Great local spot for fish and chips. Honestly I came in with low expectations given that there were only a couple tables occupied on a Friday night and it's not an old Irish Pub, but I was pleasantly surprised how good the fish was. Their logo is "Old Country Style Fish and Chips" and that's what it tasted like, from an old family recipe.
On this visit I ordered the fish, shrimp, and scallop platter for $20. I had the option to get everything fried or broiled or mix and match. I had the fish fried and the shrimp/scallops broiled. My favorite was the fish. The portion of the fish was quite large, too. The batter was light and crispy and the cod was fresh, flaky, and moist. Dousing it with malt vinegar, made it delicious. The shrimp and scallops broiled in a butter sauce was also fresh and tasty, but the portions were much smaller – 2 pieces of shrimp and 3 scallops.
You can choose chips, roasted potatoes or rice as your side. To minimize my intake of fried food, I chose the roasted seasoned potatoes which complemented the seafood well.
My husband and I also shared the Fried Oysters. The oysters themselves were good, but I found the batter a bit odd. It was nothing like the batter used for the fish.
The fish is really the signature dish of this restaurant and I would order the Original Fish and Chips platter next time. Or I would get the fried clams (runs as a special) which is a guilty pleasure of mine.
The service is very friendly and the dining area is quaint and cozy. I would definitely come back here for the fish and chips.
3.5 for food it's good!
4.0 for service!
Sometimes your just in the mood for fried fish!
I loved the fried cod fish and chips here! The fish is battered so if your like my fiancé, you might not take liking to it. She enjoyed the fish, but did separated the fried batter. Oh well. I will still return to enjoy fried fish and chips here!
Ehhh, frighteningly ordinary and very expensive, 16.50$ for an order of fish and chips? C'mon! The best fish and chips in NYC are 12.00$. As far as the fish and chips, fish is fresh, it better be, and the batter is OK but the chips are very ordinary and need to be soused with malt vinegar. I've never had anything else on the menu so I can't speak for those items but I have had better fish and chips and paid less so I am not a fan.
Walk in and the place is packed: good sign. Use the 'loo' and it's immaculate: another good sign. Food comes out quick and tastes great: another good sign.
Kearny's loss is definitely Lyndhurst's gain. It's not healthy eating but once in a 'loo' you can't go wrong.
(Full disclosure: back in the day I worked up the street at their main competitors, The Argyle. But back then I was a vegetarian and didn't like seafood so my diet consisted of chips and a piece of cake and lots of iced tea.)
