  1. Let me get someting out right off the bat: From what I could tell, the food was solid. I went with just a burger and fries, but the dessert case looked wonderful! The atmosphere was nice and relaxed, mostly quiet. I liked the place, but I could have liked it a lot more.

First of all, I don't think they have any idea what "medium" means here. My burger was brown throughout. I still liked it well enough, but I know I'd have liked it a lot more if it had been cooked like I asked. The other major drawback was that, while the staff was quite friendly (this was mid-afternoon, but I hear lousy things about the late night staff) they were very slow. I had to take my food to go and run out partway through eating because it had taken an unexpectedly long time.

Oh well. The food is solid, but if you're very picky or in a hurry, skip it.

  2. Ehhhh we were the only ones in place and our food took over 30 min. All we ordered was soup and egg dishes! And my soup came dead last. Were they soaking yellow split peas in the back?  I bet they make most money when it's cold or rainy because people walk in out of desperation.  It's too bad, they have a great location and lots of potential to turn it around.

  3. We stopped in for a coffee so I can only attest to the quality of that. Or coffees were actually fresh and flavored the way we wanted them. They had flavor shot at Ann's and not the regular flavor trip coffee. Our server was super awesome and actually pretty funny to talk to which really made the whole experience. There were a lot of people eating there and from what I can tell the food looked pretty good in people seem to be enjoying it.

  4. Grabbed a quick cup of iced coffee over here the other day. It was nothing special, but it wasn't bad either. The establishment itself is very cute and located on the corner of Houston and Allen. It has huge windows that open up and they open late!

The guy who helped me was very kind and I didn't wait too long for my coffee. I'd definitely like to come back and try some of their food next time!

  5. I've been to Sugar Cafe twice over the years–once after a long night out with friends back in the day and once more recently with one of my best friends after she announced she was in the mood for brunch at a place with a "classic diner" vibe.

I like the idea of places that are 24 hours and this is certainly a cute eatery particularly for late night munchies.  It has a prime location on the LES and close to the East Village, so I am sure that it does most of its business after dusk.  The food isn't amazing, but it is good enough that I am not surprised that it has withheld the test of time.

  6. Not a fan of this place. I strolled in here post-meal at Katz's Deli which is down the street and was hankering for a sweet something to appease my dessert cravings. What caught my eye was the delectable desserts staring at me through the glass case in the store.

My friend and I ordered a rainbow cookie cake, pumpkin pie and a black and white cookie. We decided to sit in the shop and eat our desserts. After taking my first bite I was instantaneously disappointed. I was expecting the quality of Veniero's, Magnolia Bakery, Ferrara's or other bake shops in NYC. I wasn't impressed. The pumpkin crust was stale and the pie didn't seem too fresh.

The other thing I was shocked by was that there was a bee in the glass case where the baked goods were on display. When we pointed that out, the guys who worked there grabbed the bee with their hands and removed it from the glass. But they did not proceed to wear gloves as they served us our desserts – I was a bit grossed out by that.

  7. The staff is super friendly – the food takes a long time to come out, even if there's not many people there, which is a problem for impatient persons such as myself. The good thing is that it's open 24 hours and in a central location. I support local business in general and this place adds to the appeal of my block

  8. Gotta go with four stars here!

After having a few beers at Culturefix, I was craving something sweet as I made my way to the F train to go back up town, to my de-luxe apartment in the sky.  I thought I'd just have to get a melty candy bar from the newsstand in the subway but lo and behold….the Sugar Café materialized before me!

Their case of delightful goods tempted me at every turn…I almost went for the toll house pie.  But then I saw my precious…a giant chocolate chip cookie.  The guy who rang me up was nice and his co-worker was very funny, giving a couple that was there a hard time.  Also, both were very easy on the eyes.

My cookie was great and I left the place with a smile.  I'm pro-Sugar Café, and I approve this message.
