I did not live very close to Iavarone's, but it was close to the office I worked at. So I usually didn't buy groceries, but came for the hot food at lunch. There is usually a large selection, so there is just about something for everyone. My favorite dish was the lasagna and my favorite sandwich was the chicken parm. There is just something in their sauce… it's delicious! Like many other places in Maspeth, it has a real old skool New York feel.
I do wish I could afford to shop here more often, but when I do stop by I always get their frozen ravioli. I'm a fan of their lobster, crab, cheese, and especially their mushroom varieties. I'd avoid the meat ravioli though, it's very bland and tastes like unseasoned ground beef.
The staff is always friendly and helpful. The space is quite tiny and doesn't really allow you to browse, especially when it gets crowded.
Oh mommy is this place good. I used to come here all the time for lunch since I used to work in Middle Village. So this place consists of two sections: first section is a deli section where they have a vast array of Italian cold cuts for sandwiches and by the pound. And then there is a food by the pound section ranging from the rice balls, to chicken parm, to pasta salad, to everything you can thing of. The second section, on the left side, is a butcher and seafood section where you could get steaks and some seafood like fish and shellfish. This is a to go place only and it's nice that you will always see a ton of cops here. P.S- for sandwiches, you hand pick the bread from the bread section and you hand it to a cutter and he preps the sandwich for you. Overall, I prefer the rolls since I like softer breads. The long hero breads are good but I don't like the feeling that I am fighting my sandwich to win a bite. Lol
The food:
The Upper Crust- Top round roast beef with sliced Portobello Mushrooms, Baby Arugula & red onions w/ horseradish aioli. I really love this sandwich, the roast beef is made well, it's seasoned nicely then the mushrooms, which are marinated, pair really well with the roast beef and the arugula. The horseradish aioli provides a nice creaminess, it's basically a garlic mayo and it's so good. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
The Godfather- Boar's Head Ham, Genoa Salami, Pepperoni, Mortadella, Zampino, Provolone, Vinegar Peppers, lettuce, tomato & vinaigrette. This is kinda the quintessential Italian cold cut hero, it really has everything. I think the vinaigrette really elevates all the ingredients, the cold cuts alone are really good but with the vinaigrette it makes it really good. Oddly enough, taking out the lettuce made the sandwich much better. yelp.com/user_local_phot…
However one thing I forgot to add is that you can order specialty cut meats. My father orders porter house steaks sometimes and requests for the cut to be 2-3 inches thick! And they bring out the whole SLAB and ask my father to measure for them how big he wants the steak and they cut it for him!
