Wolfgang’s Steakhouse

“I'd have to say, this place is better than Peter Luger's. Came in last night for my friend's birthday dinner.”

“creamed spinach was also great – not too watery, not overpoweringly thick – both sides i thought were a great compliment to a phenomenal steak.”

“The crowd was a mix of business and tourists (i.e., Times Square), and the tables were probably 2/3 full at 6:30 PM.”

  1. FOO! (That's Russian for: yuck!)

I don't know if it's just this location but I went to Wolfgang's for dinner and was far from impressed.

    It's loud and crowded.
Service was lacking: waiter didn't introduce himself, didn't explain anything, and was barely around.
The caesar salad was overloaded with salt and cheese (and this coming from a salt and cheese lover).
The filet mignon was just ok. The peppercorn sauce it came with was just awful.
As for sides: the "steamed" asparagus was huge stalks of asparagus thrown on a plate, the home fries were overdone and tasted like arsenic, the mashed potatoes were UNDERdone, and I didn't even dare touch the creamed spinach.
Even the creme brulee was off.

And, obviously, this place is not cheap. Pass.

  2. For a premier branded steakhouse operating in one of the most competitive market for restaurants, this Wolfgang location needs some extra curriculum help…and need it fast.   Situated in the armpit of tourist district, most of the true New Yorkers would rather go else where than to venture there.  However, their Porterhouse and Ribeyes are very good and well aged.  But that's where the virtues of my review stops.  My biggest complaint is the service: at nearly $200/per person the waitstaff didn't bring their "A" game.  There are only three establishments in NY where you can dish out attitude and get away with it:
    – Soup Nazi (if he's still around)
    – Deli Counter of Katz Deli
    – Peter Lugers Brooklyn Location

I can't stand attitudes when my glass has been sitting empty for a while, I'm out of sparkling water and I asked for them to bring me another.  I also can't stand completely idiotic process: dropped plates, crashes, broken glasses occurring 10 feet from us.  It was utterly amateur hour.  Please be pleasant it doesn't cost the restaurant a penny.

If this was my establishment, heads will roll.  I have been to their Beverly Hills location which was excellent and this location is an embarrassment.

Oh if the management is reading this, you may want to fix that piece of wood plank sticking up in the middle of the floor in front of the bar…it is a trip hazard and we live in a litigious society.

  3. Just like the majority of the reviews about this place, my experience here was also nothing short of mediocre. Don't get me wrong, the food itself was great, but the horrible service wasn't something that one would experience at a "fancy" restaurant. Or any restaurant for that matter.

I settled for the New York Strip Sirloin done medium rare. My waiter even placed the pieces of steak on my plate without me asking. He even drizzled sauce on top for me. But when my friend wanted to place a last minute order, our waiter quickly slammed the spoons down and sighed in disbelief. I believe his name was Bob. I understand that my friend was indecisive and ordered at 11:30 when closing time was 12 midnight, but customer's priorities should always be paramount and I felt like the waiters didn't express that today. Not to mention he dropped a glass Coke bottle on my foot while serving our table and he didn't even have the audacity to issue an apology.

Other than the unsatisfactory service, the food was flavorful and delicious. We ordered the lobster bisque soup, crab cakes, steak fries and bacon. All the dishes received good feedback. My only complaint about the food was that the bread that was served was cold , stale and hard.

Would I be returning? Sure. But maybe to a different venue. I was originally going to go to the Park Avenue location but they close at 11.

  4. Entertained clients here during a recent business trip to NYC.  It was the first time I had been to this restaurant and I was very impressed.

The service was just right.  Attentive but not too pushy.

The wine was delicious – had a few bottled of a Malbec which went down very well!

The food was equally great.  The bacon chops and crab cakes were great starters.  I had the rib eye for my main and it was lovely – however be warned… the steaks are massive (and this comes from a man who loves big steaks!).

All in all, definitely one of the steak restaurants to try if you are ever in Manhattan.

  5. Ambience: Fancy and upscale.  We sat at the bar so did not have a chance to check out the whole place.

Service: Bartender was friendly, professional and attentive.

Food: We had the porterhouse steak for two with mashed potatoes and spinach. The steak was so, so good!  The mashed potatoes were good, not amazing.  The spinach had a lot of garlic just the way I like it. The steak is so large that you will most likely need to take some home.  The next day we chopped it up into small pieces and made steak and eggs for breakfast; super yumm.

Although I am aware that some people did not have a good experience, specially in the customer service area, I guess my experience was different because we sat at the bar.

I would not object to retuning.

  6. Solid restaurant. The food is good, the space is functional, however the service really could be better.

Let me start with the food. The bacon is amazing. I personally like it chopped up on a Cesar salad, however it's great on it's own as well. The steak is also great, but I have one issue. Part of the whole experience is getting the steak on a scalding plate with all the juices from the steak to 're-apply' to the meat. This is great, but the plate is so damn hot, that it can turn a rare steak into a medium rare steak. For someone that likes a cool, red, center, this results in a warm center. However, can't really complain too much, the steak is really top quality.

The service is lacking a little. A lot of experiences here involve trying to flag down a waiter, or having to ask a second time for a drink. Not a huge deal, and the servers are very polite, however for the prices, I would expect better – simple as that.

Overall, I would recommend this place if you're in the area. But, if you're just looking for a steakhouse in NYC, there's some places I would place above – even at the same price point.

  7. We came here for lunch on a Thursday. The dining room was classy and service was good. We ordered

    – rib eye steak: it came with creamed spinach and smash potato. I ordered it medium rare and the steak was grilled to perfection with crust.

    – Chilean sea bass: my dining companion ordered this and it felt like it's been frozen. It tasted fishy and bland. There wasn't any of the typical fatty fish taste from Chilean sea bass.

  8. You are smacked in the face with an amazing steakhouse smell as soon as you walk in. I died and went to heaven. We all enjoyed our meals and our steaks came out perfectly. Our service was not bad at all so don't get me wrong there, but for the price you are paying to eat I did expect a more upbeat vibe, with recommendations and assistance as we looked at a wine list. We were left to simply do our thing. Came and took our order and that was about it. Beautiful establishment and great food!
