  1. Gottscheer Hall has been around for so long.  It's a neighborhood staple.  Unfortunately with the influx of lumberjack/twig legged Hipsters infiltrating Ridgewood and the surrounding area, they make going here and having a good time frustrating!

Getting a table here can be super hard on the weekends.  Especially when there's a Ridgewood Market event.  If you want a table when a night market is happening, definitely get in before 5 PM.  For Sunday brunch, if you're not here by 10:30, you'll NEVER get a bar stool, table, etc.  These obnoxious Hipsters take over everything.  Even after they finished drinking and eating, they still just sit and take up everything. With no respect because they see the huge crowd gathering waiting for any spot to sit. Even noticed one Hipster family put their child up on a table and have her dance.  With her shoes on.  On a dining establishments table.  How rude can these idiots be??

Enough with my hatred for these fools and on to the dining experience itself.  You seat yourself. Not a huge amount of tables, but enough. Service is a bit slow, but friendly.  The lovely accented male bartender came and took our order but never brought us our drinks.  We got them towards the end of our meal.  Prices are very reasonable and the drinks are strong and they have a good variety of different house cocktails.  The menu isn't huge, but what they do have is homey and delicious.  Total comfort food.  I've only ever had the Three Cheese Baked Spaetzle which is heaven in your mouth for eight bucks.  Perfectly cooked dumplings with lots of gooey, oozing cheese.  Mmmmmm!!  The German Potato Salad is extremely authentic and spot on!

When the Hipsters aren't invading the place, the vibe is really chill and relaxed with regulars and locals who've been in the area for decades. REAL Ridgewoodites.  A huge plus is the lovely FREE jukebox that they have with an insane variety of music.  From John Denver to ABBA to Guns 'N Roses.  Also, the security guard is really sweet and friendly.

  2. What a strange divy throw back. It seriously looks like this place is trapped in another decade. But, that is what makes it way cool. And where the hell else in the city can you get $5 Franziskaner? Nowhere. The locals are strange, but endearingly so (they actually try to talk with you) I came here on an evening when a friend was playing a set of music. The ballroom in the rear looks like he it hasn't been worked on since the 70's and the lighting is atrocious. So, these combined with the strange but friendly locals makes this place a worthy haunt. If I'm in Ridgewood I'll be coming back.

  3. I have been to the Hall two times, on both occasions, it was for an event that was held by a friend. It clearly has deep roots, as the hallway and portions of the large dining room/banquet hall, adorn pictures, paintings, maps and more. The German beers, whether on tap or by the bottle would please any German beer fan. When it was time to eat, given it was buffet style, the sausage was very high quality-I was a bit tipsey, so I dont recall every dish, so after a full plate of sausage, I quickly bee lined for my seat. It is on the top of my TO DO list to return to Gottscheer Hall, for a less drinking infused, relaxed sit down complete dinner. I cant wait!!!

  4. This place….. It's not where I want to go all the time, but it's a delightful break from the monotony of all the new found hipster bars in the area that all look like they were designed by the same person, and have exactly the same customers. Gottscheer has history. You will not be entirely surrounded by hipsters. There will be polish people old and young. You might see an older guy in a suit, a younger guy who looks like he works construction and is so drunk he's about ready to pass out on the bar. A spunky senior citizen lady might strike up conversation with you. The bartenders have worked there forever, and to them it's just a business deal. No waiting for them to finish up a twenty minute conversation to notice you have an empty beer.Decent bathroom!!! I really want to try the food. It doesn't look all that fancy, nor is it priced as such, but it smells amazing, and the woman bringing it out looked who I would want cooking my German food. It truly looked like food you might get at your German aunt's house. A nice big sausage and some kraut, but with a side of wonder bread. Unpretentious. I'm a f
an. You could also walk in wearing your pajamas and nobody would give a shit.

  5. I'm torn.

I love this place.  I had never been here before, but my dearest friend recently moved around the block, and as she's aware of my fondness on all things German (beer, men, food), she suggested we go here the weekend my (now estranged) wife and I visited her in her new hood.

This place is great.  It smells like sauerkraut, the bar is small and simple, they have a short tap list but the beers are varied enough to cover your taste (miller lite::vom::, spatan, hoeegarden), a decent bar selection and a lot of bottled beer.

The menu is German (YUM), and even though I had just destroyed two slices at Rosa's I was tempted to go Lt Aldo Raine on some brats.  The bartender was friggin adorable AND – here's the kicker kids – the 1.5 pints are 5 beans.  Peanut sized beers are like 3 bucks.  Boom.  I can get lit up here nice and cheap.  And there are tables where I can attempt to teach my "special" friends how to play cards.

**note: if the friggin card in the middle falls between the two outer cards YOU WIN Blondie.  For the Love of God I'm not even the Brains of the group and I know how to play acey-deucy**

Anyway, I'm hesitant to give this 5 stars simply because as we were enjoying some delightful banter and beer-swilling card play, we were legit over run by hipsters.

I'm not even joking, it was pleasant, and nice, and we were having a great time, when BAM!  Three came in.  Before we knew it, they were everywhere.  Like f-ckin cockroaches.  One tried to take my seat and I had to shoo him away (hit the bricks Jesus, or I will brain you).  Another tried to eat her brat at our table and I had to block her (sit down here and lose your food, hipster)

Hopefully it'll start being cool to drink at the places I like so they'll go back to Williamsburg where they belong.  Or maybe they can head over to Bushwick and see how the boyz in the hood feel about hipsters.  They'll eradicate them faster then…(insert classless German joke here).

  6. I love Gottscheer Hall. It is such a local gem in Ridgewood. The prices are great, would highly recommend a pretzel and any of the German beers on tap. My favorite part about this place is the mix of locals and new to Ridgewood crowd and the authentic unpretentious attitudes. The Miss Gottscheer Hall photos dated back until the 1960s are amazing too. They have the Ridgewood Market here on the weekends which is fun to check out as well.
