The food tastes pretty good, though it's veering towards the heavier side. There's also a bit of grease.
Came here at approximately Wednesday at lunch, a little after the lunchtime surge had died down.
This place has a lot of things on the menu that are really authentic. I know the word "authentic" gets thrown around a lot, but the place is fairly good in it's portrayal of a lot of Beijing foods. The Kung pao chicken, the dumplings and the vegetables are all fairly good, and reflective of authenticity.
I would generally say that the food here is only worth three stars, but this place's redeeming feature is definitely the lunch special- if you drop by here between 11 and 3 during lunch, you can get a lunch box to go (or to stay, if you want to pay tip) for only $5.00 dollars. The food is honestly decent, as are the servers.
Overall, a breath of fresh air in the otherwise overpriced little italy
Don't waste your time on any other restaurant in china town! This place is amazing and so affordable. The lunch specials here are so cheap and delicious. For lunch $5 will get you a protein (chicken, meat), side rice and side soup. The place is packed during lunch but the service is fast and accurate. The bathrooms are tiny but clean which is a huge plus for me. If you're in the area give it a try!
I had my reservations about this place, given the location and the ambience. But the boyfriend wanted to try, so let's go
There is seating inside and outside but we opted for inside seating. We were looking mainly for appetizers; we got
Cold noodles with chili sauce
Pancake roll with spicy shredded beef
Pan fried pork buns
The cold noodles were a little bland and I feel like it was lacking a lot of flavors that generally comes when ordering cold noodles. The portion was decent and we shared it with no issue. I did end up adding some of that vinegar to my noodles and it tasted better lol
The pancake role was a little disappointing, the pancake itself was great very flaky and crunchy. However I was surprised with the filling, it was more like a beef and bell pepper dish and they had rolled it up and called it a new dish. Don't get me wrong! It was piping hot and delicious nonetheless but I had a different expectation when it came to SPICY shredded beef, not something like an entree. I also got a big bite of ginger in my cut for the first bite :(. This dish though, you might not wanna share.
The pan fried buns were probably the best item out of the three. It came hot and steamy, a tad bit oily. There is fatty soup inside the bun and the pork filling itself was tender and flavorful. Mixed with the vinegar and you're all set!
I won't come back because I feel like I could get something similar elsewhere and cheaper but definitely changed my earlier prospective of the place.
I was stuck between 3 stars and 4 stars so I decided to round up. First, service is pretty lackluster. We came in around 1.5 hours before closing time and there was only 3 other tables occupied with 1 paying their bill. We were given menus and basically left there for the next 15 minutes. No water, no tea, no one came by to ask if we were ready to order. Womp.
Their food is pretty good – a bit pricey for Chinatown but it's technically in Little Italy? The pan-fried dumplings were super juicy on the inside, which I love. The tomato paste + meat sauce "spaghetti" hit the spot on a rainy day. We finished up with the black sesame balls, which were really good. I think the sesame balls were the reason I rounded up!
They do a lunch special and a per person combo for dinner. They also do stamp cards for lunch – buy 12 and get the 13th free?
We came here to celebrate my friend's birthday on a Friday night – surprisingly, the restaurant was not crowded at all.
Sizing wise, it was definitely at the smaller side; so for every dish, we have to double the order. The spicy fish was a bit too salty, and not marinated well. However the sautéed short rib was tender and flavorful.
There are more better choices in Chinatown area, probably will not come back.
This isn't the best food you could get or at the best prices in Chinatown. The whole fish is a little small and overfried. The sauce that it comes with is tasty with lotus roots and thai chili peppers but ended up on the oily side. It's okay and a bit for the tourists… if you're a local and know how to navigate Chinatown, then you're probably better off going elsewhere.
The dumplings were juicy and the skin was just thick enough. Cheap and good food
