The Halal Guys

“I tried ONE drop on some gyro meat and it set my whole mouth on FIRE, so get the hot sauce on the side and add to taste.”

“Even though I've already visited The Halal Guys Cart in Midtown, I still felt compelled to try this brick & mortar location.”

“The falafel is very good and the whole idea for having an entire lunch/dinner for less than 9 bucks in this area is incredible.”

  1. A quieter sit down outpost in the UWS of the food cart. I was staying just a few blocks away and thought it'd be worth checking out since everyone raves about it. I was ready to be disappointed but pleased to find out food lives up the hype! Cheap, high quality and super tasty.

I got the small combo platter and it was a generous heaping of both beef gyro and chicken smothered in a delicious white sauce. This is the small platter, for only $7 in NY? It's so much food Both meats were so tender, juicy and brimming with smoked flavor. I've been trying to cut back on beef but NY makes it so hard. Luckily the gyro isn't too heavy or greasy and sits well in your tummy. Everything tasted super fresh, even those nuclear looking tomatoes and romaine I usually tolerate and the pita bread which was soft and toasty.

Definitely worth a stop at any of the locations to try out. Bonus points for this one being chill, not crowded, and very clean. They started franchising and SF Bay recently got Halal Guys so here's hoping it lives up the NY quality. I'm cautiously optimistic.

  2. I remember the first time I ever had hala guys in New York. I was drunk off my mind and then someone gave me the Glorious Bowl of Heavenly lamb and chicken rice, and all was set in my heart.

I was in love, and her name was..hala guys?
The food was amazingly cheap, super filling, and delicious! Of course when you're drunk, everything is cheap (including that 30 dollar drink you got at the club and that 10 dollar bottle of figi water you bought that girl you didn't know was a prude! Hmph)

So I just had to refresh my memory, about 2 years later and sober of course! Well, for one with adhd and goldfish memory, let me tell ya, I wasn't disappointed.
How much was the meal? I forget, but it was cheap! Like chipotle cheap, like 10 dollars and under cheap, like I could buy two if I had the stomach of an ox cheap!

And the food was just as delicious as I remember. The chicken and lamb are moist and flavorful, and the halal sauce ties it all together perfectly with the rice and warm pita. My love had returned back to me, after all this time!

I can't wait until they open one here in Vegas so I can go there as my drunk go-to cheap eat spot! And for only 9 bucks a bowl? I'm down.

  3. We had really built this place up in our minds, and it totally delivered!  Simple, direct menu focusing on what they do best.  We've tried the chicken platter, gyro sandwich, and hummus – all are fantastic and well-priced.  While, yes, the red sauce is hot, don't get TOO scared of it (unless you're sensitive to spice) – I asked for just a little, and it added a great kick!  Would definitely go back.

  4. We love Halal Guys. The falafel is the best I've ever had. Don't make the same mistake that I made and order a small, just go with the large and you won't regret it! The food is amazing. This location is great. You can watch the food as it is prepped. Hummus is an extra $1 and it is totally worth every penny. If in the area, you should stop by and give it a try!

  5. The halal guys are like no other! I cannot get halal as good from other vendors as I can from these guys. I am so happy they have stores now because now, I can actually eat indoors with seats and tables, instead of struggling outdoors to find one! Haha. I always get the chicken with rice from them and I can't get enough. One platter is enough to fill me up and be careful of their hot sauce!! It's good but it is spicy!! Even a few drops can get ya. So, if you're new to their hot sauce and want to try it, PROCEED WITH CAUTION, start off with a few drops then add more! Also, get a drink, you're gonna to be parched from the meal.

  6. Finally I got to try Halah Guys!!! Although this is an actual restaurant and not the cart I was still super excited! I went with chicken and falafel. It was delicious. Omg that white sauce is amazing and can't imagine eating it without it. I had to go back up and ask for more! Employees were friendly and place is clean. We were able to find street parking about a block away. There were not crazy lines either like the cart has but I still feel like to have the whole "Halah Guys" experience I need to try the cart. But if in the area again, you can bet I will be back!!

  7. I need to quit coming here every week… but damn it's so hard. It's an actual restaurant with sitting areas, it's almost never crowded and you definitely get more options than at the cart vendor. PLUS you can take your meal over to Central Park and have an impromptu picnic!

I always get myself small gyro platter with extra meat- no rice ("trying" to be low carb about things) and loads of white sauce. I am always surprised at how generous and filling the portion is! They don't really have the sauce bottles out there for abuse but they really do put on the right amount of sauces – unless you're the type of guy to gorge down a whole bottle of sauce, then this isn't the place for you. They do offer packets of hot sauce for an extra fee, but good lord those are so hot. At least there's also a soda fountain to quench the heat.

Sometimes the pay line gets backed up because some patrons either order a large amount or pay in pennies or something. Most times it's a fairly quiet, in and out sort of thing. Either way, beats the long cart line any day.

  8. I have always been a fan of halal guys since moving to NYC. This location is great because there's sitting area and also you can get toppings on the bowls such as chopped onion and bell peppers. My favorite item is the chicken rice. The chicken is always tender and the white sauce on top of the lettuce is amazing. The best part is it is a quick and affordable meal.
