  1. the service is inattentive and unfriendly. The staff can be extremely rude at times, doesn't seem interested to see you coming back, pity the food is ok if not average Thai. But they can also  be cheap with the ingredients. On the Upper West Side. I'll never go back to this one. Better  go somewhere else.

  2. Groupon led me to this place. I ordered 3 dishes from the lunch and brunch specials menu for take out. Shrimp curried fried rice, chicken pad Thai, and beef in green sauce which came with an appetizer, I chose spring rolls.
I asked for a glass water and sat down to wait for my order.  The place had a good amount of people for lunch. The waitress refilled my glass politely as I waited (~25 mins) If you know what you want order ahead, but they have different lunch specials daily so you might want to ask about them. They gave me a complimentary thai tea for the wait 🙂
Food: the spring rolls were good with the sweet sauce 3/5
The chicken pad thai was also good wrapped in a omelette but not as flavorful as I'd like, it didn't have peanuts which I like but it did have a good amount of chicken which I had to cover it in sriracha 3/5
Beef with green sauce was spicy and flavorful but it was a bit too watery and it's a good amount of beef for a lunch special 3/5.
Overall this was a good average thai experience.

  3. What a pleasant surprise! This Thai restaurant has certainly stepped it up a notch from its NYC counterparts.

Located in a long and skinny storefront along Broadway, Sookk is immediately inviting with its dark and warm colors and gorgeous caged lamps hanging from the ceiling. (My friend Irina boasted that the women's room as awe-inspiring. Alas, I didn't experience this for myself. Next time, perhaps!)

The menu boasts the basics, such as Pad Thai, Drunken Noodles, and Fried Rice, but there's more than just that. Sookk boasts influences from, specifically, Bangkok and other East Asian locales. In addition, they incorporate many healing herbs and foods into their dishes, such as goji berries, ginger, ginseng, and pomegranate.

To eat, I got a nightly special, their mango lemongrass chicken. Three small and tender chicken breast filets were served with green beans, beautifully shredded fresh mango, and a mango sauce, with white rice and black sesame seeds on the side. It was all topped off with a gorgeous dark pink orchid flower. BRAVA on presentation! To drink, I got the Aura: sparkling white wine with pineapple juice and freshly shredded ginger. So refreshing!

My friends ordered such things as Pad Thai and curried vegetables, and they were amply satisfied. One friend got vegetarian salmon in their meal, and I'll be damned if it didn't taste and look like salmon! One friend ordered a drink called "The Detox". I am unsure how sake, sparkling white wine, lychee berries, and lemon juice will cure one's ills, but perhaps it IS the remedy for them and we've been none the wiser! (It's a potent ill' drink, indeed!)

Happy Hour prices: My drink is normally $6.50. Still not bad for a cocktail. The menu boasted $6 cocktails for Happy Hour, at your typical 5 -7 p.m., Monday through Friday timeframe. I thought I'd save fifty cents, but was amply pleased when the bill came and it was actually half off! Shoot…it's ALWAYS good to know a place that has Happy Hour drinks at only $3.25!

    Kin-Hai-Ar-Royh Na! (Bon appetite!)

  4. The evening that the post-Sandy nor'easter hit NYC and there was snow all around, Angeline P. came home and said "let's go tromp around in the snow". I thought that would be a great excuse to go check out Sookk which is almost a mile from our house. We made the trek and upon arrival were happy to sit down and take off our heavy coats and dry off.

We warmed up with tom yum goong and tom kha gai, both of them were very good and reasonably priced.

For my main dish I had what they called a 'claypot Thai paella.' It seemed intriguing as I love claypot rice, but was disappointed to see upon arrival that the dish had been fried up in a wok and merely scooped into a room-temperature clay pot. I said as much to the server and she seemed embarrassed that I had called her out on it (hey, real Thais probably like Chinese claypot rice too.)

It was tasty, but wasn't the thing I was expecting.

But the rest of the menu seems fairly inspired with their "Yaowarat" style Thai cooking and I hope to come back and try some other dishes (and if I see something interesting, make sure to ask questions about it before I order blindly and get disappointed. 🙂 )

  5. This is a delivery review.

Even though Sookk is on the pricier side (for Thai food), I've actually always preferred Sookk to other Thai restaurants that are closer to me because Sookk's dishes didn't seem as hastily prepared. But as of today, Sookk lost me as a loyal customer!

The first time I ever placed an order (back in October 2015), the person who picked up didn't bother to tell me that a $5 delivery fee would be added until 20 minutes after the order had been placed and processed (because I live north of a certain street). He was courteous and apologetic about it though, so I let it go.

Today, I placed via Seamless a delivery order of the Chicken Pad Thai Brunch Special. The special included a side salad – but the salad was nowhere to be found. I also requested some hot sauce on the side, but that was also absent. The pad thai ended up being so salty that I had no need for hot sauce, so I guess that worked itself out okay.

What's more, 5 minutes before the delivery man showed, I received 2 calls from either someone at the actual restaurant, or from the delivery personnel himself, angrily yelling "HELLO? DELIVERY?! DELIVERY?!" -except given the echo and noise that came from his end of the phone, I couldn't understand. Needless to say, I was irked. The absent salad and hot sauce didn't help. Bye Sookk:(

  6. I will admit that I come here too often. Often enough that I seriously question how this place stays in business because it is so empty every time I come. Do people mostly order take out here?!

Anyways. Despite being a ghost town every time I come, the food is GREAT!

Lunch specials are so awesome and their homemade ice cream is so awesome and their portion sizes so awesome and the plethora of appetizer options with the lunch specials is so awesome and everything is so awesome.

I hope you all check it out and love it too.

  7. I've been here several times throughout the years. The decor was much more beautiful about ~2-3 years ago when the colors on the threaded walls seemed more vibrant (now looking pretty old? cleaning ftw).

About a month ago, I bought a groupon for the place because of the mere convenience of the location to the day's plans (book culture!) and really crossed my fingers hoping for the best. Their $8 lunch special is pretty cheap, but sad that they now forgo the ice cream they used to have back then. Still, the brothy broth of clearness accompanies the meal…ours being Pad Thai & the Penang Curry. Also, we ordered the Tom Yum, Beef Tartare, and the Lychee Sangria.

Everything was pretty basic and edible, though edibility shouldn't have been in discussion. The Beef Tartare was very interesting, tasted good- though had me worrying for my disposal of said items later. The Lychee Sangria was bland and watered down- not much Sangria- maybe just colored Lychee juicy juice.

Overall, the place is just A-Ok! I wouldn't come here again…but I probably will just because the location is key to one of the neighborhoods I used to hang around in. The service was pretty okay, but no one made an remarkable impression.

  8. Great decor and service and good food- had a really nice dinner here with my older sister here.

They have a happy hour special featuring BOGO beer and $6 cocktails- both of us got the "Sookk Sake" (fruity and strong, exactly what I needed after a hard day at work!)

We ordered the Thai Paella in claypot bowl and the spicy Yaowarat noodles with beef. The noodles were thick lo mein-style noodles, stir fried with veggies in a spicy soy sauce. Solid taste with a spicy kick.

I think the paella outshined the noodles- filled with squid, shrimp and chunks of fried fish and topped off with fried garlic, I strongly recommend this dish- delicious and it is perfect for sharing.
