The food is very very good (not amazing) but very good.
What I do love though is how they seem to make every dish flavorful and every dish seems so fresh and I guess cared-for in a way. It's relaxed service and they bring the food out as it comes.
The menu is so enormous there's a ton of different things to try. Most of it feels like it's on the healthier liter side too. But you can select pricier fish entree options or just do something simple and more affordable like a souvlaki/gyro kinda thing. I can't emphasis enough how insanely large this menu is for the size of the restaurant and in this case that its vastness isn't detrimental to the execution of the food.
Hard to find Greek food in general and one of the better places in Carroll Gardens.
Had lunch at Avlee Greek Kitchen with the family yesterday…it's more of a 3.5 star place to be honest. Here are my thoughts:
Ambiance is great. The place is clean and the decor is nice.
Service is friendly and fast.
Food is good for the most part-
— Chicken Souvlaki looked good but both the husband and daughter deemed it very dry.
— Accompany okra and fries were excellent.
— Greek salad was fresh and delicious.
— Artichoke / Lentils weren't the best. It was just a giant bowl of mush.
— Lemon potatoes were mushy and terrible. The kitchen was nice enough to take this back.
Overall we enjoyed our lunch but as we've definitely had better Greek food in Manhattan it's unlikely we'll return.
Came here because the wait at The Buttermilk Channel was obnoxious as per usual. Did not have high expectations but was very pleasantly surprised.
It made me feel like I was inside the home of a wonderful Greek family who ensured that I was fed and fed well. Ordered the Greek salad and chicken souvlaki platter with a side of the most delicious Greek fries with feta cheese and truffle oil.
I think this place is underrated and needs to be explored more.
It was such a pleasant experience strolling into here on a Friday night, the place was bright, crisp and refreshing. Though I do recommend making a reservation and not just strolling in, they're pretty busy. Our waitress was friendly and made banter with us.
For the table, we got Fava Fritters to start and when they came, I was somehow expecting something else… but they were alright, maybe a tad too salty for my liking. I ordered from the Psistaria menu and went for the Shrimp platter (as that was the only pescatarian option that was most economical with getting to try 2 of their sides, their sides intrigued me). The two sides I chose to go with my platter were Spanakorizo and Artichoke & Lentils. I do have to say, when my platter came, I honestly was rather disappointmented My Shrimp platter came with 5 pieces of shrimp plus the sides and an included salad, but that was besides the point. I did think five shrimp for this particular platter wasn't worth the $20 price tag, compared to the other (sadly non-pescatarian) platter options. The flavour of the shrimp itself was fine/standard/average. The Spanakorizo side was the most memorable dish of the night, apart from the ambiance of the place. I do really wish I had had a better food experience at this place.
Probably the best Greek food I've ever had. The meats are cooked to perfection. The service was amazing too, some of the best I've seen for NY. The server (Diana) was super helpful and a joy to work with. Will be back for sure!!!!
What a lovely evening! I dined here recently and we enjoyed our experience. The food was good and the service was even better.
I will say that the service and servers were amazing. They were super attentive and checked to make sure that our meal experience was a satisfactory one.
We started with the meatballs which were seasoned well. And went on to the lamb and beef gyros. The meal ended with the rice pudding which while tasty was a little undercooked.
All in all, a wonderful way to end the evening and I will definitely be back!
Really strong service that has the capability to shift your attention away from the small sized dishes.
Oh, Avlee. I'm so glad I found you. It was a late afternoon and my dad and I were tired, dehydrated, and seriously craving gyros. Like, ferociously craving. Hangry.
So we ordered three mezze (fava mani- which is essentially hummus but grittier, melitzanosalata- aka babaganoush, and tzatziki), followed by lamb gyro sandwiches.
My mouth was so happy. Everything was so fresh and delicious. I just don't know what else to say. The gyro totally killed it! I can't wait to come back and try more menu items.
Avlee is definitely not what I'd call a romantic antic date spot, but it's got a refreshing family-run atmosphere. And the service is very doting. Basically, it's everything acute little Brooklyn restaurant should be (think water served in mason jars) minus the pretentiousness.
If you want good Greek food, go.
