So, so psyched about this one you guys.
My husband and I are not really a food match. We just go crazy for different things. It's a real pain in the rear. So whenever I ask to get Chinese food for dinner, he says no. Says he doesn't like it. Says it's gross.
I read about Wuji this past week and talked to the man I married about it. Yes, it was Chinese food. But it was farm to table, so that makes it different, right? RIGHT. He agreed without any hesitation to try it out.
The moral of this story is we both really, really liked it.
Here's what happened. We pulled up and there were fire towers out front, which was pretty cool. I am the world's biggest sucker for stuff like that. I mean it's almost embarrassing. Anyway, now I am even more excited. We head in and it's pretty nice inside. The way it's decorated if fresh and modern, new and classy. Definitely an upscale feel.
Our waiter, Luke was crazy energetic and so excited about the restaurant and the menu, which made me all jazzed about it, too. I ordered the pear ginger iced tea which is absolutely delicious and has a beautiful presentation. It comes in it's own little pitcher and stuff and you should really head over there and ask Luke to make you one. It's his favorite drink to make!
For dinner, we figured might as well dive in and order a few things to check out.
Here is a list, in no particular order.
1. Fresh Crab Rangoon (sweet & spicy mandarin sauce) – Good! Not oily at all, good crunch and the filling tasted like real crab without being "fishy". Good filling to wrapper ratio.
2. Bao Bao Buns (berkshire pork, daikon & house made pickles) – This one is hard to talk about. All the components were really tasty, but it was too much pickles, watercress, whatever with the pork. If I were to revamp these a little, I would only do one small piece of veggie in there with the pork and let the pork stand out and speak up. Good dish though! We just took it apart a little to make it just right for us.
3. Pan Seared Pork Dumplings (cabbage, water chestnuts) – Delish! I don't know where the water chestnuts are in this dish, but whatever. Still great. Pretty oily though, I think next time I will have the steamed. It's a nice big order of them too, so good for sharing.
4. Black Pepper Beef (wok tossed rib eye, mushroom, onions) – I loved this. I am most impressed with how well the beef was cooked. Really perfect. The sauce sort of pooled at the bottom, so make sure you scoop it up! Because it's too good to go to waste.
5. Spicy Fried Rice (sunnyside egg, crispy shallots) – This was spicy but very tasty! I wish the egg had been a bit more runny, but that's obviously personal preference. This was great under our black pepper beef. This is a hugeeeee side dish, and we really went to town and still had plenty left over to take home.
At the end, they bring you a massive thing of Green Apple Cotton Candy to munch on with your check. It was fresh and good!
The prices are not low, but I guess for fresh food you always pay up.
I'm happy to have such a nice place so close to home in Westchester…there are not many awesome sauce dinner options in lower Westchester that are not Italian food, so this is a happy addition to Scarsdale.
Check it out! Worth the bill.
I love, love Chinese food, but hate that after self loathing of feeling stuffed, with overly greasy and unhealthy food. Enter Wuji, an all natural, organic when they can, Chinese restaurant. When I read about this place in westchester mag, I knew I just had to try it out. We came for dinner on a Friday night and the place was packed. We waited a few minutes at the bar and then were seated. We ordered Spare Ribs, calamari salad, lobster, black pepper steak and fried rice. Everything was really delicious. I think the spare ribs were some of the best I've ever had. I love this concept and idea and hope this place stays open forever. Chinese food done right!
Ordered delivery from Wuji and really enjoyed it! The price, however, was not as nice. We ordered just enough food for 4 people and it came to $80. Portion sizes were on the small side, although you do get what you pay for… tasty, organic, authentically prepared food. We had a hard time deciding between their 3 types of dumplings but settled on wok-fried pork dumplings, which were great! The Peking duck mu shu was a flavorful treat, and the black pepper beef with vegetables was tasty too. The cold peanut noodles were slightly under-seasoned, but the blackened garlic string beans made up for that in spades. Overall, a terrific meal from a cool new place!
Please invest in small spoons!
I recently went there eager to try and and a 7:30 high table was the only thing available on a Saturday night. Firstly, I'm used to Chinese people at a Chinese restaurant, but you will only find one in the kitchen.
The decor is modern and inviting. The service is ok, no real complaints. I ordered a few dumplings which were very good, the shrimp, pork, and veggie. You should ask for the hot sauce other than the bottle stuff they give you, the chili oil is quite good.
One issue I had is that they gave regular size spoons with the sauces…come on! It's a no brainier to give small ones with sauces.
The chicken dish I ordered came out look warm. The server didn't offer to do much about it. I also got the half Peking Duck which was just ok, the cut wasn't normal for duck so you had skin separate from the meat which is not well balanced. You also need a decent amount of fat which I didn't see.
All in all a decent place for people who don't know too much about Chinese food. it does what it's supposed to in Scarsdale but I wouldn't say it's authentic. The thing I did like is that it's fresher than other Chinese places.
