I wish there was a restaurant like Maharlika in Philadelphia. With the popularity of other South East Asian cuisines, I am surprised there in not a nicer, modern Filipino place in our area. The Filipino restaurants in the Delaware Valley are Turo Turo style, which is basically pre-prepared, dishes behind a counter where the customers points and chooses which dishes they would like. This is similar to way Hardena/Waroeng Surabaya Restaurant operates.
Maharlika is a trendy space on 1st Avenue in the East Village. It reminds me a little of Same Same or Sate Kampar in Philly in decor. There is a bar on the right side when one enters and tables along the other side and in the back. The space is clean and the ventilation was excellent.
My wife is Filipino and with that written our server did a nice job explaining the concept, menu and customer favorites. There were four of us and we ordered 2 appetizers to start. One was the Pampangan-Style Sizzling Sisig with Egg -Hand chopped pork belly, cheek, and ears, & snout cooked 3 ways & set in sizzling skillet with sibuya, silli chilis, kalamansi, & egg served with garlic rice. This was really flavorful and rich. We also had a rock shrimp dish special that was spicy and excellent. For my main course,I had the Flip'D Chicken and Ube Waffle-Batter less fried chicken, purple yam waffle. compound anchovy-bagoong butter & caramelized macapuno syrup. I was really surprised how well all the flavors worked together. I loved this.
The service was spot on the entire night. The main courses can definitely be shared by 2 people. 4 solid yelp stars. I would give Mahalika 5 stars if they open a branch in Philadelphia!
Maharlika is the bomb! I haven't been exposed to much Filipino food aside from the basic staples, so this restaurant was a pleasant surprise.
On Sunday's only, Maharlika offers a family-style pre-fixe menu for $30pp. We had a group of 5, I don't remember the names of all the dishes we got, but there was more than enough food to feed probably 7-8 mouths. I believe the special provided 6 appetizers, 6 entrees, unlimited rice, and 2 desserts, all flavorful, unique, and delicious.
The staff is friendly and are very helpful. Seating may be a little limited, so reservations are strongly recommended.
On a recent visit I had the following:
-Imelda Eggs ("Laing" Eggs Benedict with Grilled Shrimp)
-Corned Beef with Garlic Fried Rice and Eggs
-Sampalok Drink
-Bibingka
Everything was very good and tasted authentic. I'd say my favorite item was the Bibingka – it's at the perfect moist and spongey texture and a blend of sweet and savory…arriving warm on a cast iron skillet made it even more amazing!
Yet another place that won't seat you unless your entire party is here, seriously, what's up with that New York?!
Came here for brunch and of course had to order the fried chicken and waffles that everyone gets here and I also ordered the longganisa.
Chicken didn't have batter, but was very crispy as if it did. The waffles were interesting and came with a weird caramel syrup that I'm not sure if I was a huge fan of. The waffles were a little sweet from the ube, but the texture was weird.
You can't really fuck up longganisa, so that was good. The garlic rice was just ok, nothing mind blowing.
I would come back, but wouldn't immediately think of this place
Filipino food with a modern twist. As someone who had unfortunately never tried Filipino food before, I was looking for something more traditional, but my half-Filipino friend recommended this place so we came here. The service was very attentive and the food was good! The kalamansi seltzer was to DIE for, and my friend got a seafood dish that looked fabulous – I'll have to get that the next time I'm here. I got the chicken noodle dish – very flavorful, and I'm looking forward to trying some of their other dishes next time.
This is a cute little filipino (or more like filipino inspired) restaurant in the east village. The food is great, with some dishes closer to authentic filipino cuisine, and some a little more fusion-y. Been here a couple of times and we have tried the pork adobo, sizzling sisg (pork and seafood), chicken and ube waffles and the special shrimp appetizer. All the food has been delicious! The chicken and waffles are a good fusion dish, and they serve it with a syrup and an anchovy butter that go really well with it. The pork adobo is good, seems closer to traditional pork adobo. The sisig is really good, with the pork one a lot better than the seafood. This dish is a must try if you come here!
The restaurant is really small but the ambiance is cozy and charming, with a bookshelf and Philippines inspired wall art. The servers are really helpful and friendly and will answer any of the questions you might have about the food.
This is definitely way better than pig and khao, from a service, food and ambiance perspective. The food at Maharlika is true to its roots while exploring new ideas.

It's Filipino cuisine with a twist! So don't come in here expecting strictly traditional Filipino flavors. Maharlika creates tasty renditions to classics like Palabok – by adding Uni (Sea Urchin) and Ube (purple yam) flavored waffles with fried chicken. Those are my recommendations right there, along with pork belly and Crispy "Pato" (Duck), which is usually a pork knuckle, but nothing is straight-traditional at Maharlika's
Although i can't recall exactly, i want to say that from appetizers to entrees prices, per dish, range from $10 to $18…
Give the Filipino beers a go too! You definitely can't go wrong with a San Miguel.
Overall, you know its been a good meal when you leave wanting to bring back your Filipino and non-Filipino friends!
Garlic rice!
Upon entering, we were warmly welcomed. All the employees here are super sweet, helpful, and patient. Our server was excellent. She explained the menu to us and had a great personality. The ambiance of this place is laid back. We arrived close to opening time and we were seated immediately. As it got closer to noon, every seat at the restaurant was taken. I'd suggest coming earlier on weekends if you want to be seated immediately.
I really enjoyed their homemade Kalamansi Seltzer. It was super refreshing on a hot day! The Lumping Barquillos was a wonderful way to start off our meal. It had a lovely crispy skin with a juicy meaty inside. I just love this stuff. We also tried the Tocilog w/ tocino and Flip'D Chicken and Ube Waffle. Both were excellent. Everything was fresh, full of flavor and cooked just right. The fried chicken had a super crisp skin and the meat was juicy within. The ube waffle was excellent and paired so well with the anchovy-bagoong butter & caramelized macapuno syrup. I loved the fresh thin slices of coconut found throughout the syrup. Sooo good! The Tocino, which was 7 Up cured pork tenderloin was also a hit. It came with garlic rice that had an egg on top. As well as relish on the side. The combination of sweet caramelized pork, garlic rice, egg, and slight tang from the vinegary relish was a party in my mouth.
We had such a great meal here. Don't forget to try the Jufran Banana Sauce (found at each table). It's good stuff!
