Let me start off by saying Paulette it is probably the best server in the place!and what a beautiful restaurant it is!hardwood throughout, old pics hanging of ownership and vaulted ceiling.. OK anyway onto the food which is what really counts,my favs are Fried calamari and Gorgonzola Bread, they are very popular for a reason My taste buds were very very happy,The filet mignon perfectly grilled to perfection, it's own juices load it with flavor, garlic mash were on point and drinks were potent w moderate prices, theres a reason this place has strived for many years in the heart of Island Park!look forward to next visit! Ps ONLY complaint was poorly made cappuccino, when I asked the manager to make one not as strong he told me there is nothing he can do about it because its made with push of a button… Poor answer ,in a fine dining establishment like this they should not be making cappuccino with the push of a button! That is All lol
I've been to Jimmy Hays twice and both times the experience there has been an eye gouging disappointment.
The first time i went there i had their cheapest steak (not so cheap). The steak was large, dry, and completely undesirable. The second time i went i had their most expensive steak (at $100). The steak was considerably better, but I would describe their sauce as movie butter flavored. The steak was good, but the sauce literally tasted like they had swung over to a movie theater and drenched the steak in the cheap butter they use for popcorn. It was depressing to say the least.
I will say that the service was excellent. The waiter was professional and behaved in a way in line with a fine dining locale. The appetizers were honestly to die for. If i went back i would just order several of their appetizers. We had the garlic bread, thick bacon, and another item… i believe it was a shrimp thing. They were all delicious and could have taken the place of the meal altogether.
It seems that i am in the minority when i say that I have had much better steak experiences in the past, but i wouldn't go there and pay their prices for their steak again. I wish things had been better.
It was just ok. Definitely would not put it in the caliber of the more notable and established steakhouses but for a neighborhood joint it's solid.
Started with their foie gras special. A bit too overly pan seared but the sautéed apples were a nice balanced touched. For Entrees ordered the boneless cowboy rib eye steak, potato gratin, sautéed string beans and the petite filet mignon. Both steaks were not cooked to what was requested so had to be taken back. Wished the cowboy steak was on the bone but beggars cant be choosers…
Our waitress was really nice and accommodating. So was the rest of the serving staff and even the valet. Solid place to go if you're in the neighborhood, but not a place to go out of your way for.
Gorgonzola bread…you should probably just start saying that to the waiter before you even get to the table. If you enjoy garlic and cheese, you won't be disappointed!
Service is great, food is excellent and ambiance is very comfortable. If your out on Long Island its worth the stop!
Came here expecting great things.
First impression, waited for the valet…and waited. Eventually gave up and had to park my vehicle in their valet lot my self.
We went inside with our reservation.
We ordered, both steaks medium, they came pretty much well done.
We never got steak knives, we had to eat dinner with butter knives.
The onions rings I was super excited about, were very disappointing.
Another one and done…sadly.
I have absolutely no clue what the negative reviews are about at all. I ate here with a large group last night and this was the best meal i ate in the last 5 years…and this includes Peter Luger's and most restaurants in RVC.
My Beef Wellington was so good that i would eat it every night and never get sick of it. I am enjoying the food coma and i still am in now. The chowder was incredible, the service was funny, attentive and professional. Even the coffee tasted better than normal coffee.
Before the meal we sat at the bar for an hour and talked to a real cool bartender who took care of us attentively and was very social.
I cannot speak to the valet as I parked on the side street and did not use them as there was plenty of parking at 5:15 on a weeknight.
I highly recommend this establishment. Thank you Jimmy Hays!
An all around solid steakhouse that has been around for decades. Classy old school vibe has you feeling like your eating in the grand dining room from The Shining (minus the ghouls).
Service is excellent. Bow ties and all.
Gorgonzola garlic bread is an awesome app, and raw bar tower is reasonably priced.
Porterhouse for 2 is a generous cut of meat, and includes house salad, two sides, and some damn good onion rings. Not bad for $102.
Never overly crowded, never rushed by servers.
Couple of small negatives:
Lobster bisque I'd pass on. A $12 bowl of soup with not so much as one solid piece of lobster floating around.
They force you to valet, even if the lot is empty. Not that I really care, but the lot is literally 5 steps away…this isn't the city. I guess they feel it adds to the experience.
Bottom line, expect a good meal.
Bring your wallet, and your appetite.
We went to Jimmy Hays on a quiet Tuesday night with absolutely no expectations. I knew it was an old time steakhouse but had no other information about the place.
The restaurant is very attractive with dark, rich looking wood paneling and white tablecloths. My drink was strong and as I looked through the menu I said to myself that the food better be good because the prices were actually higher than the "name" steakhouses. ($48 and up for most of the steaks) Well, surprise, the food was excellent. A little quirky actually but better than most of the "names" that I frequent both on Long Island and in the city. Had my fillet mignon (served with crabmeat and a wine sauce) not been slightly overcooked it would have been among the best dishes I've had in a long time. One last comment – the french fries (included with the dinner) were great – best I've had in years.
