The Alcove is amazing!!! The vibe, ambiance, food, drinks are all on point at this establishment. This place is a great time for lunch, a night out with the ladies, and even a date. The staff is super friendly, always making sure you are having a great time and checking up on you. For drinks, my friend ordered a tamarind mojito and loves it. She has been there before and recommended the place. I just ordered a club soda and lime, but their beer and drinks offerings are extensive. The food is amazing. I for one am going healthy, so I chose one of the 3 salads, the cous cous salad and I added grilled chicken to my order. Omg was this salad deliciously amazing. It is the best salad I have ever had. The salad with the cous cous was so flavorful and the roasted corn added a nice sweetness to the salad. Now the grilled chicken was cooked perfectly, juicy and well seasoned. Delish I tell you. As for my friend, she ordered the tacos, pork, beef and chicken. She raved about them and couldn't resist to get it again. I tried some of the beef and it was well seasoned and cooked well. It was all she raved about and more. My best friend didn't want to stop there, so she asked that we share the shirt steak lollipops. I obliged and man oh man were they great. A lil too salty for my liking, but so tender marinated well and served on a bed of mesculum. Overall amazing amazing. I am definitely going back soon. 5 stars indeed!!!
Great place. We stopped in for just a drink but ended up staying most the night. Really friendly bartender, and owner, and a great community feel to the folks sitting at the bar.
We had the patacones, an epic hot dog, and the grilled cheese. Everything was testy. Especially good with the mango hot sauce they recommended.
Great beer selection, especially with the focus on local beers. LIC Beer Project, Rockaway Brewing, and Big Alice were all represented. We also ordered some good wine that came with very generous pours.
This is the sort of place you want to frequent. Can't recommend it enough.
Jonathan is the man! He provided awesome service and was super friendly and hospitable!
The ambience was nice, and the food was delicious and reasonably priced! Our table of 4 got wings and the steak lollipops. The steak was a nice cut; not too thin and not too thick, cooked medium.
We got the cuban sandwiches which were pretty bomb, and also the mini tacos, which had 3 different meats.
They have a small selection of craft beers on tap, and it was great they were supporting LIC beer project. We also ended up getting a few flights with the fireball shots.
The only downside was that it took awhile for us to get our check, even thought it wasn't as busy as it was when we first arrived, but definitely don't let that deter you!
Come check this place out and support you local people! I/we'll definitely be back! Be sure to arrive early as parking is a lil pain to find and it does/will get packed for dinner.
Found this little gem during a search for a bar with decent food and in close distance to where I live. Lo and behold I landed at The Alcove. As I entered this establishment, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they were full with two little seats remaining in the corner for my guest and I. Mind you it was Thurs night and this place is one block off of Roosevelt ave in an area where there is minimal parking and its packed?!? OKAY – this is a good thing! After sitting, we were asked what would like to drink and we proceeded to order our usual cocktails. We received our drinks and then ordered our dinner. We ordered spicy buffalo wings (10pcs/order), Alcove Cuban sandwich with a side of truffle & bacon fries (amaze-balls) and also their steak skewers. The wings were traditional bar wings but what stood out was that they had actual cubes of cheese blended into the sauce which was a nice touch. Out of the 3 dishes we ordered, the sandwich was by far the best. The pork inside the sandwich tasted like it took a little effort in cooking and preparing which was a plus. They also dress the sandwich in this light green sauce (pure magic) that I had to ask the waiter for an additional cup of it! Now the skewers were not up to par. For some reason, the skewers came to the table rather cold while everything else was perfect warm. The presentation of it was nice and the portion was fair (4 skewers/order with approximately 5 steak cubes/skewer). I didn't complain about the temperature of the food because their good outweighs their bad. I believe the owners were both there that night when we visited. The male owner was especially friendly and welcoming which is probably the reason why I kept my mouth shut about the cold skewers. Don't get me wrong, the flavor and taste was on point but just wish the dish arrived warm.
Anyway, this place is super cozy for a joint in Woodside and I am very glad that we landed here. This will definitely not be the last time I come here. Please take a trip out there, you wont regret it!
