Hands down this is the best place for desi food in Jersey! Lately my parents and I come here for brunch whenever my parents want desi food that we don't cook at home.
For brunch there is an appetizer section as well as a brunch section. For appetizers there is chicken soup, papari chaat, and dhai bare.
The brunch table has lunch/ dinner dishes as well as some yummy breakfast dishes such as chana chat and aloo ki buhjiya paired with puris (fried dough).
Lastly for dessert there is rice pudding (kheer), jello, and gulab jaman (a type of sweet). For tea there is Kashmiri chai or regular chai.
I cannot tell you how many valimas I've been to at this location. The kashmiri chai and the rasmalai make this place my #1 spot in Edison. The venue is pleasant inside. The outside does look a bit rachet, they could spruce it up a bit more on the outside, add some more bushes, maybe a water fountain, some nice lighting, it's quite plain out there. Other than that, this place holds a lot of memories, many pleasant ones. The owners and management are extremely pleasant and very accomodating. The food is great and the service is on point. There are always hiccups here and there but it's not any different at other venues.
Food: really good
Service: really good
Ambience: so so
This is my favorite Pakistani/Indian dinning place around Edison. I have been here numerous times. This is my family's go to place. I have had them cater my mom's birthday. Every time I have been satisfied.
The servers are polite and friendly. The place does not seem like much from the outside and the inside is clean but no clear theme. Having said that you do not go to Shalimar for the ambience you go there for the food. The food here is really good some of my favorites are Haleem, chicken Kat-a-Kat, goat karahi and chicken jal farazee. Another plus is that they serve you in real plates not paper ones like most of the places in the area.
Overall if you want good Pakistani food Shalimar is the place to go.
Important note–this Muslim place does not allow alcohol. I respect their view, but diners should be aware.
Food is ok, but not as good as Khyber Grill or Rasoi.
Good service.
We went back for the weekend buffet and it was fantastic. There were at least 15-20 different veg and non veg options and, while I'm a carnivore on most days that end in Y, I had to make an exception for the excellent vegetarian options that they had. As is true for most IndoPak buffets, nothing is healthy, and everything is delicious. They also have some traditional options that are not really seen in your average buffet like nihari, which is a soup made from the bones and bone marrows of goat and beef and Haleem which is a meat paste with lentils and spices. Highly recommend this place for both the adventurous and not so adventurous eater.
