  2. Amazing. The vibe is wonderfully laid back – the perfect neighborhood bar. Can't say enough good things about the bartenders, and the patrons are very friendly.

Oh, and the happy hour/ late night drink specials are insane… especially for New York.

I can't comment on the food because I've never ordered but if you're in the neighborhood, you've got to check it out!

  3. St. George Tavern was a welcome surprise on a Tuesday evening that satisfied the thirsty and the starving (me).

As others have commented, the decor is quirky. Our bartender was great. The songs were a throwback to the 90s (I mean, Usher, Blackstreet — and a weird interlude by Sam Smith).

I had the buffalo cauliflower, which is still straight up bar food, but wasn't as bad as hangover food. I heard the wings were good too.

All in all, a great spot.

  4. St. "George" is actually a Chinese guy that makes pretty darn good Chinese food.  From mapo tofu, to kung pao chicken, to hot and sour soup – it was all very good.

The mapo and kung pao were all legit.  The mapo used picked vegetables, and the kung pao was not an Americanized version, which is often too sweet.  No seriously, this was good and legit.

    Good service here too.

  5. A strange place. I was there twice on a recent NYC weekend. Once we came in for drinks and then had a brunch there just because it was super close. It was fun for a group to come in for late night drinks but mostly because it was dead and we had the run of the place. The drinks were really good. Brunch was also pretty empty, and the range of Asian options mixed with traditional american food was odd. I wouldn't suggest anyone go out of your way to visit here, but if you happen to be in the area, stop in. I will say we totally loved our server, and she was fun an personable.

  6. Saint George….  The word saint can be very misleading.  From the little bit that I know, he was a military official who became a martyr way back in the 300s AD.  Hailed as a revered saint, he lives on in the myth 'Saint George and the Dragon'.  One has got to wonder how much blood was on his hands.  Rather than a halo, I initially think of all the horrid things that had to have happened during the crusades.  Well, if we really think of it that way, then this place makes a lot more sense.  The only word that really comes to mind when I think of my experience here is SINFUL.

Hidden on the side streets of the financial district, this place can be easily overlooked as it resides within the quarters of Holiday Inn.  Seriously, who would think to eat there.  Walking in, the lovely decor of vintage victorian woodwork throughout the dining area and along their spacious bar sends you back in time.  It is, however, contradicted by its eastern menu of Chinese food, throwing your mind into a blender of "wtf is this place!?!?" because it doesn't make any sense at all.  I know, scary.  I can only imagine that was probably the exact feelings they had when the westerners ran into the Chinese for the very first time so it's only fitting to feel that way here.  Don't be fooled… Their chinese food here is solid.

When I visited about a week or 2 ago, it seemed like they were in a transition with their menu, heading into a more western style type of dining with a refined modern twist.  I was offered to try a few of their dishes they happened to be working on rather than ordering from their actual menu.  Being the cat that never died from curiosity, of course I went for their trial stash of goodies.

They started me off with a petite bowl of Strawberry Gazpacho.  It was the perfect remedy for a scorching summer in the concrete jungle.  Chilled with bright flavors of sweet n tangy ripe tomatoes and grilled strawberries finished w a slight kick from some kind of fresh green pepper.  I wanted more but was too shy to ask.

Next came a house cured lemon zest salmon livened up with dill, capers, and salmon caviar complemented with a side salad of summers greens, a lemon cream dressing, and crunchy crostini.  I would go back for those if they put it on the upcoming menu.

Last came an all time traditional American favorite with an interesting twist that left me wanting more.  Chicken and waffles.  Wait for it…….. A beautifully crispy skinned chicken confit, rosemary buttered waffles, and 2 strips of crispy bacon drizzled with a sweet n savory maple chicken aus jus.  That initial crisp leads to a tender piece of perfectly prepared chicken that disappeared rather quickly.  It was all in the details!  Another piece please?  They better keep that on the menu because I'd surely be back for it.  Maybe even allow an upgrade for a 2 piece order?  I don't know.  I hope they read my review.

Their flavors were so sinful I was honestly beginning to feel guilty.  Their new westernized menu being created by 2 young chefs seem like a promising future for this decked out tavern.  Their staff was very warm and friendly to every table that I noticed and worked very intuitively rather than reactively.  No halos here at Saint George… Just a tail n horns with devilishly amazing platters and plenty of alcohol to go with it.  Good luck coming out a saint.

PS.  I requested to see their kitchen since they were creating a new menu and they took me for a quick spin.  They have a huge clean kitchen and storage which is rare especially in NY and SF.  When I was there, they just got in a huge striped bass Chef Randal and Jordan was working on.  Got me wondering what they were going to do with it…

  7. This place was amazing! Authentic Chinese food in a pub atmosphere? Yeah!
The lunch specials are a terrific value.

The prawns in lobster sauce was my favorite dish. The drinks are good and the wings are great as well. Service is excellent!

  8. Excellent deal for checking in on yelp with one free cocktail. Waiter was very friendly offering free shots and explained the drinks quite well. There was a great music selection with hits from the 80s and 90s which added to the fun and relaxing atmosphere.
