Mariella

“Wife went with the chicken rolatini with kale, capers, cheese and roasted cherry tomatoes – I sneaked as many bites as I could.”

“The whole wheat ricotta vanilla pancakes were light, fluffy, rich, and sweet but not too sweet.”

“I really enjoyed the food, the outdoor seating and the service (we had a kookie waitress who was slightly clutzy but very warm).”

  1. It was busy on a Friday night but we never felt rushed. Our waitress was welcoming and gave us just the right amount of attention! (not smothering and not neglecting)

We all (5 girls) shared a bottle of Rose ($35!!!), the meatballs & burrata appetizers, pesto kale pasta, the fettucine bolognese, the salmon, and short ribs. Everything was delicious & we chose gluten free options. My favorite was the salmon and bolognese- salmon was perfectly seared and coupled with capers and nice semi-pickled veggies. The bolognese was thick and hearty, pasta cooked al dente.

I also can't forget to mention that ricotta cheesecake! What a pleasant surprise it was since I'm not a fan of ricotta cheese.

Mariella was the perfect place for a cozy dinner! Definitely coming back!

  2. I have to disagree with all the lovers of Mariella's pasta. I had the Paccheri al Pesto di Kale (kale pesto pasta), and it was a very small portion of incredibly bland pasta. I basically never add salt to dishes, but I poured it on in the hopes of tasting something. The other members of my party were similarly underwhelmed with their dishes, but our server was incredibly friendly (+1 star).

  3. Great hidden gem! Service is great, small, cozy, and comfortable local restaurant in South Slope. Best bet is to make a reservation if you want to go on the weekend because it is small.

  4. Charming and affordable, and our servers were helpful and cheeky. I liked the salads and appetizers way better than the pastas we ordered. Specifically…
Shrimp & avocado salad (special): amazing.
    Burrata and eggplant: amazing.
    Kale pesto pasta: not bad.
    Risotto: hated it.

Also, points for the bread basket. Will come back again the try the non-pasta entrees.

  5. My husband and I came here for brunch and loved it! The service was fantastic. I felt like we had between 2-3 people helping us at all times! We shared the burrata appetizer and it was great! Really fresh and well made burrata. I got the vanilla ricotta pancakes and he got the eggs benny. He loved his! Ate every last bit of it. His only gripe is that there was a hair on it when it came. The pancakes were wonderful! Soft, a little sweet, and creamy. They came with peaches and blueberries. These were clearly from a can, which is why I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. Took away form the amazingness of the pancakes. They should have just sued fresh fruit. And been less stingy with the amount that was on there. The prices were great. i would definitely come back here!

  6. Man. Who knew this area of Brooklyn would have such a dynamite Italian restaurant?
I've had this restaurant bookmarked for a while because my girlfriend used to live in the area, and she has Celiac's. I've read reviews that said Mariella had a great gluten free selection, and they were not kidding.

Every one of their pasta selections are available in a gluten free option for an additional $1. Every other restaurant I've been to that offered gluten free options generally charge at least an additional $2, so that was nice.

We started off with the kale and beets salad (one of that day's specials), which was jazzed in a light vinaigrette and served with mandarin orange pieces. Kale is kale, it's really hard to reinvent kale. The beets were fantastic though. I love beets, but these beets beat beets offered by other establishments. These are some beet beatin' beets.

I opted for the Rigatoni Mariella, which is rigatoni in a pink sauce with peas, mushrooms and sausage. The pasta was at that exact level of al dente you imagine all Food Network chefs vie for, the pink sauce was creamy, but not too heavy (which I was very thankful for since I didn't bring my Lactaid pills with me), and the sausage. Oh the sausage. Listen, I know my way around Italian sausage (phrasing, I know), but the concentrated level of spice along with the great texture served as a really great counterbalance to the pasta and pink sauce.

My girlfriend had the gluten free variation of their Paccheri al Pesto di Kale, which was pasta in kale pesto with parmiggiano and walnuts, and the look on her face when she took the first forkful kinda made me jealous. She absolutely loved it, and couldn't believe just how great it was.

As I didn't have my Lactaid with me, I was the only idiot who didn't order dessert, but apparently their tiramisu, vanilla panacotta (gluten free!), and (something involving vanilla and chocolate ice cream in a chocolate shell) were absolute bliss. I hate my life.

Also, service was just as great as the meal was. I don't recall her name, but our server (who had a lovely and charming Irish accent) was a jewel, and we'd return just for her. Well no..the food. The food is more important.

  7. I went to mariella on a Monday night for dinner. It quickly filled up. We ordered a bottle of wine. I have to say that they have an excellent selection of red wines by the glass! They had ones that are hard to find by the glass like barbera d'alba and aglianco. I can't wait for return in the winter to get some of those reds!

We ordered two pasta dishes that were both specials. One was gnocchi with short rib ragu. It was delicious. My friend had a black linguine with crab, clams and mussels. It was delicious. We dipped the bread in the sauce and it was great. The bread they give you is delicious. It's soft and tastes like its baked with olive oil.

    The service was very good.
I would love to return and try some of the things on the menu.

  8. It's been a while since I've been here but my wife and I really had a fantastic meal here.  I need to make a trip back, and you should too.  The seasonal variety was refreshing.  Some say the music is a little too loud, but I don't mind.  I enjoy sitting outside anyway.
