In the quest for a reliable lunch spot in the food wasteland that is the Financial District, I really thought this place had potential, hence the three stars. Kind of an aggregate.
I came here several times over the course of last year and the food and service became progressively bad. The service is staggered – if you order the Pad Thai or something equally safe, you'll get your food quickly, but god forbid you order something slightly off the beaten path – you'll end up waiting for a while. And your colleagues will just stare daggers at you for forcing them to be polite and wait while their Pad Thai gets cold.
The decor is off-putting and the last (and possibly final time) I came here, the waiter's were playing musical chairs with the seating. So we had something to watch while waiting for our food. It was very unsettling and the odd thing was that they weren't rearranging the seats for a large party or anything. It seemed to be on a whim.
The food is not so spectacular that you'd ignore the rest of the weirdness. I just hop on the R and go to Chinatown if my hankering for the spicy/sour/sweet of Thai calls.
When you're hungry and your boss is treating the team to a free lunch, you can't really complaint about the food if you're not paying for it.
There's nothing really special about the Asian Fusion restaurant. The dining area is on the dim side and in a need of a renovation. It tries to give an impression of a trendy restaurant but does not succeed.
My sushi entree choice consisting of tuna, spicy salmon and eel roles (including salad) were fresh, tasty and very good.
I would dine here again for lunch regardless of who's paying (the prices are reasonable). I give three stars just for the food and service.
