First things first, all, allow me to address the 'blasphemy' of putting 'Philadelphia' in the name of this joint to some reviewers. It's not that big of a deal. Philadelphia didn't come up with the idea of cheese and meat on bread. It just DIDN'T. The Hot Dog as we know it, was invented in Brooklyn. We don't try to call it the Brooklyn Hot Dog. Get over yourselves, really.
I've read the not-so-hot reviews for Philadelphia Grille and I completely understand where they're coming from, but I still like this spot. Yeah, it's not the greatest cheesesteak you'll find in Brooklyn and yes, it's probably overpriced for what you're getting at $9.75. That's pretty unlike the real Philadelphia experience , where you're getting behemoth cheesesteaks for a few bucks less. My favorite spot for a cheesesteak is still Shorty's in Manhattan (Flatiron), where it's $12 for a significantly larger sammich. Philadelphia Grille also a strictly to-go establishment, with two very cramped seats in the front, but I don't think that's a major deterrent from checking them out. Lets focus on the positive :
-It's still one of the better cheese steaks you are getting in Brooklyn. Often times theres a line, and for good reason.
-If you don't want one of their PCS options, you can go with pizza. It's pretty standard Brooklyn pizza.
-The bread they get is fantastic.
-It's right off the Belt, so pick-ups are a breeze.
Other than that, it could use some work. When we order pick-up, you'll get there 20 minutes later and that's when they start up with your order on the grill, despite the place being empty and no orders queued up; its almost as if they don't trust we'll show up, which really negates the whole point of taking an order on the phone. The quality of the bread is spot on, but the meat could use some work in the quality and quantity department; the fact that its frozen doesn't help and I find that it relies too much on the cheese for that sacred moisture effect. And if they're going to keep on charging at the $10 mark, it would help to make the cheesesteak larger. But will I still come back time to time? Yes, I don't see a reason not to. I won't make it a point necessarily but the mood seems to strike about once a year on average, so I'll be back.
Philly Grille has the most solid cheesesteaks in Brooklyn. Unassuming location but their food is off the chain. It's a legendary Bay Ridge staple.
A friend of mine called to compliment the pizza cheesesteak and the man who answered the phone responded, "House specialty, boss." Words cannot express how legit this place really is.