The elusive FIVE STARS. Yes, there are places worthy of that ranking. The Alcove being one of them, and I will tell you why in a nice list of bullet points.
– AWESOME bartenders/servers. While we were there, the bartenders WERE actually the servers for the tables as well…. Slow down service? NOT A TOUCH. These guy HUSTLED not to mention the kitchen is down a flight of stairs! They've prob lost 100lbs since this place opened.
– FOOD. This was honestly top 5 burger of my life. My bf actually ordered it, but I couldn't stop taking bites of it. Burger, Coleslaw, some sort of pineapple jam???? Bread was ridiculous.. THIS BURGER WAS AMAZING.
Challah grilled cheese?? HOLLA! 3 types of cheese, perfect challah bread. The presentation on it makes you think it wont be that good… WROOOOOOOOONG.
Taco appetizer- ask no questions, just get them.
You get that hipster, "i dont care about your service" vibe when you walk in…. But that couldn't be further from the truth. VERY mixed crowd, awesome decor…
GREAT, GREAT addition to the neighborhood.
Alcove- don't ever change! Don't get too big for your britches… You got a REAL good thing going on here.
Let me be clear, the skirt steak lollipops were amazing. They were tender and seasoned very well. An order ($12) comes with four skewers so keep that in mind if you're sharing with a group. The mojitos ($8) come in various flavors and are spot on. They have a decent selection of draft beers in which you can try a flight for ($12). The service is prompt and friendly.
The only reason why this place lost two stars is the abunance of flies in the seating area. I am not sure what it was because the resturaunt seemed clean; the flies just felt like sticking around. For a while people would request to sit at the bar just to avoid dealing with the flies (patrons who arrived later were out of luck). It goes without saying that it is hard to enjoy your meal when your attention is preoccupied by flies landing on your arm and leg.
I hope they figure out a solution.
Street parking was not hard to find on a Wednesday evening.
What a wonderful addition to the neighborhood! A really cute and intimate place with a well-curated selection of food and drinks. $12 for a beer flight from a menu that mostly features local breweries like Big Alice, LIC and Rockaway. The tacos are AMAZING – you get one of each type (pork, chorizo & beef) with heaping portions of meat and guacamole. The other menu items sounded very delicious as well, and I can't wait to go back and try the burger. The owners did a great job of creating a friendly, low key neighborhood place. Great vibes overall and very friendly service from the owner, Jonathan. Kudos!!
I have been here three times already. Each time the experience was memorable! Upon entering jonathan and his wait/bar staff make you feel super welcomed. Both times I have been lucky that I have snagged the last few seats. This is a small place but the efficiency is incredible. For example when it's packed you never once feel like they forgot about you. The kitchen is also very fast at sending out the dishes even during heavy periods. On my first visit I ordered the tamarind Mojito. It was the perfect balance of sweet and sour tartness with just enough alcohol that only an experienced mixologist could obtain. Up next was the 3 taco dish. It's a variety of 3 different tacos- chicken, pernil, and beef. Each one is more tastier than the other and the meat juicer to than the next. It's filling but still leaves you room to try something else. On this occasion I ordered the wings. I am very picky about my wings and always request them extra crispy and drumsticks only. A lot of places would not honor giving you drumsticks only. The waiter took my order exactly to the detail and did not deny me my special request. Wings arrived and were extremely flavorful with just enough kick. I will order them again.
On my second visit I ordered the trio tacos (again). Just because I loved them the first time so much. But like I said you still have some room for something else. So in this visit I ordered the skirt steak lollipops. Cooked to perfection, very tender and flavorful. They came over a bed of mixed greens and chimichurri sauce on top of the lollis. I shared with my best friend. She loved them as well. But commented they were a tad salty for her. I liked the seasoning.
My most recent visit I tried the patacones. They had small chunks of pork on top.
Crispy and plus salty as they should be. I
also tried the passion fruit caipirinha. It was on point. This time a bunch of friends made it for brunch and then I arrived. Jonathan was such a great host everyone stayed thru dinner. This place is just amazing for all type of events and crowds. There is easy street parking at all times in surrounding area. It's a small place but the wait is certainly worth it!! Till my next visit! I cannot wait!!!
