like any other fast food chain though, serving burgers and fried chicken. The taste of their food is no different. I will say places like McD, BK, Wendy's do not have something like a Halo Halo, but even then, their Halo Halo isn't great as it is way too iced up. Also, for the price of their food, the quantity doesn't cut it either as evidenced by the small amount of mashed potatoes in the side dish.
I want to love Jollibee, but their food makes the choice for me. If I want real good Filipino food, I still go to the local restaurants in the neighborhood as they won't let you down with their quality and you'll always get your bang for the buck. On a side note, the employees here seems friendly and greet each of their customers nicely so I'll give an extra star for that.
A staple fast food restaurant from the Philippines, that brings my family and friends great joy. It always feels like we are in the Philippines when we walk in, from the kind and friendly service to the Tagalog conversations circulating throughout the room. The seating area is not bad but it is usually packed, especially when there are bouts of people that come in and form a long line.
My favorite orders are the Chicken Joy (love it with warm, delicious gravy), spaghetti and palabok. The peach mango pies are good, but I was hoping to get a jackfruit banana pie (which wasn't available the past 6+ times I've visited).
The food is ready pretty quickly and they give you a buzzer to notify when your order is ready. In the summer time, I remember it being very hot and humid (since they do not have AC, only electric fans), but perhaps it is to resemble the tropical humid weather of the Philippines.
I normally don't subscript to fast food but I have to say, Jollibee's fried chickens are delicious. Super spicy (the way I like it), moisten and always taste like it's fresh off the fryer.
Came here twice and both time this place was packed. Seating are limited but it's definitely worth waiting for a seat because once the food is served, it's pipping hot and ooze with goodness and flavor.
Their chicken are really yummy. Only legs and thighs (no wings/breast) and you can request for it to be spicy or non-spicy. It also comes along with a side of gravy instead of ketchup to dip which is really fantastic.
Their food here is certainly home comfort food that is good for the soul but mighty bad for the heart (lol if you know what I mean). I wouldn't recommend to come here offend as the food is high in sodium and fat but if you do then just enjoy it for what it is!
Btw, their fried mango peach pie is a must! Flavor was so good that there was actually a party going on in my mouth.
Some may suspect that this particular writer penned this review (bestowing a stellar score, no less) upon this dining establishment due to a moral/ethnic obligation (to his homeland of the Philippines). Well, those suspicions wouldn't necessarily be inaccurate… this place is just another fast food joint after all… well, aside from the fact that this being a Filipino fast food "chain" (one of only three shops here in the East Coast; the only other ones being located in Virginia Beach, VA and Danforth, NJ).
What kind of fast food does this place dish out?? Well, interestingly enough, Jollibee channels the ingenuity and creativity of the people of the homeland, presenting itself as a jack-of-all-trades. What exactly do I mean by that??? Well, for the best explanation, I would suggest taking a gander at their menu online… but I suppose I can give a brief (winded) explanation.
For some Filipino flair, this place offers "fiesta" noodles; one of my personal favorite carb and cholesterol offerings (known as "palabok" to the locals) from the homeland… it consists of Bihon (rice) noodles, a "garlic sauce" (in reality, a shrimp sauce… but it would appear that garlic sauce sounds a hella lot more palatable to the western world… ::insert eye roll::), with shrimp, crushed pork cracklins, green onions, and sliced hard-boiled eggs. Not as good as mom's homecooking, but a surprisingly well done interpretation considering it comes from a fast food joint. Another super Filipino type dish can be found in the form of spaghetti topped with a super-sweet tomato sauce, heaps of cheese, and sausage (kinda weird, but something my people are huge on).
The place also (inexplicably) serves up some dishes that exude a Hawaiian flavor (at least that seems to be the goal)… what do you get when you stick a slice of pineapple and slap on a moniker featuring the word "aloha" into a burger? A Hawaiian-esque burger I suppose… how about sticking a piece of spam into a Hawaiian roll, sounds Hawaiian-ish yeah? Again, sure sounds super Hawaiian (he said facetiously). At least the price tag of the latter is relatively low, and having purchased a few in my lifetime, I can say that they make for a tasty snack.
For more traditional fast food fare, one can look to get the burgers and fries… and the fried chicken (which can be paired with the not-so-traditional side of white rice and super salty/tasty gravy). I gotta give credit, the fast food fried chicken is pretty bangin'. It's got a cheaper price tag than what you'd find at a KFC, and is super moist on the inside, and well seasoned and crispy on the outside. Definitely my go to selection when I find myself here; I should mention that the gravy, while super tasty, can get a tad too brackish if used too much (so apply sparingly on the chicken… or eat it by itself or w/ ketchup… either way is a completely acceptable mode of consumption).
All that being said, this particular location is located in a part of town with, perhaps, the most dense population of Pinoys in 4 (5) boroughs. Needless to say, the place is always packed… so keep a keen eye on seats to open up, use the bathroom beforehand (there is only one WC, that has only one [1!] toilet inside), and (if you find the native accent a bit difficult to listen to) I would bring a good pair of headphones and an appropriately pre-set music playlist on whatever music storage device you own.
I will leave you with that, so do what you will and give this place a try if you haven't already.
