There's only one thing you need to know about this place: FILIPINO BREAKFAST PLATTERS.
Tocilog, Longsilog, or Tapsilog for $5.50.
And they deliver (which i dont really recommend considering our food took a while to get when we ordered)
You'll be burping garlic ALLLLLLLL day.
Hole-in-the-wall deli that cooks meals that taste like you went over to your Filipino friend's house. And that's a good thing.
Really straightforward Filipino cooking. They're open breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We tried their dinner platters, charged about $7 each for a to-go box of rice, meat and two eggs over easy. Just enough food for one in each box. Wanted to try the lechon but was told they make it fresh – will call 30 mins ahead next time to try it.
As for the food, it's pretty good. We're still looking for a contender that's up to par with Mama Fina's in Elmwood Park – still haven't found one, but this is worlds better than Pandan in Bloomfield and at a much fairer price point.
Don't forget to specifically ask for garlic rice. We didn't ask and we regretted it after reading the reviews!
Get takeout – a couple of tables in the deli but the ambiance is lacking. Not that you'd come here for the atmosphere.
If you're not paying attention while driving, it can be easy to miss this place. It's right on the corner of Franklin and Berkeley–it has a faded red owning and a "We Sell Lechon" sign outside. There is no parking lot, only side street parking that's shared with nearby homes and neighboring businesses.
R&L Coffee Shop and Deli offers both traditional breakfasts and sandwiches (omelettes, eggs and Taylor ham, BLTs, chicken cutlet sandwiches, etc), along with a few Filipino dishes–pancit, lumpia, longsilog, tapsilog, tocilog, and corned beef-silog. There are a few snacks hanging on the front shelf you could also buy.
– Tapsilog ($6.55): I actually wanted Longsilog, but the owner said he is known for his tapa (dried marinated beef). In that case, I went with the tapsilog, which comes with garlic rice, two fried eggs cooked over-easy, and a generous serving of tapa. The beef was tender, seasoned well, and not too dry. It was sliced into chunks, so it's easy to eat with your garlic rice. The garlic taste isn't that strong in the rice, which is good if you're here during lunch.
– Tocilog ($6.55): This was for someone else, but was able to try their tocino (cured marinated pork). Each chunk of tocino is much larger than what I am used to, which is great given how tender the pork was. If you've never had it before, tocino is usually softer than tapa. It is also sweet since it's cured in a sugar-based marinade. I can tell this is homemade since the sweetness is light, unlike the frozen store-bought tocino. It was also cooked perfectly.
This eatery is, as others mentioned, cluttered. There are boxes of junk all over the place, but the silogs I tried so far are authentic. There are only two tables and four counter seats. For the price and taste of the food, it's a good place for a quick bite or take out.
I came here for take out for late breakfast last weekend. I don't know much about Philipino food. I order two platters so I could get a sampling. I pointed to the beef and a stir fried canned corned beef with onions. I think I saw the guy pour a ton of garlic salt when he was making the garlic rice. If that's the case I found the secret and will add it to my rice from now on,
The place is really a hole in the wall. I would not try the pocky and other candy he has for sale. I'd stick to the high turnover items here.
I paid in cash. I don't think he accepts cc. I would also call in the order. With snow outside, parking is limited. It's best to order ahead and do the double park and hope you don't ruin people's day.
