  1. Finally got to make it in. Was not disappointed. My daughter and I ordered edamame and the 8 wings with 3 legs in soy ginger marinade. Service was great, the edamame was not too salty and had a good "Pop".

The chicken was delicious. Crunchy and moist. The only complaint could be that they could have used a little more sauce but the waiter offered sauce so it can't be a real complaint.

Best fried chicken in the area for sure.

  2. Had the large combo soy garlic a few times now and it can feed two people well. I like the drumsticks the most because they're huge and I love dark meat. If you get combo it comes with wings and drumsticks. The wings are small and so are some of the drumsticks. The soy garlic is addicting and I've yet to ty the spicy. The order usually comes with two side dishes either cole slaw, daikon/radish, and I think I got kimchi before. The menu offers a bunch of other sides and other dishes besides chicken. Their pancake is tasty as well. Also, if you collect 8 coupons from the large orders they'll give you the 9th for free 😀 I take out but there is a dining area for those who want to dine in.

  3. Ok,

This place is… good & bad.

Good: Chicken wings, pretty effin tasty. Nice crunch, texture and all that jazz. If you're in the mood for some interesting/different wings – def. recommend in that regard.

Bad: I think the bathroom at 7/11 is cleaner. Srs.

I'm scared to see what the kitchen looks like.

It is a bit hard to recommend a place that has icky sticky tables and a very inattentive staff. But the wings are pretty damn good.

Why can't you just clean up… once in a while.

  4. Appetizers
    =========
    Mozarella sticks: B
Average.  Same breading as the onion rings and popcorn shrimp, so they're prolly frozen.

    Edamame: A-
Terrific!  Not overly salted the way you get it from many places.

    French Fries: C-
Obviously from a bag of frozen fries.  Not seasoned.  Not cooked well.  Freezer burn.

    Takoyaki: A-
I spent a year in Japan, and ate as many takoyaki balls as I could, and as god as my witness, this stacks up very favorably to *any* takoyaki I had in Japan (technically, takoyaki is a Japanese snack, not Korean).  The octopus is not overly chewy as it often can be here in the US.  The dough is light, fluffy, and moist.  The takoyaki is served under a bed of fish shavings.  I learned to love fish shavings in Japan.  They're kind of like Japanese popcorn…you can mindlessly eat them, and they're delicious.  Think of this dish as an octopus doughnut served under a bed of fish popcorn.  I promise, it's better than it sounds.

One criticism: takoyaki, unlike revenge, is a dish best served hot.  I wish Bon Chon served it a bit hotter.

    Hot Potstickers: C+
Obviously frozen.  Other than a small bit of heat, mostly tasteless.  How tasteless?  I ate 8 of these things and still don't know what the filling was.  Soy?  Meat?  Chicken?  Pork?  Hell if I know.  Bland, mealy.

French Fries & Onion Rings: B-
See my fries review.  Onion rings are tasty, but obviously from a bag of frozen food.

    Popcorn Shrimp & Onion: B
See my fries review.  The popcorn shrimp has the same colored breading as the onion rings and mozarella sticks, so while they're good, they're frozen food.

    Korean Scallion Pancake: A+
Some may think it's too oily.  I'd understand that.  For me, it's the best Korean scallion pancake I've ever eaten in my life.  It's the only restaurant food that I've considered adding an A++ rating to (but that's a slippery slope, so I'm going to keep it at A+).  Very soft, somewhat greasy, and loads of onions and scallions.  The onions have been cooked to perfection.  Perfectly caramelized without being burnt — this may be a fried chicken joint, but in my book, this is culinary wizardry.

    Chicken: A+
I give very, very few A+, but the chicken here deserves it.

You have three choices of meat: wing, drumsticks, or both ("combo").  It would be foolish to order anything but the "combo", since both wings and drums are terrific.

You also have two choices of flavor: spicy and soy garlic.   I prefer the soy garlic, since it's the more savory of the two.  The spicy is good too — it's a slow, background kind of heat.  Somewhat mild.  The problem is that some burns add to a dish in some way, e.g. the aroma, a secondary flavor like vinegary sourness (for example, Frank's hot sauce).  The hotness in the spicy wings is mild, but IMHO, doesn't add or complement the flavor.  OTOH, the soy garlic lends a background mild saltiness along with beautiful garlic and ginger overtones.

The chicken is extremely juicy and tender on the inside, crispy on the outside.  American fried chicken like KFC or Popeye's achieves juiciness by cooking under extreme pressure, and crispiness by frying lots of flour mix.  Korean fried chicken achieves both juiciness and extreme crispiness via the magic of double frying.  In addition to ginger overtones, there's also a very mild sweetness to the batter.  Normally I'm not fond of sweetness in my food, but it totally works here.  I'm addicted to this chicken!

Some Yelpers complain the Korean fried chicken of Bon Chon is too greasy or expensive.  To them I say, please be very gentle when you extricate your cranium from your dark orifice because you know not about what you speak.

    Seasoned Sausage: A-
By all rights, this should be an F.  The ingredients are: a chicken hotdog (yes, I'm dead serious, a *chicken* *hotdog*), caramelized onion, some kind of very mild chili pepper, chili oil.  You can almost picture this food being carried out on large trays at a Korean kids' summer camp.  Or perhaps dinner at a Korean prison.  But as god as my witness, what ought to be a culinary train wreck (I mean we're talking about chicken freaking hotdogs!) actually works.  I really enjoyed this!  A lot!   Despite having chilies and chili pepper oil in the ingredients, it's not spicy in the slightest.   I wouldn't blame you if you didn't believe me, and I wouldn't be offended if you tried it, hated it, and cursed me out for wasting your money.  Hey.  All I'm saying is that *I* loved it!  The balance between sweetness from the onions, the off-kilter flavors of a massively over-engineered artificial chicken hotdog and the chili flavors without the chili heat, works!  For me.  YMMV.

  5. I come here for their soy garlic chicken strips. They are delicious, but nothing out of the ordinary. Staff seems friendly every time I call to order for pick up.

  6. Was excited to finally try this place.  I walked in, it was dark and looked divey but the chicken is good, right?  We sat down and the waiter brought over the one page menu.   Mostly fried items but it's ok we came for fried chicken.  The waiter drops his tray when bringing us some items, just missed my foot.  Chicken comes and…..I was disappointed.  The crust was too thick.  Other Korean fried chicken I had before had.most less crust.  We ordered half & half so we got to taste both sauces which was good but the crust just throws it all off!  Will stick with Kyochon!!

  7. I literally live two blocks away from Bon Chon, which is why my BFF was in shock when I told her I've never been. Sure, it may be a chain restaurant AND a hole in the wall, but just thinking about their soy garlic chicken makes my mouth water. Forget ordering anything else. I just find it hilarious that everyone is complaining about them being greasy because first of all, it's not overly so. Secondly, it's fried chicken – what do you expect? The texture is crispy but not heavy. Personally, I prefer the wings and strips over the drumsticks. Comes with a side of lightly pickled daikon and some ginger dressing salad, too! Will come back again and again.

  8. I don't know about others but for me, I come here for the delicious chicken!

Not like the other places, I don't care about the service as long as they don't mess up my chicken. Really. That's all I ask and they have followed through

Delicious soy garlic and spicy chicken but I'm not too crazy about the other stuff. Occasionally I do grab the sweet potato fries but I wish they had a variety of dipping sauces…
