I stopped by for a quick dinner and was pleasantly surprised. A crop of bone broth soup kitchens have sprung up around the NYU campus recently and I have been meaning to try them all…starting here! I love the bright, warm atmosphere and the sleekness of the furniture. The menu is simple and focuses on their bone broths, which are prepared beforehand and stored in large thermoses on the countertop.
The 'spaghetti' and meatballs was the first thing that caught my eye. It consists of grass-fed beef meatballs atop a bed of zoodles (zucchini noodles), topped with pasta sauce, beef broth, and a bit of parmesan. For $11, I was disappointed with the serving size, but it was a feel-good, filling meal for what it was, and I was satisfied.
I definitely want to stop by for their paleo ice cream before the summer ends, and I can totally see myself stopping by here for some soup to warm my belly on a cooler day in the fall or winter!
Wandered in on a hot summer day during a workday lunch break. I decided to try their iced matcha latte. Everyone is SO NICE here. The sample of the berry vegan soft serve was tangy and surprisingly, the chocolate flavor was just bland. I prefer vegan ice cream elsewhere.
I tried the avocado-baked-egg the next time I visited, and it was delicious but literally just an egg inside an avocado for almost $8. The berry smoothie was good as well.
For the price and what it is (just a counter with a small area for seating, no restroom), I think Springbone is quite expensive. I really wanted to like it more, and hopefully they will keep improving! The staff really is phenomenal.
Though today is the grand opening, they're still not quite ready for prime time, with most menu items unavailable so far.
The main thing here is the Bone Broth, which they had available in two varieties: beef (or the "Bloody Bull", described as grass-fed beef broth Bloody Mary) and the one I tried, pork, also known as "Bacon N Eggs", which is a smoked pork broth poured over a raw egg. As far as drinking a cup of bone broth goes, it was pretty tasty (the only real frame of reference I have is Brodo), but definitely on the rich side from that egg, so the beef one might be a better introduction. They were turning away lots of people asking for a chicken broth, which they have 3 different flavors of.
As for the food items, all they had was the Avocado Toast ($4) and "You Just Said Egg" ($5), which is an egg frittata sandwich. Both of these were tiny and cold, so I think I need to make a return visit once the "Springbowls" become available, with stuff like Zucchini Spaghetti & Meatballs and Chicken & Rice, which sound a lot more promising.
They also just started serving the "The Port" ($12) as I was leaving, which is a burger with portobello mushroom caps for buns. The burger itself was super juicy, but on the whole, this thing was an absolute mess, between the spongy, saucy mushroom buns and the drippy caramelized onions topping the party. It seems like they plan to serve it one of those burger sleeves, but it's definitely more of a knife and fork affair.
I think a return visit is definitely in order once they are fully up and running, so I'll wait at least a week or so. Hopefully by then the bowls will be available, and more importantly, the soft serve ice cream, especially the Frozen Avocado Dark Chocolate flavor, which sounds especially intriguing.
