No, not Clinton Hill – Fort Greene's chinese food hot spot! Has been for yeeears.
Since a small child growing up here, this food has remained authentic and fresh as from the time they first opened for business. I love their food, whenever I am in Brooklyn, I always make it a point to stop by and pick up some grub.
If you are from the Neighborhood, then you know this place is a staple; it's woven into the fabric of Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Some may come close, but none ever take the place of Kum Kau. Go find out for yourself.
MY suggestion, start with the beef lo mein and/or boneless spare rib tips. You won't be disappointed.
Their shrimp with broccoli and brown rice is delicious. Not greasy at all. I like their chicken wings and fried plantains as well! The shrimp dumplings are on the doughy side, but still tasty.
Yeah. This place is definitely over hyped.
I been hearing about the establishment for a few yrs now with many ppl touting that it's the best in brooklyn. So, being hungry and in the area I decided to stop in. I ordered my food and 30 seconds later decided to substitute one item for another the lady was so effin rude. I usually say going in my yelp review but this place is a Chinese food restaurant and I won't allow customer service to bias this particular review. I will only base this review on food. I'm sorry to say but it sucked! It was not tasty, it was lacking the packing (flavor lol).
I opened up my sesame chicken and no sauce. Dry ass effin chicken. I ate some of the spare rib tips and no bbq sauce, dry ass rib tips, lol. The only thing that was tasty was the chicken dumplings. I'm sitting here livid that I payed close to 30 bucks for disastisfaction. I just hope the fam eats it lol and I'm still bringing some for work mañana!
I will add that the Chinese food restaurant that use to be on Flatbush near 7th Avenue where christies bakery use to be is my fav! (No longer there I believe :l)
… I was NOT impressed.
Basically it is very traditional in what they serve,
spring rolls
egg rolls
lo mein
general tao
all of the regular items you are used to seeing. My issue was my food had NO FLAVOR like at all. It was completely bland. Which was very disappointing.
And to top it all off the waiter had TERRIBLE body odor. She kept stopping by and reaching over the table. It was disgusting. I lost what was left of my appetite.
It was bad enough that I informed the management.
So…yea idk….
– One of my favorite Chinese spots in Brooklyn
– Everything is good, but my favorite is General Tso
– So cheap
– So much food (I get 3 meals easily out of my $6 dishes)
– Cash only 🙁 (But my Chinese spots are, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised)
Listen… Kum Kau got one Pratt grad to write a children's book about the restaurant and now they're acting all brand new with these LCD menus and higher prices…
I'm clearly upset by the improvements to Kum Kau because its no longer the cheap eats spot on Myrtle, but the semi-overpriced Chinese food spot that makes very few good veggie dishes. I ordered their veggie dumplings, which came fried despite me asking for steamed. Whatever. They were average considering I was hungry, but probably below average if I'm being honest with myself. I wouldn't eat here unless you're really hungry and most places in the area are closed.
Some friends swear this is the best Chinese food in the neighborhood. In my opinion, it's solid, but not the best. But, it has been around a long time, they have long hours, and they are pretty consistent. Also, the portions are large. This is basic fast food style Chinese.
Lapin and I were craving Chinese food, since we were in the area we thought should stop in. They have two different sections, a take out area — which looked shoddy and the sit in restaurant area which looked a lot better. We were seated rather quickly as they didn't look super busy. Our waiters were nice and attentive to some degree. We sometimes had to ask for extra napkins, hot sauce, water refill but they were quick and nice about it. We got shrimp toast which was very unique. We never had it but it was okay, super greasy though. Lapin had an order of spare rib tips that he enjoyed. We also got wonton soup and egg drop soup which were average tasting. We ordered shrimp fried rice, general tso chicken and chicken broccoli to eat family style. The portions were huge and we were able to take the leftovers to lunch the next day. The food tasted pretty good and quality was on par for the price. We also got a fruit bowl which was a small bowl with handful of pineapple chunks with a toothpick to eat it with. I got a bowl of vanilla ice cream which had some ice chunks but tasted like regular vanilla ice cream from the grocery store.
