Open 24-7, it's the always-friendly guys behind the counter that keep me coming back.
As our 4thfathers once said, Go 4th and Deli. At any time of day, or night. And I mean, any time.
What is great about E4D.
1) It is literally open 24 hours a day.
2) Everything is just as good at any time of day.
3) They have a big selection of sandwiches and other goods.
4) Considering it's Manhattan, they have decent prices.
5) They are really really nice guys.
6) E4D could stand for Elizabeth 4 D**k. And if it's Hurley, or a certain other Elizabeth or Liz that I know, then you're in luck.
What is not so great.
1) The sandwiches are really pretty average.
2) The dressings that go on the sandwiches kind of taste like sugar.
3) The sugar has nothing to do with the awesome song Lips Like Sugar by Echo And The Bunnymen.
So all in all it averages out to a 4. Which is perfect because it's the Deli on East FOUR. I mean, it was meant to be, am I right?
Whoa.
I love coming here for some sandwiches! They have plenty of choices and you can easily customize the options they provide to suit your tastes. I love how they include a pack of chips and a banana with your sandwich! Makes it super worth it. This is a deli, so it's more of a take-put/grab and go kind of place, therefore, don't expect to be able to eat in here. Definitely one of my favorite delis of the LES.
Not being a local, I wanted to try a something in the hood – something low key, within close walking distance, not anything fancy. I was in the mood for a simple, honest cold sandwich since I've been dining out everyday since my visit here. I took stroll down Ave B and saw this deli and was pleased that they had their menu posted on the window so I can get an idea of what they served without holding up the line cuz well you know NYC, everything is so fast-paced. They had a nice array of different sandwiches both cold and hot, and I decided on the Hunny Bunny which totally hit the spot – honey ham, honey turkey, cheese, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato topped with honey mustard – delish! I smiled as the super friendly, soft spoken (and quite cute) young man handed me my order because inside the box was my sandwich, a small salad, and a banana! What a nice surprise, and all for $5! Portions were really huge as I was only able to eat half, which meant I had lunch the next day. If I lived here, this would totally be my weekly sandwich shop.
An unsuspecting place to get a Sammich made with love in the wee hours of the night. They have some interesting sammich selections on the big board and you can't go wrong with any. I got the #11 which was buffalo chicken, boars head btw, cheese, jalapeños, lettuce, tomato, and horseradish dressing on a roll. Banging! And it's only $6 and comes with chips and a a surprise banana!! Also the guys running the place are super chill.
I've never been a big dessert person, but I really love Ben & Jerry's Americone Dream. I'm not sure what it is, really.*
But both Adinah's at 2nd and C AND Ben's on Ave B were sold out of the Dream, so I took a chance on this deli. I'm surprised I'd never been in there; it's bright and clean, and packed with a wide variety of bodega staples.
And when I walked up to the conveniently located cooler, there it was, a shining beacon of deliciousness. (I should note that this ice cream cooler is actually thoughtfully organized, unlike Ben's which is basically a hodgepodge of Häagen-Dazs and Ben & Jerry's, dumped all over each other in no discernible order.)
So thanks East 4th Deli Inc. You made my dreams come true.
__________
*Actually, I am. It's the vanilla ice cream with fudge covered waffle cone pieces and a caramel swirl. How do the waffle cone pieces stay so crunchy? Who knows? It's one of the mysteries of the universe.
Also, B&J/Colbert donates some of the proceeds to provide food and medical assistance for disadvantaged children, to help veterans and their families, and support environmental causes. That's nice.
