This is everything I was hoping for and didn't get the first time I tried Portuguese BBQ in Newark (different spot). I was just wandering around Newark for a couple of hours before going to the airport when the scent of caramelizing meat and skin drew me down the street. The meat was juicy and very tender with a perfectly seasoned blend of salt and spices. The portion was gigantic for the half-chicken – not a bad-sized bird, and a heaping ton of rice. (I asked for double rice instead of the standard rice+fries, and I think everyone should do that every time. The fries looked average, and they were the skinny kind I'm not a fan of.) The yellow rice was very flavorful in its own right, which helped me conquer that tall mountain. There are even ethnic sodas and beers on offer – I ran through two guarana drinks before deciding I didn't need to spend more on soda than the entire meal. If I were really hungry, I could have ordered a whole chicken, but I don't think one person can be that hungry. I do need to come back and try the ribs, now that I read the other reviews.
Really, really delicious ribs. Well seasoned and nicely cooked every time. Tender enough that you can cut them easily with a knife and a half order is pretty huge. Highly recommend both the beef and pork ribs. I've only had the ribs the two or three times I've been here because they are good enough that I'm reluctant to try other things.
It's hard to not compare this place to the other various similar options in the area. The only other one I have been to McWhorter barbecue. Both are very delicious but there are differences. I prefer the dining area at Elm St BBQ. That being said, you do get less meet in a half order. It's still plenty though so nothing to complain about. This place also has a much bigger menu including various types of appetizers, shrimp, and fish.
I definitely recommend checking this place out, and if you do, trying the ribs.
Yes Parking Sucks in Ironbound… Who cares??? This spot is Banging! GET the Chicken platter! Best $11 greenbacks spent.
Last night the lady and I were fiening proteins. We've been on a smoothie detox and were cracked out looking for grilled protein.
Lo and behold we stumbled upon elm street. We ordered the grilled salmon platter and a whole chicken platter. Rice and beans for one combo and rice and veggies for the next. The total with tip for takeout was $33.
Let me begin with grilled salmon platter. Comes with two salmon steaks. Seasoned well with sea salt and grilled AWESOME! The fish and bbq smokey taste were heaven to us. Now on to the grilled chicken platter… I must admit, this is hands down one of the BEST chicken platters I've had. We been to Boa Vista and Brazilian spice, but this place the chicken is out of this world amazing! It seasoned well. The chicken was moist, grilled and had well balance of salt, pepper and spice. Omg good for real!
We will def go back! Maybe dine in, but gotta figure out the best time to go. Not a fancy white table cloth setting, but the food is amazing. Can't wait to try the ribs and I hope you enjoy if you go.
Elm Street I heart you too. Its called BBQ II not sure where BBQ I is located if it exist at all.
Whole Chickens, Salmon, Ribs, Shrimp and garlic all complimented with Rice add some fries, if one so chooses. Te churrasco meats are done well here. This is more of a takeout place. They do have a dining area, very small. They charge extra to dine in
Now Elm Street's Freddy Kruger chicken will make you have sweet dreams never, ever nightmare's street sits around the corner from McWhotters. There is definite Churrasco war in the iron bound having so Many spots you cannot go wrong with here.
I am not sure of what seasoning they use. However it consists of an extreme amount of flavor in every bite. The smell will lure you in.
Having grown up in the Ironbound section of Newark I have tried lots of different kinds of Portuguese BBQ and this is one that I still crave. I now live miles away from this establishment but I will (and do) make the drive out for their chicken and ribs. The prices are great for their portions. I have had take out and dine-in several times and don't have any complaints as far as cleanliness, food, taste or service. Family members have also tried their salmon here and recall their pleasure with their meal.
I'd have to say the only downer is parking. There are a few spaces in the back, a private garage to the right of the establishment, a few feet before its entrance. However, it is small, limited and tight! But of course if you're familiar with the Ironbound, you would have already known about their serious parking problems.
This place is great they give you so much food, The restaurant is not too big or small. The rice and fries are delicious. I got the combo half chicken and half Ribs. I had to take most of it Togo because I was so stuffed. The only thing I did not like is that they give you bread when you first sit down and it was just cold/ room temperature. Other then that it was good
Exceptional place. The atmosphere is casual. The foot is well priced, $14 for a rack of ribs, with rice and salad, and the pork ribs are great and have a sweet marinade. the beef ribs are fine, but not as good. If you're looking for ribs in Newark, try this place.
