Great experience here and great bagels. Going on a weekday at 10AM, there was basically no line inside the store. You walk all the way to the back and peer over the counter to decide which of their bagels you want. The staff on this occasion was super friendly, very accommodating, and helpful. After placing my order, I watched the guy get the bagels and prepare them with cream cheese. He definitely seemed to take care in spreading the cream cheese over the bagel evenly and something about his preparation struck me as that he cared about what he was making. Maybe because it wasn't that busy, but I was impressed. They have muffins and other pastries, and I can speak from experience that the muffins are great.
The bagels were delicious. They had a good moist, fluffy texture with slightly crisp outside. The everything bagel was slightly different with a mildly onion taste (as opposed to the salt taste of most places). It was kind of different, but in a good way. All of their bagels have a slightly sweet finish to them as well. Making things more confusing, however, is the HUGE spread of spreads!! I counted 16 of JUST cream cheeses, with the many of them being of the lite/low-cal variety. This is great as they have likely realized that people in NYC are ok shoving huge pucks of carbs into their mouths as long as they can get a Lite cream cheese, haha! And they definitely load up the schmear on the bagel, nothing light about the amount!
The interior is large and they have a decent number of tables lining the displays near the entrance. They have a large refrigerator with tons of different beverage options. It looks like a very clean place and has a great staff and great product.
BAGEL SCORE: 4/5. Great bagel. Good size with TONS of cream cheese options. Good texture of the bagel as they are not too dry or hard and have a good chew to them. The bagels have a mild sweet finish and the everything bagel leans towards an onion flavor over a salty flavor. With tons of cream cheese options, you are set for a bagel treat here any way you want to mix it!
This was my first New York bagel shop. I was close to the area and wanted something quick. I decided to try their specialty bagel with salmon, eggs, and cream cheese. For some reason I was imagining the standard lox with cream cheese but it ended up being a cooked bagel. It was pretty good but not what I was expecting so I was kind of disappointed. My boyfriend had a different bagel with spinach, egg, and cheese which was also pretty good. Even though it was overall pretty good and inexpensive, honestly I probably wouldn't come back for food. Also, their set up to order and pick up food is very disorganized and got kind of confusing when people were rushing the line in order to get ahead.
This place has the best lox bagel I have ever had. I got the everything bagel with cream cheese, onions, tomatoes and a huge amount of lox. It costs around $9.95, the tomato is extra $.75 but it's worth every penny. They have a lot of different kinds of cream cheese, I recommend trying the jalapeño one.
I also got a small iced coffee ($2.25), it wasn't anything special but they have the choice of getting almond milk, which I prefer.
Totally recommend this place for some bagels and coffee in the morning or anytime of the day.
+ dirt cheap large coffee, I think it was like $2.00?
+ close to museums like the Met, so a good place to nab something quick!
+ good bagels and the cream cheese selection looks good!
-long line, very few seating even in not peak hours…forget about coming during peak hours!
– if you get anything with eggs…that actually means they will cook it with the egg, it does NOT mean you get a sunny side up egg added to your bagel. My friend wasted perfectly good smoked salmon that she assumed would be raw or smoked, but came sauteed in with her eggs…waste of $$
– I got my bagel with egg and bell peppers…it had zero, i mean not a single flake of seasoning on it. I also thought they would be paired separately, but it was all cooked into one tasteless thing yellow blob that just felt like unseasoned breakfast, sad face 🙁
We had bagels for breakfast two days in a row…. SO New York. I'm not too sure what I had the first day since I had my boyfriend's sister order me her usual. All I know it had sun dried tomato in it. However, the second time around I ordered a sesame bagel with tomato slices and scallion cream cheese. The bagel was toasted just right and the cream cheese and tomato went really well together. I've never had tomato with cream cheese before so I was a little skeptical. Their bottled fresh squeezed OJ was subtle and sweet. Their iced coffee is made just right when you request for it to be made with cream and sugar. I couldn't decide which drink I liked better with my meal.
The line can get long but it moves really fast! Very limited seating so it's best to take on the go.
When visiting New York I become a Bagel addict.
It's not something that we really get in Australia where I'm from, so I make the most of the opportunity when in the big apple.
Being a Seinfeld fan i had to visit all the Seinfeld spots when I first visited NYC back in 2003.
On that list of course was H & H bagels after Kramer worked there in the Upper West side store on Broadway & 80th.
Sadly this outlet is no longer open as the company closed it's original two stores in 2012.
(If you're a H & H fan it's worth checking out on Wiki to see what happened)
I'm thankful you can still find the H & H greatness located on the Upper East side & it's well worth the visit.
I have to admit it was a TV show that got me in the door the first time, but it's a greatness of their bagels that has me returning trip after trip. They are the BEST I've ever had, no word of a lie.
My favourite Bagel has to be the "Everything Bagel" whether you have it loaded with lox & cream cheese, or just cream cheese, or have it plain, it doesn't matter – it's great!
Fresh & plump bagels are the bomb! Sometimes even still warm, as the turn over is great.
Another favourite is the sesame seed bagel toasted with peanut butter. There's something about this combination that makes it just right. My friend & I shared one of these, & the oozing peanut butter dripped down our fingers, making it a messy, but yummy eat. I'm quite sure there was so much peanut butter that my daily intake of calories were there in that one bagel, so I was fortunate I had my buddy with me to share.
Of course this means I can order more bagels to try, really you can't go wrong here with their selection, & quality.
I think on my next visit I might even bring my stash of Vegemite with me & have a cheese bagel toasted with butter, & pop some vegemite on. I've had that at Bagel shops in Australia, & it's a wicked combination, so I can only imagine just how good it'd be on the best Bagel in New York City.
There's a little seating in the store, so you can enjoy your bagel while it's warm & freshly toasted, or why not take a short walk over to Central Park & do your bagel & eating while people watching in the heart of NYC.
The absolute best bagel in NYC and I'm not just saying this because it was only a few blocks from my old apartment.
Service is great – they're always so nice!
Lines can get pretty long, especially on the weekend but it is soo worth the wait!
My go to order:
– everything bagel toasted with light jalapeño cream cheese. Bomb dot com! If you catch them right when the bagels are freshly out of the oven, even better!
– medium iced coffee. Nothing fancy but does the job!
If you're in the area, definitely pay h&h a visit!
I go back every time I'm in NYC!
i feel cheated . . . i've been in NYC for almost five years and I am just now trying H&H bagels. what a shame.
this place is everything. go. order as many bagels as you think you will consume for an entire week. because unless you live nearby, you're SOL.
from one carb lover to many, i'm assuming, others. go to H&H and thank the heavens that you were blessed to experience such perfection.
