Genuine Roadside

“Genuine Roadside is some of the better food I've tried at Gotham West (which is definitely saying a lot).”

“My favorites are the Spicy Smokehouse Burger (with fries), Strawberry Shake, and their 3-pack cookies.”

“The burgers at Genuine are better than shake shack, the taco joint is amazing and the ribs at Cannibal are out of this world.”

  1. I am so torn. I sit here on my Amtrak train headed back to my hometown of Washington, DC and I just can't decide on a rating for Genuine Roadside. When I have a block, I do stream of consciousness writing so here are my thoughts:

+1 star for location. It's in the hipster cool Gotham West Market close to the Javits Center on the East Side of Manhattan.

+1 star for service. I've been here twice and each time the person taking my order made me feel like he knew me…and not in a creepy way. It was good customer service!

+1 star for their burger. I didn't have this, but my foodie/chef friend, Keith, did and he said it was one of the best burgers he's ever had.

+1 star for their spicy cucumber salad. I did have this and it's what I craved and haven't been able to have since leaving Beijing in 2005. Thanks, Genuine Roadside.

-1 star for a sub par chicken sandwich and a sub par spicy chicken sandwich. I was expecting a flavorful experience and it just didn't live up to ones I've had in DC (Go Pineapple and Pearls in Barracks Row….or honestly even the Spicy Chicken Sandwich at Chick-fil-A).

There you have it, folks. A three star rating.

  2. Their burgers are to die foooooor. Itty bitty, but totally worth it! My favorites are the Spicy Smokehouse Burger (with fries), Strawberry Shake, and their 3-pack cookies. Excellent customer service and spacious seating area in the back. A must try if you're ever in Gotham West.

  3. The hell with chick-fil-a, Genuine makes a juicy chicken sandwich, which will slap you silly and make you forget your in New York. The buttermilk battered chicken screams authentic southern flavor with apple / celeriac slaw and a little sambal mayo.

  4. The ALT was UHH-mazing. Everything from the juicy, crunchy fried green tomato to the bun were on point. I added bacon, because otherwise its a veggie sandwich, and this gave it a little something extra.

    Super tasty, highly recommend.

  5. Craving for some sandwich on a freezing day, so Genuine became my first choice. With so many options, I could not help but order their signature buttermilk battered chicken sandwich.

While the fried chicken meat was crispy, the apple coleslaw was refreshing, and balancing out the whole flavor. However, the starch on top of chicken was a bit too much so I felt like biting on the bread…Given the price tag, I would rather turn to David Chang's Fuku for chicken sandwich.

  6. I came here on a Thursday night after fixing flat tire nearby at Carlos' Flat Fix. After looking around in Gotham Market, we decided on Genuine Roadside. I ordered the beef brisket and a draft. Service was extremely slow. There were three cooks and there were like no one ordered before us. I had to wait 20 minutes for my sandwich, and 5 minutes more because the cashier disappeared and no one was able to hand me the sandwich on the counter.

The beef brisket was good — it was juicy and good balance of marbled fat. The bread was toasted just right. The sandwich got a bit cold though because it was left on the counter for too long.

TL;Dr Solid sandwich but the service is too slow.

  7. They have one good buttermilk chicken sandwich!   4 stars due to the price… I paid ~$11 for a sandwich (which I guess is somewhat reasonable foe Gotham west market).

I came here on a Saturday afternoon(7:30pm) wanting to try the sandwich as I saw many Yelp mentions. My sandwich was prepared in no time. Seems like it was fried to be set aside first and when an order is placed, they fry it the second time so it's crispy and wont take too much time. In comparison, my friends single stack burger took 5-7 more mins as they made it fresh.

We were both really happy with our sandwich/burger. The chicken was so crispy and yet so juicy on the inside. It's bigger than the burger! There is some type of spice on the batter that gives it a nice fragrant taste. The apple cole slaw was amazing too. Overall a great great chicken sandwich.

  8. I would marry that Buttermilk Battered Chicken Sandwich. No pre-nup.

Seriously that perfect crisp on the fry of the batter, the light and buttery bun, the tangy sambas mayo countered by the crisp and refreshing Apple celeriac slaw – it just worked. Everything you want in a battered chicken sandwich without the heaviness of a fried dish.

Everything else I've tried on the menu was delicious as well but like I said… That sandwich? I'd put a ring on it.
