A cheap and delicious hole in the wall. Most items under $10, such a deal. Inside only about 5-7 seats, but there's more seating outside.
Street parking. Being that it's on Austin Street, it's a little hard to find parking spaces during peak times.
Hidden in an alleyway is tokyo teriyaki. There are some seats available outside and a small section inside. The staff seemed pretty friendly and i think the owner may actually be japanese.
Food wise I think this place was just okay. I had some chicken katsu curry with a spicy salmon roll in the bento box combo. The chicken curry looked microwaved , the texture was alright but the curry sauce seemed like those that come with tv dinner boxes. The salmon roll had too much spicy mayo but still pretty good. The bento box came with 2 pieces of pork gyozas which were definitely microwaved as I saw it in front of me.
I don't recommend the bento box combo of you want the katsu, you definitely get more if you just order the katsu alone.
The spam ham musubi was pretty good and only 2 dollars each. I would probably just get a few of those next time and maybe try the ramen too.
Found this place easily after reading some tips. The flag behind the police station was spotted as I crossed the street. The Pork Katsu Curry was exactly what I imagined and was very satisfying for the price I paid.
I was very excited to try the spam musubi since there aren't that many places serving them. And making them myself is time consuming. Maybe I was expecting too much but it was a bit disappointing. The rice wasn't prepared properly and the musubi was falling apart for the most part. I will not be returning for the spam musubi.
I will however, return for its meals. Reasonable prices for great portions and variety. The takeout is speedy as well. On a nice day you can also sit outside. There are a few tables and you're away from the road. Otherwise, the inside area is rather cramped and small.
Small eatery located in an alley way! I love the spam musubi! it's yummy and such a good snack. They have a little seating area outside and a 4 chairs for sushi bar seating. They don't have AC in the summertime so I usually order to go. I would return in the fall to eat in their outdoor seating area. Not sure if they have table service though.
I was craving katsu so I decided to give this place a try. When you enter in it is very small with only like 2 tables. The chicken Katsu was delicious and came with salad and it was a good portion. I also tried the mushubi which was delicious.
My experience at Tokyo Teriyaki was mixed. Like a few other places I've been to before, the food here was worth trying, but I'm not coming back. The Chicken Katsu Sandwich was heavy on the stomach but delicious and well-textured. The Salmon Teriyaki could've been seasoned better, and I wish the rice wasn't doused in sauce. My biggest problem was the store's logo: it's the Land of the Rising Sun flag, which is highly offensive to folks with South Korean roots (and to folks who are Chinese from what I've heard). It makes a heavy political statement that led me to feel awkward and uncomfortable in that restaurant, since, to folks who share my (South Korean) ethnicity, it reflects South Korea's 35 year history as a Japanese colony.
I approached the cashier about it, and when I asked him why this was the logo for Tokyo Teriyaki, he gave me an annoyed, unfriendly look. The first thing he said was, "I'm not Japanese (um, okay dude, no need to get defensive)", and he said that "the old owner of this place is Japanese and chose the logo for the store." I was disappointed that the manager / store owner wasn't available right away for me to talk to but was glad to have brought the issue to the staff worker's attention.
Had I noticed the logo beforehand, I would've chosen to eat somewhere else, but my partner and I were pretty hungry and I initially couldn't put my finger on why the flag logo caught my eye, since I hadn't seen it in ages. Once I did identify the reason behind my discomfort, and did some quick research about it on my phone, my discomfort grew to disgust as I saw how out of line it was. Interesting thing is, during the thirty or so minutes that my partner and I ate our food in the outdoor seating next to the eatery, no other East Asian-looking folks walked in to order food. Overall, a so-so experience that unexpectedly had some heavy social / historical / political undertones.
Tokyo Teriyaki was a relieving find, amidst the pricey eateries that dot Forest Hills. If you only have $10 bucks on you, then most of the items listed on the menu here will fit your budget. My friend and I were craving Onigiri after kickboxing, but we didn't feel like going all the way to Yaya's in Chinatown. That's when Tokyo Teriyaki is supposed to come through, but they don't make that stuff, which is odd for a Japanese-based restaurant. Instead, we opted for two different Katsu sandwiches: chicken and salmon.
My friend and I exchanged half of our sandwiches, and I pretty much liked both. They were wonderful! Both of the chicken and salmon were steaming hot and generously breaded. The chicken in the Chicken Katsu Sandwich was juicy and tender, and the salmon in the Salmon Katsu sandwich, likewise. However, they're still two very different proteins, so texture and taste was different.
You definitely have to try the sandwiches! It's a nice little meal to have after a workout, or to curb hunger pangs. Would come back here again to try some of the other stuff, if I were in the area.
Delivery came far ahead of the estimated time quoted, which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the katsu curry and very much enjoyed it. I specifically asked that they package the katsu in a separate container so it wouldn't arrive soggy, and it was awesome! I thought the serving of chicken looked small at first sight, but it was extremely filling. A little odd that they use super sticky sushi rice with the curry, but not bad. It's great that you can choose the roll you'd like instead of getting stuck with a boring California roll. I ordered that spam musubi as well. There's nothing special about rice, teriyaki sauce and spam and yet it's so addictive and satisfying.
They forgot my Snapple but were apologetic and promised to send it over when I ordered. Since I had already decided to order again in the future, that solution worked just find for me.
