This is my go to spot in the UES. great vibes, drinks and food. The bar area gets packed, so try to come early during happy hour. If not, you can always get a table in the back. Order they're sliders, they were delicious! Awesome beer selection and cocktail menu as well.
This place is huge and the decor is really nice! We came here for an early-ish dinner on Saturday. I got the fried chicken sandwich and boyfriend got the mushroom torta. They don't come with any sides (you'd have to order it separately) but the sandwich is so filling you really don't need it. The fried chicken sandwich was delicious; perfect amount of spice from the chili oil and even though I'm not a fan of pickles, I didn't mind these. They weren't overpowering. Boyfriend enjoyed the mushroom torta, even though it was a bit cumbersome to eat. For my drink, I got the Mules & Bucks with vodka (basically a Moscow Mule) which was tasty but not strong. If I'm paying $11 for a drink, I want it to be strong enough, not just taste like juice. Maybe the other ones are stronger, I'm not sure. If I came back here, I'd come for the brunch and would maybe try one of the other drinks on the menu (the bourbon milk punch sounds good). Staff is very friendly and attentive and we had no problem getting a table on Saturday night (like I said, the space is huge).
There are so many bars on the UES, many that come and go. This one I think will stay, great atmosphere, good, cold beers and very good food. Service is also very good. My wife and I came in late one night, were happily seated and served quickly, which is really nice as most late night places aren't happy for you to come in and order food.
All in all, a great experience, and we will be back!
Penrose- stopped by for brunch. I had an old fashioned and well done toasts with poached eggs. One of the most wonderful brunches. Hubbie got a glass of beer with avocado toast. Goodness!! Ambience is intimate, food delicious and staff courteous. One of the better bars in the upper east side. Coming back!
Having moved to the upper east side I have definitely noted how there is a lack of quality bars. However, the penrose is an establishment where you can be guaranteed a great drink experience. The bar tenders are super knowledgable about their beers, they are all what I would consider mixologists that can mix any drink of your liking up on demand and do so in a friendly and interactive manner. I haven't had the food bit heard it is delicious as well.
Great place with excellent food and amazing drinks. There are two sections with the very back being equally lit by a sky light. I loved the two bar concept and the long communal table and a section with booths.
I was here pretty much for drinks but I did try the French Toast sticks and I will say this, it's the best I have tried! it's a must do.
I would like to check it out when it's dark though, I'm sure it will be completely transformed with low lighting and candles everywhere.
Perfect date spot. Nice cocktail and beer options. If things are going well and you want to convert your date to more than just drinks, the food is also solid.
It gets a little crowded around 9-10, so it can be tough to find seating if you arrive around then. I wouldn't let that prevent you from going. Something always opens up quickly enough.
Came in here again last night for a couple of drinks. The bar has a great vibe at night! Warm and cozy and a great crowd. I'd have preferred the music to be a bit louder personally, but I guess they want to encourage more intimate conversations.
We got the 'Pure Savage' mai tai which was quite good, though a bit heavy on the lime and not much green tea flavor, and the pinot noir which was good as well. The Montauk IPA was a good choice too. The midnight express shot was a bit disappointing though, a bit too sweet for our liking.
All in all a good local cocktail joint with decently priced and well made drinks.
