At Asian Gourmet, you'll find a fusion of Chinese, Thai, Malay, Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine all wrapped up in one menu. It's nice to have a wide selection and a variety of palette pleaser to choose from…but as with most fusion restaurants, the downsides of having so many options usually mean that either they do not have any specialty or the recreations are not nearly as good as the originals. The portions are small, especially for take-outs, and the price is slightly overpriced.
Wow, I am shocked and disappointed to give such a low rating to this Asian spot in Flushing. Im usually in this area once a month to follow up on medical appts with my mommy at the hospital across the street. This was the first time I was in the area during lunch time and decided to grab a bite to eat. I checked Yelp of course and the reviews were great. When I walked in the small but cute restaurant, it was packed with sit down diners and people waiting for takeout.
I decided on the pineapple fried rice with chicken which was sooo bland and the rice seemed very overcooked. I was extremely shocked at the taste because this is one of my favorite dishes. I was disappointed because you get such a large portion and I initially said, "oooh I can have seconds later" but boy was I wrong. I am thinking this place had a bad day because the place was bustling with customers and so they're making some good food somewhere in the back. 🙂 They also might have been short staffed because I waited way too long for my meal. The cashier apologized for the wait and I wouldnt have minded if my food tasted just a lil better. I also ordered a blueberry bubble tea that wasnt tasty either, very watered down. But that could've been because it was idly sitting for almost 30 minutes while I waited for my food. :-(. I will be fair and give this place another shot but for now its "Meh. I've experienced better."
I am instinctively wary of fusion restaurants. Like most diners, with their menus filled with pages upon pages of entrees, I think it near impossible for any one kitchen to consistently turn out quality dishes, especially when there is such an enormous variety of cuisines. Asian Gourmet makes a valiant attempt at tackling Japanese, Thai, Viet, Malaysian, Chinese, and Italian (or what is labeled the 'vermicelli' section in their menu) – all under one roof. It would seem that anyone who takes on too much (culinarily or non) will do a mediocre job of everything, and that's certainly the case here.
The sushi is standard – neither terrible nor great, and inconsistent saltiness has been an issue with dishes like the primavera vermicelli. One order was perfectly seasoned and wonderful, so much so that I ordered it again the next two times, only to nearly baptize my tongue in a salt bath both times. Even requesting less salt when ordering did nothing to help me recreate the yum of the first time. Giving it another chance, I ordered the pad thai another time, finding it perfectly middle of the road – a little sweet and the noodles dry. Normally, that would be enough to keep me away for good, except that I've found the one gem on the menu that has remained perfect every single time – the curry tofu string beans. There is so little in that dish that I can critique that it has carved out a special space within my stomach's storehouse of cravings. To wit, I have ordered it no less than ten times in the past two months. A simple dish listed under the Malaysian menu, it is a standard yellow curry with a hint of spice that comes with large, stir-fried blocks of tofu and perfectly tender green beans. With a bowl of rice, it is the perfect meal, with a decent serving size that brings me just beyond the point of fullness. To me, it is the sole saving grace of an otherwise unexceptional eatery. What surprises me is that in all the times I've ordered it, it is exactly as I have craved and remembered, unlike other dishes that falter under inconsistent cooking and seasoning. I am hard pressed to recommend this place, knowing that there is really only one dish that I can heartily approve, but I suppose the diverse menu might appeal to someone who is looking for variety, even at the risk of slight inauthenticities in tastes and flavors. There is also an extensive bubble tea and fruit/veggie smoothie menu for those who are looking for fun beverages.
Service here is quiet, efficient, and neither friendly nor unkind. Since it is located near the hospital, meter parking can be difficult but I have recently spotted signs in the restaurant inviting patrons to make use of their private parking lot in the rear (I haven't seen it yet, but apparently there is one).
Unsure of what to eat for lunch, my coworker and I decided to grab a bite here.
They offer lunch specials so we decided to go with the mango shrimp with beef fried rice for me and the mango chicken with shrimp fried rice for her. Normally the dishes come with white rice, but we wanted fried rice which was a $3 up-charge.
As I'm digging into my dish I realize after two bites that Asian Gourmet does not believe in cleanliness. They only deveined part of the shrimp, but towards to tail the vein was still intact. My stomach began to ache almost immediately.
I called over a busboy to get the attention of our waitress who seem to have disappeared. I informed him that the shrimp were not cleaned properly. As I held it up and pointed to what I was talking about he examined it and said, "no, no all of our shrimp clean". I looked at him with a look of disgust and said, "you can take this back because I don't want it. I'll have the curry chicken with beef fried rice to go".
One star for being unapologetic and serving unclean shrimp.
why 2 stars? it's not because of their food but because of their outrageous overly priced items…
i do have to say their food is very tasty and on point. it's very pleasing to the palate but their prices are RIDICULOUS. a normal portion of rice and beef cubes are $20…
an order of chicken and beef satay, 4 little pieces for $7…
the only thing that my bf and i come here now are slushies even though they're a bit ovepriced themselves too… but it's really refreshing. i always get their passion fruit slush. i've tried almost all their slushies before, yogurt, mango, sesame etc. they're all really good and not watered down. i believe the last time my bf and i got slushies here, they were $3.50 for a 16 oz cup.
i wish they priced their foods better so my bf and i would come back…
The lunch deals are such a steal here and service was super polite! I don't know if the chef was having an off day in regards to a previous review on the pineapple fried rice but mine was delicious today. And such big portions too! Everything tasted great and was fresh, not overcooked. Tennis themed cozy restaurant. Definitely recommend coming here again especially if you need a quick meal on the go.
The food here is amazing! I first discovered it a year ago prior to my "Yelp" days lol But recently have come here again and the food is still excellent! The menu is pretty large too and the service is very fast and pleasant. The place is pretty small so you might walk right past it and not even realize. But do yourself a favor and if you're ever in the area or are at the hospital across the street- stop in here! You won't be disappointed. The portions are also very big so you get what you pay for 🙂 I only give the 5 star rating if I feel the food is amazing so I gave it the 5 star rating here- go check it out!
I honestly don't understand why anyone would go here more than once.
I'll keep this one short. I came here to eat while visiting my father in the hospital. I ordered some sesame chicken and a bubble tea. The chicken was awful and the bubble tea was even worse. The girl who attended me looked on me as if I was inconveniencing her day. Not sure what the appeal here is if any.
My experience here was just shy of awful, but if you want to take a chance, go ahead. I honestly hope that I just went on an off day.
