Spoiler alert: the Upper East Side's BEST dumplings have been located. And quickly consumed!
I've passed Shanghai Pavillion so many times. However, my curiosity didn't get the best of me until a friend with a very discerning palate nudged me towards the restaurant. 'One of the UES's best kept secrets' for premium Chinese, she insisted.
We started with dim sum, of course. The Pork Juicy Dumplings are, well let's just say, their sex is on fire. That special. With 'juicy' as a middle name can't say I expected anything less.
My two dining companions and I split orders of the General Tso's Chicken, an eggplant dish and the Velvet Sea Bass. Too much food (our bad) but everything was just outstanding. I enjoy my Chinese made with a heavily-spiced hand as long as my water refills follow closely behind… and they did. Jen asked to have her entree wrapped but then quickly reconsidered: Velvet Sea Bass probably shouldn't go dancing with us at the bar.
The service is impeccable and the space, elegant– clearly, the management takes great pride in presenting meticulous dishes timed perfectly. Go. Now. Before I come back to New York and take all of your dumplings.
Pros: great xiao long bao, lovely staff, cozy ambiance, decent veggies, solid fish dish.
Cons: what in the ever-loving heck was that mango chicken?!
DON'T ORDER THE MANGO CHICKEN. It's just a world of weird.
Pistachio ice cream was top notch.
The food was alright, definitely not the best option for Chinese food on the UES, I much prefer Wa Jeal or even Lili's.
We ordered the soup dumplings, which were fine, but the skins were a bit thick and tougher than I would've preferred, with that little nub of extra skin at the top which the best soup dumplings won't have.
We also got the eggplant with garlic sauce which was ok, have definitely had better, and the lionshead meatballs, which I actually really enjoyed. That dish was probably my fave one, although I wish they gave more meatballs!
this is really 3.5 stars.. I AGAIN wish i could indicate this!
Chinese New Year celebration for about 15 people brought me here. I was a bit skeptical at first being that it's Upper East Side and usually to get authentic asian food you must or should venture into the small streets of any of the 3 NYC Chinatowns and after places like Shun Lee Palace I just stay sequestered from high end Chinese places. Now on to the good stuff. We had a feast! My only complaint would be about the appetizer section which included a soup dumpling (yeay good), spring roll – hard and not exactly tasty and shrimp dumpling which was decent. The main course dishes were of course served family style and the seabass special dish was really excellent, along with string beans and chicken and lo mein dishes (nothing special there) and string beef fish which was very well made and super tasty. The tea kept coming i think they had to be reminded about the rice.. but portions worked out well. The last course – dessert – which ended up being fruit I wish it was fresh lychee and not canned. overall it was a very nice experience and the staff was friendly and the restaurant ambiance was welcoming and not overdone.
What a fancy interior! Came here today for lunch because I was too lazy to make the trek down to Chinatown for soup dumplings. Not bad but way overpriced. Pork soup dumplings are $9 and the ones with crab meat are $10. Not bad, but they have a thicker wonton wrapper and are smaller than the ones you can find downtown.
Had two lunch specials, the tangerine beef and the crispy duck. Both well proportioned for $8, beef was a little too heavy on the sauce but I like the spice it had. The duck was a little oddly cut and more crisp than actual meat.
Overal good quality just overpriced because of the location. Not a bad deal for lunch.
