Selamat Pagi

“Light, flavorful, topped with toasted coconut and macadamias, spiced whipped cream and palm syrup on the side.”

“Definitely save room for dessert because their chocolate tart is to die for and they serve Van Leeuwen affogato!”

“My go to dishes are the smoked squid salad, meatballs, beef rendang, long bean salad, pickled veg, and the fried chicken.”

  1. I went here last night and had the mie goreng tempeh, which was totally delicious. The peanut sauce was flavorful but not too heavy, and the vegetables were fresh and perfectly cooked. It is very rare that a not-totally-vegan restaurant offers tempeh, so I loved that it was a staple among their dishes. I only wish for texture that it were a bit crisper. This is a great place for people of all diets, regardless of restrictions or lack thereof. I came with my non-vegan girlfriend and she loved her dish as well. The ambiance is nice and has a sort of California vibe to it.

  2. This is one of those spots that has a tendency to be overlooked, and I'm certainly guilty of that.  I've been in the area for a long time and passed Selamat numerous times and never thought to check it out. Well, my husband and I finally did and boy were we missing out!!

It's a lot bigger than I initially thought, considering the outdoor space is super tiny.  The decor is very cute and the staff is so nice and helpful.

We were seated right away on a weekday night.  We ordered drinks, I went for the unbelievably delicious Killer B Soju Cocktail.  It was a mix of sweet, tangy, spicy and just straight up amazing.  It's not so spicy, it just mildly tingled but in the best way.  Try it!!  My hubs went for beer, his usual.

We shared the chicken satay skewers, which were so yummy. It wasn't a huge portion, just three small skewers with perfect bites of juicy chicken in a delicious peanut spicy sauce.  It was beautifully plated and easy to share.  I could have eaten the whole thing myself, it was that good.

For the main course, we opted to share the spicy beef rendang, hoping it would be large enough.  It was nearly large enough, the issue was it was too delicious and we ended up fighting over every bite.  This dish is truly remarkable with tons of flavor that will make you want to lick the bowl clean.  I'd be hard pressed to try another dish the next time we come here, it was that good.

Since we were still a tiny bit hungry, we enjoyed the coconut creme brûlée, which was really good.  I can't eat dairy, but cheated a bit.

Overall, an excellent meal.  We'll definitely be back and promise not to overlook amazing neighborhood gems in the future.  Although I'm thinking about keeping this one a secret… all for me.

  3. Really excellent (and spicy!) food. Everything tastes clean and fresh. The cocktails are interesting and the beer list is great. I will be back!

  4. I really like the food and cocktails a this little cozy place, but the menu is limited and hasn't changed. As a vegetarian I ate the same amazing dish, but I'd love to try something else from the chef. Same thing with the cocktails. There are about 4 specialty drinks, and those are the same 4 that were available last year. We've had a good experience getting in and eating even on weekends. I definitely recommend it!

  5. Great place!! Great selection of food – very fresh. Fresh colors, nice ambience, tucked away on a quiet street, great date place. Lovely service. Highly recommend and can't wait to go back!!

  6. Spicy and full of flavor, there wasn't a bad dish ordered at our table. We got there just in time to have their meatball special app (last order) and were pleasantly surprised by the spice. I would definitely re-order the fish curry (my favorite of the night) and the mushroom buns, but the fried chicken wasn't as flavorful as the other dishes. The ginger beer is on point- any drink that adds it should rock!

  7. This place is so adorable. Its like walking into a little oasis in Brooklyn.

I got the nasi goreng and the Killer B as a cocktail. It tasted really fresh, light, and delicious. I haven't had Indonesian food before, and it was really good – it tastes kind of like Indian food, but nuttier and sort of grainy-er.

I felt like I was transported to a little tropical unknown spot (with conveniently hip waitstaff) and I was served local dishes at my leisure. If it was warmer outside, I would have expected to be misted.

    Lovely.

  8. Been for both brunch and dinner, and it's one of my favorite spots for both. The pumpkin coconut curry is great, but my favorite is definitely the beef rendang. They also offer a brunch version, which is similar but includes an over-easy egg on top, and is equally awesome. Picky eaters will be happy to know that the banana pancakes are also great.
