  1. I came here about three times. I would not order the ceviche here. They skimp on portions big time. I would get the ceviche at Riko. Most of their food items are solid. The chicken, the pork chops, lomo saltado. All worth trying at least once. They are flexible about replacements in their combinations. Their fried rice is really good. Its got that perfect bite and lots of shrimp.

  2. Chinese-Latin fusion. That's something I don't see too often. Flor de Mayo offers an array of menu items so if one type of food doesn't fit your needs, there's always another. I came during the week and it was pretty packed. Very small quarters with the hustle and bustle vibe of a traditional Chinese restaurant.

The menu is interesting. The Peruvian items are much more reasonable than the Chinese dishes. I find it surprising that the Shrimp Lo Mein is almost $20. Really? But a HALF A CHICKEN and sweet plantains (my dish of the night) is only $10.50. The pricing is definitely off. My meal was good. I think the highlight was the plantains. They were huge and had that slight crisp on the outside with the natural sweetness of the Maduros on the inside. I'd eat a whole plate if I could. My chicken, wasn't bad. It just wasn't great. Moist, but lacking in flavor and I really wanted a solid sauce to go along with it. Like a crema or a hot sauce to really make it top notch. But my meal overall was good.

If you're looking for something different when it comes to the route of fusion – definitely try out Flor de Mayo. I'd go back and try more plantains and maybe the Chinese route.

  3. After several drinks, wanted some filling takeout before heading to bed. One of the nicer options open later at night with an extremely large menu.

Ordered the Country Duck ($12.50) and a Rotisserie chicken ($8.50). Duck is smothered in a coconut-brown sauce and cooked enough to make juicy. Mostly boney, yet enough for one person. The chicken is way meatier with a lightly crisped skin that added a nice flavor. The plantains that came with the duck were on the dry end, so had to add some hot sauce to get through it.

I like the value here, and I definitely ate more than one person should really eat in one sitting. Not the best Peruvian food I've had, but if you want a quick meal for less money then this is the place to hit up.

  4. This place is good but my issue with this place is that I'm from Miami where Peruvian food is better than it is in Peru. That's my source of comparison. It doesn't compare to any of the Peruvian places I've been to in Miami but it might be the best that Peruvian food gets in Manhattan. Flor De Mayo does not take reservations. We were a big party and waited about 1 hour on a Saturday night which wasn't too unreasonable. I'd recommend getting here early though. It's a fusion between Peruvian food and Chinese food but it isn't actually a fusion. They have Peruvian dishes on the menu and they have Chinese dishes on the menu. They don't have any dishes that actually fuse them together. I didn't order the Chinese food so I can't really comment on it but it looked like typical Cantonese Chinese food. My issue is that if I want Chinese food, I'll go to a Chinese place but this is a good option if you're with people who can't decide what type of food you want or you have picky eaters with you! The Peruvian food was good but nothing special. I tried the rotisserie chicken which was good, juicy rotisserie chicken but I mean, how good can rotisserie chicken really be? Their plantains were exactly on point and those were the best things here. They weren't too fried or too soft or too hard – they were just right. I also had the ceviche which I had been craving for the last year ever since I left Miami. It hit the spot but I can name 10 places in Miami with better ceviche. The fish was tough, not soft like ceviche should be. There wasn't enough lime in the sauce and I didn't taste any pepper either. Also, the best ceviche is creamy. Prices were reasonable though a bit on the high end. They did have mofongo here which I would love to try in the future.

  5. Peruvian and Chinese food, and tiki drinks in the same restaurant? I can't lie, this sounded like a weird combo to me, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.

There are only a few vegetarian/vegan options here, and the food is solid, but not spectacular. The plantains and cilantro rice were very good, and the mushroom/tofu dish I had was just okay. The tiki drinks, on the other hand, were incredible-they even come in ceramic tiki mugs! Delicious fruity blends that are VERY heavy on the booze. I tried the Mai Tai and the Zombie and would recommend both. I look forward to returning, most likely just for cocktails next time.

  6. Love the Chinese Peruvian fusion for its uniqueness! Liked the yucca fries, tofu with black mushroom, and the fried squid that came in a trio of fried seafood (the fried scallops and shrimp were also good but the squid was my favorite). The yellow rice was a must. Will definitely return! Heads up – it does get pretty crowded and loud here so be warned.

  7. Flor de Mayo still has solidly good food, but I feel like it's sort of gone downhill in the past few years. My favorite dish is still the lomo saltado and they make a delicious pork chop, but compared to the times I've visited in the past, my most recent visit was slightly lacking. The food wasn't as "magical" and the service was chaotic.

  8. I was skeptical at first about Peruvian and Asian fusion. After seeing good reviews on Yelp I decided to give it a shot. We ordered the most popular dishes, half chicken with plantains and squid ink fried rice. They were both surprisingly good. Chicken was flavorful and tender. Plantains were soft and sweet. We really liked the ink fried rice. It tasted much better than it looked. All ingredients were very fresh, shrimp, chopped ham, peas. Price is very reasonable given the larger portion. I may go back and try other items.
