  1. After eating at Brooklyn Taco, we swung back here because my girlfriend had heard good things about the spinach pie. Well, it has great flavor – I've never really thought of spinach as much more than a side dish to a main meal, but it's very well-sauteed in the pie, and the dough is very light – in contrast to a lot of Greek food I've had in the past. The cheese is delicious as well, but there's just a light sprinkling in keeping with the general lightness of the dish. So freakin' good! We also checked out the chocolate chip cookies, which were much different than I've had elsewhere but were tasty nonetheless…very cake-y in texture and a twist of orange flavor, but incredibly delicious and very unlike the other chocolate chips I've run across. The pear pie was also extremely good. Very light like the rest of the food, with a layer of pear embedded inside the cake, which was powdered lightly with sugar.

Essex St. Market was the real find this past weekend, and this was the highlight of the places I saw there. Everything was amazing, and I'm impressed that Rona is able to run the whole place and still make amazing food across the board. I'll definitely be back when I'm in LES.

  2. The best spinach pie I've had. The lady told me she would reheat it, which is highly appreciated and I came back after a few minutes of walking around Essex Market. It's a thin triangle piece. The spinach filling tasted fresh and had the slight bitterness of spinach.

In the end, it was $4 for an extremely thin and small bite of food. It doesn't even contain a protein, so for the value, I have hard time justifying having it again.

  3. Great place to go to! I was waiting to eat at Shopsin's and decided to go right around the corner to Boubouki's. I had to get the Spinakopita because I ate it so frequently at my neighborh's home as a child. The spinakopita brought me back to my childhood….awesome flavor and nice and flaky crust!

The owner and her mother were VERY kind as well!

Will return when I go back to NY sometime

  4. Spanikopita. Crumbly, crispy, buttery, flaky and delicious. The spinach is perfectly cooked and entwined with salty feta for an out-of this world bite.

Dear Boubouki, I don't think you understand how dangerous it is that you're only a block from me. I have no choice but to visit everyday for a slice of heaven.

PS: PEAR CAKE. That is all.

  5. Homemade baklava is the way to go baby!!! I love the fact that they're just one stand in this food hall because you can then proceed to try various things. Only come here to look for a small snack; it's not a place that you'll find something to fulfill you.

  6. Delicious baked goods.

A small stand inside Essex Street Market. The sweetest owner and her mother run the shop. Plenty of fresh and aromatic baked goods on display. Reasonably priced and obviously home made.

Tried the Carrot Cake, Chocolate Chip Cookie, Spinach Pie and Baklava. Still thinking about them at this very moment. Quality ingredients used. Total came to about $13.

The Carrot Cake was moist, not too sweet and had loads of goodies inside. Incredibly flavorful. The Chocolate Chip Cookie was soft, buttery and filled with dark chocolate chips. Just the way I like it. The Spinach Pie and Baklava is where it's at. I regret buying just one of each. I should have bought the entire pan! It was that good. Crisp phyllo pastry on top with warm spinach and melted feta cheese inside. Lightly buttery and slightly salty all at the same time. This savory pastry was a delicate treat. The Baklava was sweet and had loads of nuts inside. The flavor of cinnamon really stood out. Delicious.

The owner and her mother are so helpful and really try to get to know their customers. My day was off to a crummy start and their genuine smile and kindness really helped make my day that much brighter.

  7. Like many of the gems opened in the Essex Street Market, this diminutive booth is well worth a stop.  Boubouki offers a bit of Greek home-cooking, courtesy of Rona Economou's grandmother's recipes.

The small menu varies, a mix of savory and sweet baked goods, and salads.  The must-have item is the spanakopita, or spinach pie.  The acclaim for it is deserved.  That triangular slice of pie is blissful, thin layers of flaky, crisp phyllo topping a melded filling of fresh spinach and cheese, savory and perfect.  I've had the privilege of eating Greek homemade spanakopita; this is every bit as good, albeit a different style.  A flatbread topped with feta, tomato, olive oil, and herbs was also well-made, but less impressive.  Quite tempted to try a pear cake; another reason to return.

Prices are a bit expensive, but I consider this slice of Greek home-cooking a business worth patronizing, and the prices worth paying.

  8. My cheap food hunt continues, and this is one that tops the list.
Finally was here early enough in the day (by 2pm on Saturday) to get the spanikopita.  The filling was absolutely delicious!  Crust was flaky but too oily.  Still very good.  Too small though! ($4).
The baklava was the best any of us have ever had.  Many layers of perfect deliciousness. Not overbearingly sweet like so many.  Passed the test of my overly critical food critic mom even!
Returning to try that perfect looking carrot cake.
