  1. I was early for a class at B&H and I needed lunch. I watched as the throng of people streamed in and out of Golden City and noticed their A rating from the board of health too. I went in and had my personal favorite indulgence – General Tso's Chicken with fried rice with an egg roll on the side. I ate it in the restaurant amid the hustle and bustle of a very strong take-out crowd. My main dish was pretty good. General's Chicken is kind of Asian gringo food and uncreative (a least on my part) but when I go to a new place, I never get too adventurous. The portion was good sized and the rice was quite tasty. The egg roll, however, had a strange-for-an-egg-roll spice taste and I have to say, I would not order it there again. Price with a can of soda was around $7 – amazing for NYC.

The verdict – clean place, good portion size, good taste, great price, good value, fast service, weird tasting (but definitely NOT spoiled…) egg roll. I would go back.

  2. Just another generic Chinese takeout place. The quality is okay and the prices are pretty good – actually slightly lower than other Manhattan Chinese takeouts. The General Tso's chicken here is done very well – not too greasy and with the right amount of crispiness. If you are going to the Loews 34th Street movie theater down the block and want to sneak some Chinese takeout in, this is the place to go!

  3. Got a vegetable Lo Mein on my way to the bus stop.  The entree was hot and nice size.   Nice vegetables, mushrooms, celery, cabbage, etc.

They are very prompt and efficient.

  4. I usually give ordinary awesome and cheap NYC Chinese restaurants like this three stars because they're generally a-ok but nothing monumentally special. But this place gets four because the woman there allowed me to have a can of soda even though I was short five cents. I thought I only had enough cash to get a small wonton soup, which I had. There's also a do-it-yourself tea machine where I could just get a cup of water. I'm happy because I've now found two Chinese places near Penn when I have the cravin, this place and Ming's.

  5. Very good Chinese take-out joint in the West 34th Street area where food is hard to come by. My companion and I were trapped in the area for at least four hours so I escaped for some sustenance after discovering a menu to this place in a dark and sweaty chamber of one of the nearby buildings (long story). I decided I would get food here and bring it back.

The establishment is next to the T-Mobile store and is NOT the one closer to 33rd Street. It has a smaller awning. I was instantly enthralled by the peacock mural, but also impressed by the quick moving crowd of hungry lunch patrons calling out orders and cries of "stay! to go!" like an auction house audience.

The kind lady at the counter took my order of curry chicken and Singapore style mei fun noodles with no miscommunications or attitudes whatsoever. The food was finished in a mere five minutes and filled the takeout containers to their brims. It was actually really heavy on the short walk back to the basement we were trapped in for errands.

The food was delicious! It was hot and fresh, and unlike some mei fun noodles, I could taste the pork, chicken, and shrimp separately. It also didn't hit me like a brick later on.

Would I travel here? Not at all but if I find myself down here again I will definitely visit.

Brotip: Their lunch specials last a little longer than usual, till 4 PM!

  6. I have been to Golden City many times (10+).  The food and service is good.  The delivery is fast and the prices are very reasonable.

  7. I ordered the D14 Sha Cha Shrimp over fried rice with hot & sour soup & today ordered D8 Pepper steak over fried rice with hot & sour soup today. Both times, delicious. The crowd is a varied mix of locals (more often, found calling in their orders), area construction workers (the huge Hudson Yards facility is nearby), normal lay folks (lots of tourists on W 34th St) & normal office workers. I went at 1:30p both days & while busy, wasn't overwhelmed either in traffic or speed. I waited under 5 minutes for both orders which had no advance notice. The staff is very understanding & nice from the interactions I saw. The 1st items ordered were great, it's just the sha cha shrimp which are super big & plump cooked neither too much nor too little, with the pleasing treatment of ham bits for the fried rice. The hot & sour soup is the take-out standard, but very fully flavored here as to make me wonder how they get the spicy part in. Overall, very solid Chinese take-out.

  8. So happy that after the owners decided to change, the food for the most part remained the same. The staff is still nice and the only difference I noticed other than the name change was the lobster tank is now empty. Although I must admit I only ordered lobster there twice, I did enjoy knowing it was at least fresh from the tank and not frozen. If you order any of their lobster dishes now, I'm assuming that the meat will be the frozen kind. I always order #13 from the specials menu, broiled shrimps and PFR.
