  1. BEST THING I'VE HAD IN THE PAST 2 MONTHS

Thank you EatArcade for illuminating this gem; I think I'm in LOVE with Venezuelan food X__X

    FRIDA KHALO CACHAPA $9
Ground Beef, Black Beans, Avocado and Shredded White Cheese
-Damn this was delicious. The cachapa was very supple, but held it's own; it's very sticky and every bite you take starts off with a sticky sweetness but the inside of the yellow cachapa is magically indulgent, creamy with little corn bits. The trio of black beans, ground beef and perfectly melted shredded cheese all combined into this crazy food harmony, it was perfect. Not much texture, very one-note (mushy) but TONS OF FLAVOR, and a lot of depth. Every bite was satisfying, never boring, I wished this didn't have to end..

They have a wide range of arepas and cachapas: vegetable, pork, ceviche style, pabellon, chorizo, chicken etc, yumm CAN'T WAIT

    Recommended: Frida Khalo Cachapa

  2. One of the best arepas I've had in this city.

I went with shredded beef, fried plantains, avocado, and white cheese with picante ($9), which thanks to my good choices, turned on incredible.

The shredded beef is tender and spiced, without being stringy. The salty cheese contrasts the sweet plantains, and the buttery avocado calms the picante sauce.

The start however was the arepa. Served piping hot and fresh, it actually has a substantial body with soft maize along with the crispy outside.

  3. Can I talk to you about how much I love arepas?  Venezuela's response to the pita, arepas are pretty much perfect.  They're made of corn and thus safe for folks avoiding gluten, and they have all kinds of tasty filling options.  Vegetarian options abounded though there's plenty of meat for your carnivore friends and there are some creative choices like Italian-themed sandwiches with goat cheese or sundried tomatoes.  I had a hard time choosing but eventually went with beans, plantains, avocado, and tomato.  My friend got one of the other vegetarian options.  I tried her lime drink with cucumber and mint.  Everything was amazing.  Seating is limited as is typical for NYC and this is mostly a grab and go place, but we were there around when they opened and had no trouble snagging a spot.

  4. The arepas here were very good.  My wife wanted to find Venezuelan food and we went across town to try it.  Had to take a train and a bus, but it was worth it.  The people were very friendly and the food was great.  We also had the empanadas and tequeños all really great.

  5. The arepas here are AMAZING. I love arepas so hearing that there was a place dedicated to them was great news!

The menu has a ton of combinations that honestly all sounded great, but I made my own and got it with carnitas, avocado, plantains and their soft cheese. The combination was fantastic! So flavorful and the service was quick (although it was completely empty when we went).

There is not a lot of room (and it's kind of dark and gloomy in there) so I would recommend getting it to go and sitting somewhere outside or something! However the way they pack it to go isn't great…you basically have to hold it upright so it's not super easy to carry out.

The arepas themselves are really big and stuffed to the brim, so I wouldn't get more than one unless you're really hungry.

The one thing I didn't like was that the woman working was really not friendly. I asked her what was in the drink mixer behind her labeled just "passion fruit" and she rolled her eyes and just said "passion fruit." It would not have killed her to say it's fresh juice or just passion fruit juice and water or anything…I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a combo of things and also was curious whether or not it was fresh. Didn't realize that would be such a problem! However I did end up getting it and it tasted great and went well with the arepa! They have a few other juice options as well as latin american sodas (and american ones too). Would definitely come back!

  6. Quaint little shop with a huge variety of arepas! Came here on a Sunday night close to closing time, and we wish we came earlier; they ran out some of the ones we wanted to try! We ordered one espanola and another one we did a "make your own" arepa. Both were extremely delicious, lots of flavor and even though the arepas looked small, they filled us up. There's a cute park across the street so you can definitely get your arepas to go, or enjoy your arepas in their restaurant; just be aware that they have very limited seating!

  7. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon, just for a quick snack. I had a beef empanada which was a perfect little snack at $1.50. Service was also nice and fast

The beef filling was just the right amount and nicely spiced. It was moist but not juicy. The dough was fried well on the outside but felt largely bland and chewy. I think the cheese empanada might be good too

I'll definitely be back to try out some of their arepas

  8. This place is growing on me. This is creeping up to more of a 4.5 stars. Today I got the Del Campo with alemana and it was delicioso. I'm still not sure how to eat this without it completely falling apart and being a mess, but I'm still liking it.
